I only have experience with Dells and Compaqs. I really like the Compaq I own. HP computers look pretty good. I would heart to try an alienware computer, even if just for one day. Allegedly Alienwares are great for computer games.

I have a Compaq and it has been reliable, but they are a pain to work on. My Dell laptop I got for the warranty. In my opinion from what I have heard Alienware are good computers, but over priced for what I can build myself. My gateway has given me no problems but it is nothing special. The others I do not know much about.

Oh I forgot My family also has an HP and it has been running for about 9 years without too many issues so HP seams to be a decent machine as well, but also nothing special.

I Own 3 Dells, 1 Systemax, 1 toshiba, and 1 Custom built..
Toshiba Sucks because of the Hardware support.
Dell are the most crappiest with there Hardware support, It took me 6 months to have Dell send me another computer after they sent me 5 hard drives that kept failing because of the Mobo was no Good..
I recommend if you know a lot of computers and how everything works Build your own They work a lot better and It's all the parts you want.

I personally love HP...I have a compaq and a Gateway and they are okay. HP is by far the best in my opion. Dell are okay but the thing with them is that if you want to upgrade stuff 75% of the time you have to buy dell stuff to go with it. Only compatibility issues.

Getting a retail computer is always the better option if you don't know how to build your own. Honestly- some people just don't know how to take a case and parts and put them together in a way that won't catch fire. If you're going to buy retail, I think that HPs would probably be your best bet. HP recently started making VERY good computers for extremely cheap (given their power). For slightly over $1000, I could get a computer with a Radeon X200, 2gigs of RAM, a 300gig hdd, and also- RCA input (for plugging a ps2 or gamecube into your computer). And when I say slightly over $1000, I mean it's less than $1050, so it's a great deal at the cost.
As great as HP is, though, there's still no beating a good custom-built machine. Just so long as you take care of it, that is. Sometimes lack of system warranties can kill you. I honestly wish I had a purely custom machine, but my father thinks he's the technology expert of the house and also I lack money sweatdrop He bought me a Dell ( stressed - shoots self in the head -) and I modded it. First upgrades were more RAM, a videocard, and a complete software over-haul. 6 months later I got a bigger harddrive. A while I got a new motherboard and processor. It took a year and a half, but I slowly (working off a lawn-mowing salary) turned my computer into something worthy of taking to a LAN party 3nodding I also got a job recently, so I'm starting to get more money. By the end of this school year I'm going to get an awesome gaming laptop with 2gigs of RAM. Also throughout the year I'm going to try to set up a 1TB network storage drive.

which do you like the most Dell - Sound company, good home and business computers. HP - Good printers, crappy software, and drivers. Better to stay away from. Compaq - HP with just another name. Do they still use this brand name anyways? Alienware - Game machines with cool cases. Haven't tried them personally but if you can't build your own it's the next best option. Gateway - Proprietary hardware and doesn't like you to upgrade unless it's their hardware. Sony - May they rot and burn. Uses convert antipiracy tactics not allowing you to use burned cds, could mess with your MP3's. I won't use them period. I might consider getting the PS, or PSP from them but I refuse to use most any other of their products. (custom built) mine rocks its custom built - The best way to go if you are a computer nut.

I've worked with Dell and Apple computers, and despite their faults, I prefer the former. I'd love to try Alienware... mainly because I'm a gamer. My laptop is a Toshiba, which is fairly reliable - I've had no problems with it, really.
As for custome computers... geeze. I wish I could do that... But I don't know nearly enough, nor do I have the money or parts.
...That, and my dad would probably (incorrectly) think I would blow myself up. Admittedly, there might be some sparks and melting plastic, but hey... xd

I prefer custom built but I don't happen to be using one because I can't afford it. I'm using a heavily upgraded HP Pavilion 750n.
