Another day, another seemingly random trip into Other Ashdown. Between the destroyer, and the nightmare shadow seagulls, Shun really hoped he wasn't going to be running into any 'animals' here this time around. He soon realized just where he was, however. Before him stood several mangrove trees, something that wasn't exactly native here. Not normally, anyway. Perhaps, at long last, he had managed to find the place where Heliodora resided. Thanks to the theater incident, he had a better idea of what this place was like, but it was something else to be there in person. Cautiously, he began to approach, making his way in. "...Heliodora?" he called out. shibrogaddddne can shift timeline of this to post meta?

"Yes, hello, I'm here," called a young(ish) voice, sweet and clarion. "Sorry, I was--I wasn't feeling well, I don't suppose you'd understand--" When Shun surfaced from the trees, Heliodora was in her usual mandrake-spot, still hurriedly drying her eyes. "I, um, sorry," she said. "I'm--I was. I got some bad news. I'm fine now." She sniffles, a counterpoint to her statement. "What can I do for you?"

Bad news. That was an understatement. Heliodora was the sole survivor of the missing teens now. Pax or someone else likely had filled her in on the events of the ball. He wasn't sure if the three were friends at all, but he imagined there was some sense of solidarity in the least given their positions in Other Ashdown. Once Shun spotted the girl, he paused, furrowing his brow. "Shun Kuroda," he offered, looking around the immediate space, "Algernon and Jeremiah had told me I could speak with you about a few things, but perhaps now is not a good time to do so."After another pause, he pulled out a book and awkwardly offered it to the girl. Lies of Locke Lamorra. "Either way, you can have this."

"They didn't say it like that, did they," she asked, accepting the book. "I mean, I answer questions because I don't mind it and I get lonely. But I don't need permission from anyone to do anything. This is my demesne. Within it, I rule." Heliodora peeked inside the cover of the book. "Michael and Adoelle were my friends," she said, closing it and the book in her lap. "Adoelle was my... um. Girlfriend."

"They did not. It was more of a suggestion than stating you needed permission," Shun replied. The inside cover had a few quotes from various newspapers and other authors including Patrick Rothfuss and George R. R. Martin, praising Scott Lynch and the title. The detective paused as Heliodora brought up the other two teens. Well... that answered the question of just how close the group was with one another. "Ah... I am sorry to hear that," he stated quietly. It always felt strange to him to say sorry for these things, but that was how it went, "If you would prefer to talk that over first, my questions can wait."An offer for her to vent it out.

Heliodora nodded. "No," she said. "It's alright. I knew what I was doing. What we were going to do. What do you want to know?"

Shun nodded slowly, then drew in a deep breath, "I would like to know more about magic. How to use it here, specifically. I know it has to do with willpower, but it seems there is a bit more to it than just wanting something to happen."

"What d'you already know," asked Heliodora. "I mean, yes, it is more than just wanting something to happen. You need, um, specificity, and intent--you have to know what you want to happen and how you want it to happen..." She trailed off. "I don't really know what to tell you?"

"So the more details I have in mind, the better?" he asked, "Pretty much all I know so far is that will is tied to it. Stronger the will, the better the outcome. Or something like that."Shun furrowed his brow and sighed. Maybe he was making this more complicated than it really was, somehow. "Is it possible for someone to just... lack the talent to do much with it?"

Heliodora laughed. "No," she said. "It's like any other talent. If you want to work at it, you will, and you'll find out how to work with what you know. Like, me? I like to use pop culture references. Because I know what the words are meant to do and I want them to work more than anything, when I say Lumos--" A brilliant blue light flared in her uplifted hand. "--you see? But if you don't like Harry Potter or don't have that image in your head, it won't work."

Shun watched her cast the spell with curiosity. That was an interesting way of going about it. It was also a relief to hear that anyone could get it down if they put the time and effort into it. "I see... Just a matter of finding my place with it, I suppose," he murmured, "How did you go about learning that? Or did it just come naturally because you are such a big fan of Harry Potter?"

Heliodora's brow furrowed. "I mean, maybe," she said. "It helped that I already had such a concrete image in my head of how the spells in Harry Potter looked. Like a default keybinding in a computer program--that's how Adoelle described it--I think of lumos and I know what it should look like, what it should feel like. Just like if I think of my mother--" And the clearing smelled, suddenly, of hot asphalt after a summer storm, faint sharp notes of Elizabeth Taylor's Passion perfume, floral with a strange undertone. "--I can remember how she smelled. How she smiled." She sounded sad. "But I don't remember her face or her voice or whether her hands were soft or not... so I can't call her here." She sighed. "Are you a very visual person? My method may not work for you."

As the scent in the clearing suddenly shifted, Shun lifted his head. He glanced around, instinctively, but nothing had actually changed about the place. Not physically, anyway. He turned back towards Heliodora, tilting his head. It must have been a powerful memory, the scent, for her to be able to conjure it up like that. Then again, scent was supposedly the sense most tied to memories. When had been the last time Adoelle had been here, he wondered. Or perhaps the better question was, how long ago was it for Heliodora specifically? "I tend to be, or at least I think I am," he replied.

"Okay, um..." Heliodora closed her eyes. "So... it's sort of a guided visualization thing. If you can get a strong picture in your head of the result, then it's more likely to happen, right? I don't know what you want to use magic for, but, um. It's just something you need to practice." She pulled out a ball of yarn and knitting needles. "If you want to practice here, that's okay. You should start with summoning something simple, though. Like a light. And you've got to know that light. What it's made of. What it feels like in your hand. The color of the light as it shines. Does it smell like anything?"

"A means for defense when I am here, as well as to get around more easily if possible. Adaptation," he stated with a shrug. Shun fell silent for a moment, then nodded. He held his right hand out, staring down into his palm. He began to focus, visualizing a dim orb of pale yellow light there. Something that was also light in weight and feel, as if it were a glowing ball of fluff. No scent. Why would light have a scent?
