I know that you have to see someone die in order to see the threstals, but didn't Harry see his mother die when he was a child, in the book it said that he was in the room with her when she died and i douht that he was sleeping with all the screaming so woulden't he be able to see threstals in the first place?

I've wondered this for a while... I had always thought that Harry should have seen the Thestrals because he had seen his parents (or just his mom) die. The only conclusion I can come up with is that somehow he either didn't directly see it or that he was just too young. In the movie, didn't it show Lily putting him in the crib? I know that the movies are a far cry from the books, but that could explain why he didn't actually see the death happen. And then my whole theory about him being too young is squashed by the fact that he was having dreams/nightmares about flashes of green light in Sorecerer's Stone. That would make me think that he saw it. Meh. I'm rambling now. whee

Rowling said that he didn't see them in the beginning because he was a baby when he saw his parents die so he couldn't comprehend the deaths. Directly after Cedric's death it hadn't quite sunken it yet. Or at least I'm pretty sure I remember her saying that.

Yes, Basil, I do think that's right. I'm pretty sure she said something about having to be able to comprehend the death to see the Thestrals.

I read somewhere (I think it was something J K Rowling said, because that is what I normally pay attention to) that Harry didn't actually SEE his mother die, all he saw was the flash of green light. (Remember when the dementors are around and in night mares all Harry gathers is a flash of green light and a scream?) He never actually saw Quirrel die in Philosophers Stone because he had passed out already. Voldemort never dies (yet), just bits of soul and memory destroyed. So he never actually SEES any of the deaths occur until Cedric, after which he can see the thestrals.

She also didn't feel like introducing the threstals at the end of book four... her answer to that question is actually funny. So she decided that it would have to 'sink in' afterwards...
