I'm thinking of doing voice acting!!!
Although there's bits of problems here and there, like background noise, no money to pay mic, can't do male voice 'coz I'm not a male and the list goes on.
I'm thinking of downloading free recording software... Let's see what I can do from here.

So what we all need... Money.
And I don't have anything like that as of now.
Also I need a real mic, for pete's sake, and a pop filter.
Whatever... Forget voice acting for now.

But I'd feel guilty if someone just pays for my mic. I hear they can cost expensively confused I also need to practice more since I don't have any background when it comes to Voice Acting though that won't prevent me from doing so xd

So I bought a very very cheap mic (that I know won't last for a month, or maybe a week) that has only one jack for plugging. (The jack has two rings on it, and it's 3.55mm as said in the description)....
My laptop has only one hole for plugging jacks (I like to use the word "hole") and it's where I usually insert the jack for my earphones...
And of course the problem is... The mic doesn't work.
My laptop has a built in mic... And its the only thing that works. Not the external mic.
I played with the setting... Typing "Sound" on the Search in my laptop... There's this "Mic in at front panel" and no matter what I do, it still says "Not Plugged in". I can disable and enable it... But I can't set it as a Default Device... And I've read advices that says I should set it as default device, but I can't... The button is "greyed"...
What should I do, people? sad

From my (somewhat limited) knowledge about computers, there's one 'hole' on the computer/laptop for headphones and there's suppose to be another for mic and recording. The one for recording usually has a small picture of a mic next to it and the one on my laptop is red while the one for my headphones is black and they're right next to each other.
I'm not sure what laptop you have though and what mic you bought so...

Weird as it sounds... But that's all I have.

Did you get it to work yet? If not, what kind of laptop do you have? It's unusual that it doesn't have a separate hole for mic. :0

Einya Did you get it to work yet? If not, what kind of laptop do you have? It's unusual that it doesn't have a separate hole for mic. :0 I have an HP laptop. I got it working after minutes of plugging and unplugging it again. I set my default mic as the external mic so that I won't be able to use the built in mic in the laptop. I can record in audacity. Though I have to unplug the mic to listen to the recorded sound. I can't play records with the mic plugged in. Its a little bit annoying since it's so difficult to make the mic work. When you plug mic to laptops, does it produce echo? Because mine doesn't.

So you can record, but its very finicky? It might be due to the mic itself then, you said it was a pretty cheap one? How much and what brand is it?
Also you can only listen to your recording after taking out the mic because it seems as though that hole is both mic and headphone, so if you plug in your mic and try to listen at the same time the laptop might think that the mic is a headphone.

[colaccommodate es it seems that my laptop thinks that the mic is a headphone. When I record it has the same quality I get with my built in mic on my laptop. Or maybe my laptop's built in mic is better. So I'm ditching that mic. It's very cheap, worth less than 3 dollars. That cheap. It's not branded. Even so, I still thought that I could get it work like a normal mic but there's a lot of flaws. Or it could be that my laptop really is the problem or that it can't accommodate mics...? Since maybe that one hole is just suited for headphones?... I should have just bought that USB mic...

It seems as though some laptops actually only have one 'hole' (proper term is apparently jack) for both mic and headphone so that's probably the case with your laptop. If you have money you might want to invest in a proper mic, but if the one on your laptop works well you can use that for now until you're sure you need to use an actual mic. I suppose you should record when its quiet and maybe talk real close to the speaker?

There's a time where the whole place is quiet and I've tried recording, but it still has this minimal background noise... like some electric fan is opened during the recording... I don't know if know that sound lol, but you can hear some 'airy' sound... confused
