I recently put both of my stories on hold and it's really strange. There have been a few positive outcomes, such as a decrease in my anxiety levels since I'm no longer trying to balance class work, research work, my weird personal/semi-professional life, and fanfiction writing. However, I set a date for my hiatus to end and I find myself already wanting to break that date... for only one of my stories.

See, the thing is I'm passionate about only one of my two (yeah, weak number) stories and I feel kinda bad that I'm just leaving the other one high and dry since some people actually read it. My issue is that I loathe the situation I was in when I was writing that story, so I'm not tripping all over myself to pick it back up. Dumb reason? Probably, but that's just how it is.

I'm mostly annoyed with myself in this situation because I wanted to break my hiatus almost immediately after I set it. Like right when I set a solid start and end date for my hiatus, I had this sudden writing spree and a desire to just start publishing chapter after chapter after chapter. I am the textbook definition of being indecisive. However, I'm sticking to my guns and I won't break the date.

How about you all? Have you ever put a story on hiatus? If you have, how was it (e.g., relaxing, stressful, not much of anything) and why did you put the story on hiatus? Are you loathe to put anything on hold? Do you just let stories sit without updating them but you don't ever "officially" say that they're on hold?

Sometimes stories just have to go on a break. Regardless of whether its because of school, work, family, or even just you lost interest in the fandom. A story really suffers when the author's attention is divided, or has to force it. Putting a story on hiatus until you can continue it serious will create a better product.

I, myself, have several fics on hiatus (across multiple fandoms).

Have you ever put a story on hiatus?
Oh yeahhh. I probably have like 5 fics on hiatus with a less than 1% chance of being updated again.

If you have, how was it (e.g., relaxing, stressful, not much of anything) and why did you put the story on hiatus?
I do it out of pure laziness. xd
If a fic runs more than 5 chapters then I start to lose motivation. I'm one of those "write and post one chapter at a time" authors.

Are you loathe to put anything on hold?
I feel a little bad for doing it without a proper reason, but it doesn't stop me. sweatdrop

...Yes, except for one of my Sailor Moon stories. For that I did have a reason to stop continuing it.

Tbh, the majority of my inactive stories are all on hiatus.

...I should feel guilty, but it's relieving at the same time. There's so much I want to do, but everytime I go back to write it's all disorganized. I've scrapped more chapter attempts than those I've kept and I've kept 0 so far. But most of the time, my main reasons for putting them on hiatus are

-work
-school
-massive writer's block

Ooh, have you ever completed a fic? I'm also one of those "write and post one chapter at a time" authors, so... I've never completed a story in my life. Well, I've never completed one that's up on a website. sweatdrop And now that I've had a taste of "official" hiatus status, I feel like I'm going to go all hiatus-happy whenever I get bored so then I never will complete either of the stories that I have up!

See, I had an inactive story and it took me a few months and some follow alerts to realize, "Oh, damn. I should probably say that this is on hiatus..." The only thing that makes me feel guilty is that I pretty much have no intention of picking that one story up again. Ever. But I don't want to post that I'm abandoning it because I'm prone to changing my mind. sweatdrop

Scrapping a bunch of chapters because it's just not working? I understand that feeling. Writer's block is one of the most annoying things I've experienced. I think it's mostly frustrating because you either have the ideas and can't make it work or you have nothing but tumbleweeds in your head but you want to write. Ugh.

I've completed lots of oneshots and the longest fic I've ever finished lasted 4 chapters.

I tried writing chapters in advance and posting them in a schedule, but I'm too impatient in wanting others to read it that I can't stick to the plan. sweatdrop

I actually started writing for a series I thought I would have abandoned years ago. And I only wrote it again because I was in the middle of writing a WIP and the plot bunny bit me until I put the chapter I was working on on hold to write the oneshot.

But I've found that scrapping the chapters isn't so bad anymore. I still save what I wrote because there's still something good to them--even though I cringe at the majority of it. gonk xd
