Quote:
You arrive some distance away from the area outlined as potentially having a natural portal, and being to scout things out.

Location:

Roll 1d8 until you gain 10 SP (scouting points) which lead you to the portal area.

1. You notice a group of strange birds. As they fly past, most seem to have two heads. (1 SP)
2. A tree lifts out of the ground, its roots forms two legs as it walks away. (2 SP)
3. There is a flickering in the corner of your eye, as if the channel had briefly been changed on reality. (3 SP)
4. You see your reflection in a mirror. Upon closer inspection you realize there is no mirror, only another you looking back. You blink and they're gone. (3 SP)
5. You find a section of dead grass with odd shaped footprints burned into it. (1 SP)
6. There is something that looks very much like a unicorn in the distance. (2 SP)
7. You feel a sudden, terrible heat, as if lava surround you. (2 SP)
8. Air is suddenly difficult to breath, as if you're very, very high up. (2SP)

You've been given a set of four runic knives to create a barrier around the portal and close it. They must be planted very precisely, one for each of the four cardinal directions. As you plant them, the words to awaken the runes are: borealis (north) australis (south) occidentalis (west) and orientalis (east). When all four are activated, speak the phrase, "A caelo usque ad centrum," in order to finish the process and seal the portal.

Closure:

For each dagger and the closure, the person doing it will need to roll, for a collective 5 rolls.

Roll 2d20

The first die is the prompt you receive. The second die is the damage done to you while your shield comes into contact with the unstable portal.

1-3: You step into the shoes of someone else in your life, either in your past, present, or even future. You are a passive but aware presence in their mind as a memory of your own plays out. You see yourself and your actions through their eyes. When the vision clears, you're able to speak the activation.

4-7: You find yourself reliving the worst moment of your life. You are not a passive presence, but an active one. You're able to make things go differently, though the results may not be what you hoped for. When the vision clears, you're able to speak the activation.

8-10: You are a future you, a very likely you, and you are dying. You are a passive presence, forced to watch the scene play out but not interfere. When the vision clears, you're able to speak the activation.

11-14. You wake up a different you. In the mirror you see changes, small and large, the ones you'd always wanted. The place you wake up in is the sort you'd always dreamed of. The people you wake up to are your ideals, and everything about them is exactly as you'd like them to be. If there was a checklist of everything you'd ever equated to an ideal life, this is it. When the vision clears, you're able to speak the activation.

15-18: You wake up a different you. In the mirror you see changes, small and large, and it's as if every single flaw has been increased, made more obvious. The place you wake up in is the sort you'd always feared you'd have to live in. The people there are those who make you miserable, and everything about them is now worse. Like you, every flaw has been exposed and inflated to make existence unbearable. If there was a checklist for your worst living nightmare of existence in general, this is it.

19-20: Wildcard - you can pick any of the above, or create your own vision prompt. When the vision clears, you're able to speak the activation.

The portal seals and there is a sudden air of rightness that exudes the area. Areas that had once housed strange phenomena are back to normal. The air is crisp and clean, and you stand a little taller, as if an oppressive force was no longer weighing you down.

It was an incredible delight to have received a text requesting her presence for promotion. It was an incredible amusement to see who else was also requested for the same promotion. Claude was silent, as usual of course, as they were briefed by a senior hunter, and decided that over all, this mission didn't seem bad in comparison to all the horror stories she had heard thus far. After the briefing, they were told to get ready to go, and once they were out of the meeting room and heading to the portals, did Claude tilt her head towards her mission partner and deadpanned:

"It's a small world."

"You're welcome." Her tone had a smug edge to it, which melted as soon as they reached the lighthouse and portal'd to their mission coordinates. She did think it was rather nice to be in New Zealand...where, she had absolutely no idea, but it didn't really matter. The trainee adjusted her hat as she stepped away from the portal, and surveyed the surrounding area. Something flickered, and Claude's head snapped back towards where she thought she saw some disturbance as she blinked, stilling.

"...Hm."

They must be close, which was a pleasant surprise. She almost expected to be dumped miles away from the unstable portal.

"Ready?" She asked, ready to get down to business to defeat some huns and complete this mission.

Chance just pushed Claude's shoulders in the hopes that she would tip over, but to no avail.

On the other side of the portal was vast and beachy, with a fair amount of strange looking shrubberies that surrounded them. He bent and picked up the supplies that had been left for them, and although he wasn't dressed quite as piratey as some people, he was dressed comfortably, in a pair of artfully torn jeans, a black teeshirt with a spray of stars across it, and his trainee coat, a white beanie on his head to cover most of his curls.

"See something?" Chance asked mildly, stepping up beside Claude and peering around her to try and follow her gaze. "Where the hell are we, anyway? Is this the part in the horror movie where you take me out into an abandoned lot and kill me or force feed me tofu or something?"

He thought he saw something - a flicker of light, or perhaps just a trick of where they were standing?

"What are we supposed to do again?"

Said pirate wasn't dressed as hipster as some people, and stood firm when he attempted to tip her.

"Something." Claude agreed. "Fluctuations from the nearby natural portal, I assume." While Chance peered around, Claude peered at him with a quirked brow. "Way to pay attention, Bones." She drawled, reaching up to pull his beanie down over his eyes, but then snorted softly, amused. "That's very specific." Claude commented in regards to force feeding him tofu. "I could tell you...but then I'd have to kill you. Sooner." She clucked her tongue, and then started to head in the direction she had that blip in vision.

"We're somewhere in New Zealand to seal off a natural portal." She told him, and came to a stop once more. The grass around here was incredibly luscious, so dead patch stuck out like a sore thumb...along with the burn marks that seemed to resemble foot prints.

"Seems we're heading in the right direction." She murmured.

"Well, as long as they aren't aliens coming to abduct us," said Chance airily.

There was a pause, and then -

"Actually, scratch that, I think I would have fun with aliens because then I'd be in outer space, and that would be the s**t."

He took a few more steps, peering around, and batted Claude's hand away from his hat, pushing it back up so that he could see properly. "Well, that's just rude," Chance said conversationally. "And New Zealand is pretty badass. Too bad we're not here to sightsee, there's some pretty cool s**t in this place."

His eyes moved to the footprints, and Chance frowned a little.

"Or maybe we're going back to that whole alien idea. I kind of liked that theory."

Claude let out another soft amused snort. "Way to look at the bright side." Of alien abduction. "Good thing you're familiar with a**l probing."

She quickly followed up that comment with another, "Add New Zealand to your list. It's a beautiful country. Also, there's a place called the Waitomo Glowworm Caves...the glowworms line the top of the caves and look like stars." She looked back at the foot prints too. "Mn." The alien theory might not be too far off...

Movement was caught in the corner of her eye, and Claude looked up to see a some birds fly past--

She stared.

Kiwis didn't fly. Much less have two heads.

"Excuse me," said Chance delicately, as he took a few steps to the left, squinting to try and figure out what exactly they were supposed to do. "I like to think I'm more an expert on things other than that - but yes, I suppose I am rather familiar, you little s**t."

He smirked at her. Well played, Claude, well played.

"Glow worms? Like bugs?" Not that he minded too much. Chance looked relatively intrigued by the idea. "I'm down for that, maybe sometime after we get back we can turn around and come see the caves, because that sounds like it could be pretty cool."

The birds made him question everything about science, but strangely, not his own sanity.

"What the actual ********," said Chance, tugging at the collar of his coat in discomfort. A bead of sweat slid down the side of his face. "Also, is it just me, or is it really ******** hot here?"

She just smirked back. There was nothing else to be said. "Mn." She uttered in agreement this time. A rather fantastical experience, to be enthralled by the luminous wonder of bug a**...the thought amused her. Never mind despite breaking it down so crudely, she'd still go see it, and probably still find it fascinating none the less...

Another group of two headed flying kiwi zipped by, and Claude couldn't stop staring at the oddities. She didn't answer him for a moment, and then glanced back at him, a brow quirked. "I don't feel any different..." Hm. Chance was sweating though. "Another portal fluctuation, I assume."

"A man of many words, you are Claude," Chance deadpanned, lifting a hand to fan at his throbbing face. "My gosh it's ******** hot, I don't know how you can't feel that, I feel like I'm melting into a puddle. I mean, I suppose it's better than freezing, but Ace is supposed to keep me cool all the time."

{ I don't know what is the matter } came the gentle reply, the weapon sounding worried, but Chance just shook it off.

"Jeez, I gotta get out of here. Or something. I mean, I like it hot, but not this kind of hot.."

He trailed off, frowning. There was someone looking at him, someone who looked damn familiar, and for a second Chance thought he was staring at himself, at a reflection, at something that was very much him, and -

- then it was gone. He blinked rapidly, lashes sticking together.

"What the ******** is this place?"

"Mn." Was the absent minded sound to his 'man of few words' crack. Kiwis didn't fly. This was breaking science right now. She was so damn fascinated with watching them fly.

Chance's plight managed to break her away from the birds, and her brows knitted lightly together in concern as she looked at him more closely. "It doesn't feel any different to me--" She moved towards him, and came across fluctuation he was feeling.

Holy s**t.

"I do now.

In a mindless gesture, her fingers found one of his elbows and she started to guide him away in hopes of escaping that fluctuation. "Let's keep moving." She murmured, wiping the bead of sweat that ran down the back of her neck with her free hand.

"Yes, see, now you understand," said Chance in mild exasperation, but he just gave Claude's shoulder a friendly push, wiping his brow with the back of his hand. He'd honestly meant it when he'd said he liked the heat better than the cold, but this was definitely more than a little excessive.

"Maybe if we keep going, we'll hit a polar ice cap next," Chance joked, then tried not to stare at what he thought was a -

He shook his head.

"I think I found the spot, over here."

"You should chill, Chance." Also, she wasn't content to go just yet. She apparently wanted to be really thorough in scouting the area.

No, apparently she needed to chill. Claude walked into menopause another hot spot, and immediately whipped right back around to get away from it. No more scouting. It was good. Chance had a sight on the spot.

"Good." She stood near the trainee, gesturing to the supplies he picked up earlier. "There should be four runic knives. We're going to create a barrier. You take two, and I'll take two." She held out her hand, waiting for him to give her two of them. "Do you remember the incantations?" She asked him with a quirked brow, just to be sure.
