Angst is my favorite genre! heart
Lets write it together! biggrin (And by "together" I mean "separately" because we belong to different fandoms and see angst in different things.)

Ah, same here! Usually the angst stuff is just free-writing and nothing serious, but then I end up using it in my fic and everyone hates me for it. Apparently not a lot of people like angst. It's kinda weird to me that some people despise it to the point that if any bit of reality (i.e., real-life problems like bouts of depression, suicidal thoughts, etc.) bleeds into a fic, it immediately turns those readers off. And then I mentally get into my pouty "Well, this is my story and I don't want flat characters who lose family members and friends, are assaulted, or go through any traumatic experience and somehow aren't the least bit bothered by it just because real emotions make a select few readers uncomfortable." sweatdrop

Those are real, terrible, things that a person has every reason and right to feel bad about. Any reader who condemns an author for writing angst over those subjects is an a** and should be ignored. That being said, I think the problem of people not understanding or empathizing with true angst stems from all the characters out there (in both fan fiction and canon) that angst over bullshit like who they want to date, how expensive the shoes they want are, how boring school is, etc. These are real world annoyances that everyone can empathize with, but they don't really deserve any legit angsting about. The fact that a lot of writers do spend a lot of time and pages angsting about them sort of turns people off of angst in general. To the point where if they start to read something angsty -even if its legitimate angst- they react with "god, I'm so sick of characters complaining all the time!" Also, a lot of people equate "angst" to "complaining" when that's not what it is at all.

I've noticed that a lot- the whole "angst is just whining about trivial things" belief that seems to be floating around. In my case, a reader got upset because I had a character mourning the loss of a friend who was murdered. According to that reader, despite how I had developed that character, the reaction wasn't appropriate because it wasn't how the reader would have reacted. Then again, I've had a lot of that happen to me: where a reader disagrees with how a character reacts to a situation because that's not how the reader would have reacted. Oh! That's another annoyance of mine: When readers discredit you as an author because you don't write your characters to behave exactly like the reader. I'm gonna shuffle on over to that particular thread and post that. razz

I tend to bawl my eyes out though, especially with The Dark Crimson Blood her fics always ends up with me crying myself into a massive headace. u.u

I tend to bawl my eyes out though, especially with The Dark Crimson Blood her fics always ends up with me crying myself into a massive headace. u.u I completely understand that love-hate. But for me it's only a loving relationship with legitimate angst and turns to love-hate if the angst feels really forced on some scenario that, quite frankly, doesn't warrant angst. However, what's a "legitimate" reason for angst is subjective. For some people, breaking up with a boyfriend/girlfriend warrants massive angst but for me, personally, it hurts for a very short amount of time and I don't agonize over it. So for me, I can't stand the break-up angst unless it was seriously long-term. smile

I haven't seen character death done too well yet, but that's just in the fics that I've read. Like they have it "off-screen" which annoys the hell out of me if it was an important character. Why give an important character a less than glorious death? Either way, I hate when a favorite character dies but I can appreciate a good death scene... Which sounds a little weird. I dunno, I like having my emotions punched in the gut from time to time. rofl

I think everyone appreciates a good death scene but I tend to cry so hard especially in anime though.
