Mewt was a very interesting little boy, Miss Sarah thought as she watched the children of the pre-school play. While the others ran about, playing tag or hide-and-go-seek, little Mewt simply sat at his table with his crayons, coloring whenever he got the chance.
But it wasn't his lack of social skills that made his teacher curious. In fact, she wasn't quite sure what it was exactly. Maybe it was the odd feeling she got, that Mewt wasn't utterly absorbed in his crayons, but secretly watching everyone around him. Or maybe it was the subjects of his drawings; daily snapshots, while still messy and uncoordinated in the hand of a five-year-old, still holding skill that did not befit his tiny hands. Perhaps it was the way he stared at story time, drinking in every word, seemingly without blinking, while the rest of the children fidgeted and grumbled.
As she always did, Miss Sarah stepped forward and gently placed a hand on his shoulder and spoke softly, "What are you drawing today, Mewt?"
The little boy with soot-colored curls leaned back from his drawing. Today it was a bird's eye view of the pre-school. Beside the picture, she noticed that the child had once agian only taken a single bite of each cookie and hardly touched his juice. Her brow furrowed.
"Have you been climbing agian?" She asked, though for some reason, she knew he hadn't. She'd never seen him do so, but how else would he know about the red frisbee stuck on the roof? She opened her mouth to say more, but before she could question Mewt further, the bell rang loudly, signalling the end of the day.
Eager children scrambled to grab their things, and in the commotion of assisting them out the door to their waiting parents, Miss Sarah lost track of Mewt. She didn't help him with his coat or shoes. She didn't see him leave either. But the most important thing she missed that day was the dark grey little Mew waving at her through the open window with a drawing in his paw.

Not long after, thanks to a helpful Teleport, Mewt was back at home. His house was beautiful, a nest of psychically spun tree sap, hardened into a crystalline nest of amber hidden high up in the tree that shaded the the playground of the pre-school. The nest was filled with lost items, scarves and mittens, a coat and a blankie, stuffed animals and even a little doll. All precious items left behind in the yard by child after child. While he would return anything if asked, he often gathered more than he gave, treasuring these tokens of humanity. Lining the inner walls of his nest were layers of crayon covered pictures from his many, many days in this school. While he was still very new to the idea of writing, in the corners his name was written in a messy scrawl.
Purring happily, Mewt gave the back of this new picture a few wide licks and stuck it to the rest, beaming at its perfection.

Pale lavender eyes peered out between leaves from a collection of plants in a small urban garden. There were so many people! And pokemon! Oh, look, one of the pokemon was coming closer. The orange and light red and white four-footed thing sniffed around, then looked up. Oooh, it had green eyes! It seemed surprised. Lavender eyes reached out a white paw. Boop! …oh. It didn’t seem to like having its nose booped. …Time to go! ~~~~ “Row-row-row-row!”
“Lily Rose, no!”
“Watch it kid!” “Control that pokemon!” “Hey!”
“Sorry!” Joey called over his shoulder to various disgruntled townspeople. Lily Rose was chasing something, and, unable to get a good sightline to recall her to her pokeball, all Joey could do was chase her and hope she got tired before he did. Unfortunately, experience told Joey that the Growlithe had much more stamina than he did. Joey thought he’d seen a flash of grey, white, and maybe blue flying ahead of Lily Rose. Maybe a Pidove? Sometimes those had a little blue, right? Augh, what did it matter? “Lily Rose!”
Ahead, Joey just caught the end of Lily Rose’s fluffy tail disappearing into what looked like an abandoned building. Stumbling into the building, Joey saw Lily Rose standing in the middle of the room, barking at the ceiling. He quickly pulled out Lily Rose’s pokeball and recalled her.
“Mew-ew-ew-ew!” A chiming laugh filled the air. Joey whirled around, trying to figure out where it came from.
“Gah!” he jumped as something poked him from behind. Spinning around he found…nothing but empty space, and another chiming laugh. As he peered around, something ruffled his hair.
~~~
That had been fun! The orange-red-white-four-paws-barks-and-chases made a lot of noise, but was too slow to actually catch up. It was lots of fun to play tag though! Lavender eyes hid in a building, and look, a two-paws! …Aww, four paws went away with the red light. …maybe two paws wanted to play! Giggles escaped lavender eyes as he hovered by the ceiling. Two paws kept looking around. Lavender eyes snuck closer, being careful not to be seen. Then…poke! Back to the ceiling! Hehehe, two paws still hadn’t looked UP! Reaching down with a fluffy tail, he ruffled the fur on top of two paw’s head.
~~~
Joey jumped, then, on a sudden suspicion, looked up. That…wasn’t a Pidove. It was a floating…cat thing? After a moment, Joey’s eyes widened. “You’re a Mew!” he whispered in awe.
“Mew!” the legendary chirped back.
Joey wasn’t sure if that was agreement, mimicry, or just random noise. He fumbled at zipper to his bag. “Uh…nice Mew? Good Mew. Do you want a poffin?” he offered, holding up the treat.
~~~
Lavender eyes rolled into a slow backflip, then floated over to look at the thing the human was offering. After bobbing around it to examine it from several angles, he snatched it and floated back up to the ceiling. Squeezing it between his paws, he giggled. It was soft! After contemplating the thing for a moment, he sniffed it, then licked it. Oh! Yummy!
~~~
Joey watched nervously as the Mew devoured the poffin, making what Joey interpreted as pleased noises.
~~~
Um, yum, delicious. All gone. Lavender eyes licked his paws clean, gave his face a quick wash, then looked at the two-legs. Hmm. Yummy thing came from bag. Bag looked soft and a good nest size.
~~~
Joey flinched when the mew darted towards him, but it turned out the Mew…wanted in his bag? The gray and white tail stuck out of the bag, twitching comically as rustling sounds came from inside the bag. Then more rustling, and the tail pulled into the bag as lavender eyes peered out. The Mew looked at Joey for a moment, then…started eating another poffin?!
“Uh…” What did you do when a legendary crawled into your bag and ate your poffins? After a moment, Joey sighed. Where does a Snorlax sleep? Anywhere it likes. That old saw was probably even more true for legendaries.
As Joey watched, the small pokemon finished the second poffin, washed its paws and face, then burrowed further into the bag. Shortly after, small whistling snores could be heard. Joey sighed. It looked like he had a new friend.
