Isaleen paced back and forth glancing up the mountainside, it was much too tall for her to even hope to climb. She had tried a couple of times and had landed with scraped up paw pads and a cut side in the process. The little Ulaya huffed as she plopped her butt on the ground glancing up the mountain side. Her little tail wiggled in agitation as she huffed.
Someone had told her that atop this mountain was a family of Draco’ula. She had been so excited at the prospect of meeting a whole family that she had instantly set off to find them. She hadn’t expect the mountain to be so high, or even worse that there wouldn’t be a path up the thing. She slowly sunk to the ground with a sigh, her legs were weary, she hadn’t stopped many times on the trip here.
She couldn’t give up of course but perhaps a nap was in order. The little ulaya was so tired after all. She could hardly keep her eyes open, and her body was so sore. Yes, she could find a way up the mountain after she rested for a bit. It was a warm sunny day after all, the perfect kind of day for picnic or time spent with friends.

Warm sunny days like this were perfect for flying. At least, Dinah thought, that was the ideal... in theory. Perched at a cliff's edge, wings out from her body just a little, enough so she could feel how strongly the wind up here could give the lift she needed. This wasn't the first time the young ulaya had perched here, poised and ready, nor the first she'd leaped from somewhere high up. Although the most she'd accomplished so far was a lot of gliding. Flying was her goal.
"Okay," she whispered to herself, crouched and spread her wings further, lifting them high and wide, stretching them as far as they would go and then leaping forward with a joyful, wordless shout.
There was more to this flying business than being suspended in the air, she'd found. The noise of the wind past her ears was not quite deafening, but nearly. Dinah tucked her ears back and looked around. Still not flying, she was actually falling at a pretty rapid rate. Out and way from the mountain side, and not straight down. Everything as planned then.
Deciding that learning how to turn was the first order of business, Dinah tucked her legs up close to her body and looked around to orient herself. Craning her neck too far one way caused her to list in that direction, she giggled, and adjusted her tail to increase the angle of her turn. Now while she was still falling she was making a wide spiraling arc. This was exactly how Mother had explained it, finding it worked just as she said it would was no surprise but the experience was amazing all the same.
The rest of the trip down was spent seeing just how tight or loose she could spiral by adjusting her tail and wings, it took a lot time for ground to draw close, but then all at once Dinah noticed just how close it was and wow dang, she'd better level off and look for a good place to land quick.

Isa had just settled in, the warmth of the sun on her pelt and the breeze passing over making for a wonderful combination. Her eyes had fluttered closed instantly allowing her imagination to soar over the possibilities of what a Draco’ula might look like. She had obviously heard stories but it wasn’t the same thing as seeing one in person. Their mighty wingspread, being able to fly! Oh how she would love to be able to fly, and breathing fire was also pretty neat! She wiggled slightly at her thoughts, before she felt a shadow pass over her body. That was strange, that had been a very large bird. She peaked open an eye before glancing up at the sky, strange she didn’t see anything just yet; not that she could seem much looking into the sun. Yet she was sure she had felt a shadow.
Her ears flicked this way and that attempting to catch the sound of someone, anyone but there was nothing. So she settled back down her head going back to lay on her paws, but she kept her eyes open this time. Her ears still alert just incase she caught the sound of something passing overhead. She stayed completely still for a good long while before deciding perhaps it had just been a very large bird passing over. Just when she was about to settle back down she saw it again and this time she also heard it, the wooshing of air under wings. She sat bolt upright her ears flicking back and forth in a flurry as she tried to pinpoint the sound.
She moved glancing up at the sky as she wandered around in the middle of her clearing, she might could climb a bit up the mountain onto the higher rocks to see better? She stepped one way and then the other before looking at the rocks. Well maybe one more attempt to get up on some of the higher ones wouldn’t hurt. She really wanted to see what that big bird was. She had just moved towards the rock when she saw the vaguest of outlines against the sky pass over. Was that… no it couldn’t be. Though whatever it was it did look a lot like it wanted to land! She squeaked as she made a bolt for the shelter of the woods around her, as fast as her little legs would carry her, which wasn’t very fast at all.

As it happened, Dinah was aiming at the very clearing that Isaleen was darting around in, although the draco hadn't yet caught sight of the frenzied ulaya. Making wide arcing passes to take full advantage of what lift she could manage to keep, Dinah still hadn't tried flapping until now. Trying didn't mean succeeding and try as she might she wasn't gaining altitude or slowing much for her efforts. Landing after all her previous short gliding flights hadn't been much of a problem, she'd never been so high off the ground nor moving so fast as this.
"Oh, oh no, no," came a quiet cry before she touched down, legs spread stiffly, paws sliding on loose stones and leaf litter. She nearly managed to keep herself upright but a wayward root caught her off guard and she tumbled the final few feet before coming to a complete stop in a heap of limbs and nature. "Ow."
Dinah sighed as she started to sit up, not in the habit of talking to herself aloud, still the occasional word or phrase would slip out, now she was berating herself internally. Giving her head a shake to clear it, lifting each of her front paws to check how bad she'd gotten scraped up. They didn't sting nearly as bad as her back ones did, the pads torn from her braking attempt. She didn't want to look.
At least she had not fallen on her wings, Dinah opened her eyes now, craning her neck (also ow) to peer back at them. Stretched wide but quickly lowered, folded down against her back. Looking past herself, each twinge and sore muscle forgotten and she smiled, sheepishly, in greeting.
