The store was closed though the lights were still on. The shades in the front had been pulled down, the front door locked and the sign flipped, but the side employee entrance, the one that also garnered access to the upstairs apartment stairs, was still unlocked. Alg had music playing since he'd recently been introduced to spotify through one of the employees, and since the Beatles had just been recently added he was enjoying the catalog while doing some restocking. An unlit pipe was clenched in his teeth, just packed, and he puffed on nothing to just enjoy the subtle taste. He happened to be hovering a foot in the air to pop something on a shelf, toe tapping on absolutely nothing as he hummed and bopped along to Eleanor Rigby. Violetta was sticking by him, sleeping in the empty box the new stock had come from, the whole mass of it become soft and mossy and trash.

Kally sighed when she tried the side door to Bibliophile and found it unlocked. It wasn't that she was tired, or anything; she felt fairly awake. She did need to stash her cash tips from her day's work, though, and she'd taken to doing that in a place where she was fairly confident no one was going to take it. It was certainly more secure than rolling up the crumpled ones and fives into thick cylinders and hoping no one wanted to look in her bag. Having stashed her well-earned dollars, she went downstairs again. If the door was unlocked, she could get some cleaning done, maybe even some minor repair work. One of the bookshelves needed staining to hide someone's graffiti'd carving of a rather rude cuss word, and she'd picked some up on the way over to take care of later. Instead, she found herself sidetracked by Violetta and her box. "Hey sweetie," she said, leaning down to gather Violetta up into her arms. As she straightened, she spotted Algie and paused. "Sir, you're floating," she said. "Do you mean to be?"

"All the lonely people-" Alg's foot tapped to the violins until he heard a voice and froze. The music kept playing, though the professor was no longer singing low or toe-tapping along. He was staring at Kally with his mouth a bit open and slowly sinking to the floor. It wasn't too far off from Peter Pan, without happy thoughts you couldn't fly. "Ah-" Alg took a few steps on the actual floor to set the books he was holding down and removed the unlit pipe from his teeth, "-It was a very slow jump." He should have gone with strangely angled climb. Or not.

Kally blinked like she'd just been faked out, convulsive and autonomous. A punch to the face probably would have surprised her less than the blatant lie. "Yes, sir," she said, because she never called adult men on their lies, even if she could probably kick their a**. "Of course. Sir." She scratched Violetta gently under her chin, carrying the big fluffy cat with her to the offensive bookshelf. "I'll be over here if you need me." Putty. Wood stain. An old toothbrush. These she dropped even as she shifted Violetta to sit across her shoulders like a fluffy, living stole. "Don't see why people have to be rude," she said, a commentary on the graffiti artist rather than Algernon's very slow jump. "D'you, Vee?"

Alg was a bit disappointed that his poorly formed lie was just accepted, but then again she did just sit with his mildly magical cat and not question it either. Alg moved to the computer, turning down the volume on the music to something manageable, and setting his pipe down and books away. "Kally-" Alg leaned on a shelf near where she worked, "Do you see odd things around town? Odder than... usual. Flower blooming cat and floating professor level odd."

"No, sir," said Kally. "I didn't see a floating professor, I saw one jumping. Very slowly." Sarcasm, Kally? Watch your tongue! "And Vee just likes moss, I always thought." She finished filling in the obscene carving with putty and cracked open the jar of wood stain. "I do see strange things sometimes, though. I thought left work at 2am once and got to my next job at 1:45am. Anyway, I saw a little creature made of shadows. He's turned out to be pretty nice actually, calls himself Gloom." Did time just run backwards sometimes? Maybe. She didn't know too well.

"Cheeky," Alg snorted but just shook his head. "You don't question it?" Cats who liked moss didn't just make it. And he'd been totally unaware of Kally having mildly strange experiences and talking with, what sounded like, creatures from other ashdown. He'd never met a Gloom but he'd keep the name in his mind. "Ever have any strange dreams?"

Kally frowned. "I..." To lie or not to lie? If she told the truth, she had no way of being sure she wouldn't get in trouble for it. Same if she lied. The only thing to do, then, was ask a clarifying question: "How do you mean? Everyone has weird dreams sometimes."

Her pause was suspicious but it wasn't his place to push if she didn't want to share. "Weird dreams on a consistent basis. Maybe of another place like this one but different.." Alg felt silly describing it to be honest, "Where you feel like almost like you're awake.. but everything just isn't quite right. A bit like the other ashdown where it rains. The story that people tell around here."

Kally shook her head, relieved. "No, sir, nothing like that. Just, you know, normal things. Sometimes the high school gets besieged by giant spiders and I have to choose between my mom and a baby, you know, stuff like that." She always picked the baby, but... Man, dreaming sucked. She turned her head to give Violetta a kiss on her furry ruff. This had the added effect of hiding her expression. "The otherworld's just a story, Professor," she said. "Ashdown's weird, but it's just... good weird, not crazy weird."

"Of course it is.." Alg smiled a bit and ran a hand through his hair, feeling very foolish indeed. "Are you a Harry Potter fan?" He changed the subject, her mentioning of saving a baby making him think of it, "The new American house sorting is up on the Pottermore website." He chuckled, "They make you choose between a baby and saving thousands of lives.. " He possibly saved the baby. "Oh- ah," Awkward old man was awkward, "how's the apartment working out for you?"

"The baby," said Kally firmly, without thinking about it. She smiled at the mention of the upstairs apartment. "So well," she gushed, "I have somewhere to put all my stuff that isn't Cid's basement, and I can carry around a smaller backpack, and I don't have to worry about my bike getting stolen, and--and I'm keeping it clean, sir, I promise I am!"

"I'm sure you are," He chuckled and adjusted his glasses. "Do you think you are capable of renting it legitmately-" He paused, "With a few small details glossed over." Meaning things like the fact that she was under age.

Kelly's eyes widened for a moment and she fumbled the brush in her hands. "I don't-- I mean, yes, I could, I work really hard, just, are you sure? You would want to do that? For me?"

"Well I know you work, we could sign a short tentative agreement between the two of us," Alg ran a hand idly through his hair. It wasn't so much about money but helping someone who seemed to try to better themselves. He could try and give her a good chance and if she wasn't yet experienced with budgeting and bill paying, this would help in the long run. "And we can settle on a monthly amount. Most rentals require a down payment but I don't need that." It would help them both, he would have someone living in the unused space (abandoned areas were no good for many reasons) and she would have somewhere to live. "When will you be 18?"
