University of California: Coast City
"Let there be light!"

The University of California was present in Coast City before Mongul's attack and was destroyed during killing thousands of students and staff alike who were on the campus at the time. The resounding effect that the attack had on the University as a whole was phenomenal, so much so, that U of C were heavily considering never returning to Coast City or the surrounding areas again. They were not an active part in the rebuilding of Coast City despite how helpful it would have been for both them and the city and even after the construction was completed; the University were still hesitant to return.

It was Carol Ferris of Ferris Aircraft who pointed out not only the miracle that was Coast City's rebirth and the huge amount of benefits it would have for the University if they decided to return. There were now tonnes of building and Architecture firms making bases in Coast City after they had helped with the reconstruction as well as other small businesses that were making their way home after years spent in exile. Not to mention the fact that Ferris Aircraft was also going through a new Golden Age. The Universiy eventually returned, building their own campus and making it specialize in Business and Engineering as well as Architecture. Within a few years, the Univeristy was ranked within the top 10 for Engineering based courses whilst being top 20 for architecture.

xxx’Four years…’ Examining a small, decorative key between her fingers, Cheon was reminiscing about the day she’d received the odd package in her mailbox. No return address, no information at all… the envelope had only Cheon’s name on it in the front and a red wax seal in the back. It was the night Cheon’s magic seemed to change. Her mentor, Oana, had noticed the moment the girl stepped in for her lessons the following day – there was something different about Cheon. A change in her aura, as the woman had described. And when Cheon had given the blind old teacher the envelope with the key and the note it seemed to the old crone as if all the pieces of the puzzle had finally fit together. She could sense where it came from, and to whom it belonged... an energy signature that even the blind Homo magi had no difficulty pinpointing. ”Chae-yeong…” In the heavily-accented croaky whisper of a voice, her mentor had begun to explain in the most convoluted way the changes that were about to happen. ”This key that you have received… it comes from a powerful magician.” Slow and deliberate, the woman’s words would forever be engrained into Cheon’s memory. ”You… of all the Homo magi on this planet… were chosen to be its keeper. My dear child, you now hold a legacy greater than you could ever imagine. A legacy that Madam Oana knew you had the potential for.. long before I ever met you.” In the four years since it happened, Cheon would never get any closer to understanding her former teacher’s words. A legacy? Sure, heroes would eventually pop up from the woodwork over the next four years and claim familiar titles, but that meant absolutely nothing to her. ”Your destiny, my child.” Though blind, Madam Oana always seemed to know the feelings and emotions that ran through Cheon’s head. ”The Zatara family has chosen you. Zatanna… has chosen you.”

’University Station’ Jolted from her little daydreaming session, Cheon stuffed the key back into her pocket as she got up from her seat and headed off the train. ’Zatanna…' A name that even Cheon was quite familiar with - she was a pretty big deal in the community before she vanished without a trace, like all the other heroes of the world on that day. Zatanna's magic was unique. Powerful. But in the two and a half years that Cheon had trained with Oana, the girl had known there was absolutely no way she would ever reach that level of potential. 'There’s no way I could do what you used to do.’ Following the death of her teacher, Cheon had decided once and for all to put magic on the backburner, and instead of searching for a new mentor she took the next two years to complete a bachelor’s degree – no easy task even for a gifted individual, but one that Cheon was determined to accomplish, and only did she graduate with honors, the girl would then move on to be accepted into a Doctorate-level program at UC Coast City. Three months had passed since she started at the University, and already the girl was swamped with work, papers, assignments, grading, and meetings.
                                                            -------------------------------------------------------

xxxThe department building was only about a block away from the station, located in the architect's corner of the campus. Hers was a joint research project with the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Architecture, where she was investigating design through the ages with a focus on the Americas, and with a private office on the top floor that faced the campus, she couldn't really complain much about anything apart from the workload. Setting her bag down, Cheon pulled her laptop out to take one quick glance at her presentation before heading to the department’s conference room. It was her week to present on the most recent developments of her project – mandatory for students, because the department needed to know where their money was going. Fortunately for her, Cheon had just made a breakthrough in her findings and was expecting rave reviews. Yet oddly enough, when Cheon arrived to the conference room she noticed that no one was there. ”Strange…” She muttered under her breath. Normally, the professor showed up as early as the student to help with last minute touches to the presentation. Chalking it up to traffic, Cheon shrugged it off and began to set the room up.

A streak of shadow stole Cheon’s attention away from the computer. ”Um… Professor…?” She called out, scoping the room out carefully as she traced with her eyes the direction she thought the shadow had gone. But it seemed to have vanished. ”Professor?” Was it just her imagination? But before she knew it, some invisible force seemed to pull her backwards, knocking her off balance as she landed with a thud against the whiteboard. ”Wh—wha?” As her blurred vision began to clear, Cheon could see a now shadowy figure rummaging through her purse. ”Who the fu—“ When the figure realized it had been spotted, it raised a hand, muttering an incantation in some exotic language which sent a ball of electrified energy at Cheon. Esrepsid!” With a single command and a flick of her wrist, Cheon disabled the magical attack just in time to watch as the figure made a run for it with her purse. ’My USB… s**t.’ The most important thing in her purse wasn’t her wallet, not even the mysterious key she had been told to safeguard. No. For Cheon, it was the USB containing her life’s work – her thesis. (Priorities, much?)

Feeling the anger begin to kick in, Cheon gritted her teeth as she kicked off the wall and made a run for it. Evig em retaw!" With her hands aimed forward at the thief, Cheon drew all of the water out of the rooms on her floor, hurling it towards the man but sending it even further past him as she recited another spell. Ezeerf ti otni a llaw! Don’t think you can get away that easily you little s**t…” She spat. On command, the water that had amassed in front of the thief expanded into a thick wall of ice, blocking the only way out of the floor on the wing. But that did little to slow the thief, who merely stopped to admire the wall for a moment before slipping into the nearest open office.

Slipping a butterfly knife from under her sleeve, Cheon flicked it open and threw it forward with as much force as her arm could muster, just as the thief made an abrupt turn into the office. n** mih nwod… ********> The knife, now imbued with her magic, curved in its path as it sped towards the thief. But as Cheon made it to the doorway, a loud smashing noise permeated through the top floor of the building. Rushing into the office, Cheon watched as the thief plunged ten floors downwards with the butterfly knife lodged in his shoulder. Yet before he made a fatal landing the thief made a gesture with his hand that seemed to decelerate his fall until, at the level of the ground, he was on two feet safe and sound. Ripping the knife from his shoulder, the thief tossed it aside as he continued to run across the campus courtyard, shoving past students as he tried to get away. Before she could even clear her mind to piece a plan together, Cheon took a leap out the window, hands at her side as she channeled more energy into her body. Etativel em! You’re not getting away with this…! Ekahs eht draytruoc!”

As she dove downwards, Cheon channeled her magic into the ground, causing a micro earthquake that – without any regard for the safety of the students and staff on campus – seemed to literally rip the earth apart, sending the crowds into utter panic. Sirens began to blare, but they could barely be heard over the screams from the people as everyone scattered from the scene, trying their best to keep balance and stay away from the fissures, cracks, and holes that were sporadically being formed with every pulsation of the ground. Tunnel vision in full, Cheon flew through the crowds, deftly dodging people as she tracked the thief down. She was seeing red by now. Toor mih nwod With her fingers pointed at the trees, Cheon watched with a smug grin as the roots extended from the cracks she’d formed with her quake, shooting up as it wrapped around the purse thief. ”Give me my purse back, a*****e...” Cheon demanded, completely belligerent as she stormed up to the now tightly-bound thief. ”… or I’ll call the cops on you and have you thrown behind bars for the rest of your pathetic life. Don’t think I won’t do it!” She all but screamed, completely unaware of the damage that she had caused in her pursuit of him.

With: Cheon Location: Campus Courtyard OOC: Blah, I'm in exam season so forgive the quality.

The low purr of the car’s engine worked at what remained of Kelli’s alertness. It was early – much too early, yet the upcoming meeting would be his third of the day. From political roundups, to sessions with the media, to now being a guest speaker at a lecture hall, Aquaman was as much about an image as it was about civics. It had been a full five years since Kelli made his debut yet the day-to-day hadn’t changed the slightest. Disgruntled at the thought, the King of Atlantis rocked his head back onto the leather seat and exhaled a scoff. His eyes sought hard for something to be curious of outside the backseat windows but he ultimately sat defeated. Greenery, students, and more students. Some young, some old. But all of them unaccomplished and therefore boring to the King.

In time, a woman’s voice from the front of the car broke the simmering silence, ”We’ll be there soon, Your Majesty.” His driver’s voice was short and shrill, and very much reflected her matter-of-fact character.

”Kelli,” the King corrected her for the umpteenth time. He hated the formalities but they came from everybody nonetheless. Palming his face with his large hands, Kelli tried to recall the topic of his lecture. Was it Atlantean engineering or architecture? The vapidity of them both did little to hold his attention. ”Ugh, whatever…” he groaned in fatigue as the car rolled to a stop. He was sure the “Q-and-A’s” would take up a majority of the allotted time anyways. From experience, Kelli could vouch that people never cared about the details or the dry material. They just wanted a sneak peak at Atlantis’s behind-the-scenes and a little reciprocal attention from the King.

Throwing the door open, the Atlantean pulled himself out of the vehicle as quickly as he could. He stretched his limbs out as far as they could go and made a quirky face of satisfaction. ”Finally!” he exclaimed sharply at the newfound comfort. He could never understand how humans sat in those steel boxes for hours a day. To him it was mentally maddening. Regardless of his sheer size, Kelli couldn’t imagine himself opting for constriction in order for travel every day. Rocking back on his heels, the King faintly waved off his driver for what he’d hope to be the last time today. If he recalled right, this visit to the University of California would be his last meeting on the surface for the day. After that, he’d be free to return to his duties in Atlantis. ”Fun times.”

However, Kelli’s intention to enter the lecture hall quickly dissipated within moments of watching his driver leave. Not a minute had passed but Kelli would find himself bounding with full stride in the opposite direction. Something had happened. Screams were erupting, sirens were blaring, and the ground shook with a violence that roared with unnaturalness. With each pump of his arms and legs, Kelli came upon the commotion in a timely fashion. As he neared the source, the King had to slow his pace and navigate deliberately through the waves of bodies pushing for safety in the opposite direction. ”Get out the way!” his baritone voice rocked the chaotic air, catching the attention of most but not all. In its pure state, panic was hard to control but his command and presence was unyielding. A space parted for him towards the epicenter and Kelli would soon reach the end of his path.

Coming upon the clearing, the King only had seconds to make out the situation and find the culprit, but the face he identified took him aback. He fought hard against the mental shock that stole the girl’s name from his throat, wrestling to force it out. ”CH-CHEON!” he called loudly but his words fell on deaf ears. She was preoccupied, tunnelling on her target and unaware of the dangers she was creating for others and even herself. Cops were swiftly arriving on the scene and he could feel the crosshairs of their rifles tracing her movement as steadily as the quakes would allow. ”Stop, Cheon!” he called again but the results didn’t change. She was completely drawn in on the stranger and every inch she closed on him ripped at the earth even worse.

Before Kelli could gather his thoughts, his body had already moved. The words ”Take her out!” had him dashing towards Cheon, barely coming upon her in time to shield her body with his from the hail of lead. He held the girl tight to his chest for what seemed an eternity, waiting patiently for the firing to stop. The bullets drilled at his back but proved ineffective, ripping through his dress shirt but only nicking at his thick Super-Atlantean skin underneath.

Once the firing stopped, Kelli peered over his shoulder coldly at the officers. All their commands came hollering at the same time. All of them different iterations of “Hand her over!” and “Get out the way!”. ”Quiet!” Kelli commanded, his voice bellowing with powerful authority. With a swift motion, Kelli pulled off the golden pin fastened over his chest and, in a flash of golden light, transformed it into the iconic Trident of Neptune. With one arm wrapped tightly around his friend, the other slammed the bottom end of the Trident hard into the ground, forcing a silence upon the crowd of students and cops alike. To Kelli, it felt as if he was standing in defiance against the world, but his desire to protect his friend was impermeable. It was death or nothing, and he would readily tear through the waves of cops with his own Trident for her.

The silence encapsulated them and allowed Kelli to turn his attention back to the girl under his guard. She was steaming with focus, hardly responsive to his words. ”Cheon?” Kelli echoed her name again, giving her a small shake to steal her attention back to reality.

xxxEverything seemed to happen so quickly. There was barely any time for Cheon to register exactly what was happening until after the fact, when she landed with a thud wrapped in the arms of some stranger who… who seemed to know her name? Who was it? A classmate? A professor? The voice sounded vaguely strange… but almost as if she’d heard it before. As she felt a presence step into her field of view and a pair of arms wrap around her tightly, Cheon’s concentration broke, causing her spells to weaken dramatically. The rumbling dissipated first, and though the damage had been localized to a specific area within the courtyard itself so as not to affect the structures around campus, it seemed that the destruction was quite extensive. But instead of examining the damage, Cheon instinctively buried her face in the man’s chest at the sound of gunfire, shutting her eyes tightly as the wave of fear set in. When did the authorities show up? And why were they shooting?

When the gunfires stopped and the commands were shouted to hand her over, Cheon kept her face buried in the man’s chest. He heard her speak again, this time in defense of her, but it still didn’t register. All Cheon could feel was fatigue. ’Overexertion…’ She thought as her knees began to buckle. Holding onto the man’s shoulders for balance, the sight of the tall blonde Atlantean slowly came into focus. He was looking right at her with familiar eyes but a face more mature than she could remember. ”That’s not… you’re…” Little by little, Cheon began to recognize the man that protected her from the bullets. It wasn’t just Aquaman… it wasn’t just the King of Atlantis. ”No… there’s no way.” In utter disbelief, Cheon raised her hands to her mouth and took several steps backwards. It was Kelli. Older, taller, with more defined features than she could last remember… but there was no mistaking it. Her adopted brother had risen from the dead, or so it seemed. ”I thought… I thought I recognized the voice. But you look so different… so b-”

With the girl’s magical influence over their surroundings weaning, the rooted thief broke free from his bindings fairly quickly. Purse still clutched to his chest, the man cackled as he raised his free arm into the air. Before Cheon could finish her sentence to Kelli, the booming magically-enhanced voice of her purse thief rattled in the air. Weak… utterly weak.” Bring the arm down in a slashing motion, the man hurled a dozen silvery-purple explosive magical bolts at the pair.

The King of Atlantis grimaced when he felt the girl’s weight shift towards him for support. After so many years apart, he still couldn’t swallow seeing her so uneasy. ”I know…” Kelli muttered in reply to her confusion. He took a moment to walk back up to her, pulling her close again into a hug. With her head tucked under the crevice of his chin Kelli let out a short sigh. It was admittedly shocking to see her again after so many years distanced from one another. Probably even more so for her since he never gave her any closure. Still it’d be a mistake for anyone to assume he missed her any less than the day he left. ”You’re shorter than I remember,” the King teased at her, interrupting her moment of sheer disbelief.

With his attention wholly locked on his adoptive sister, Kelli didn’t see the next attack coming. Before he knew it, a barrage of sharp pain struck him in the side and sent him skidding along the ground with Cheon still in his arms. He grunted with each bounce and tumble but kept the young sorceress protected as best he could. Once his body came to a full stop, the Atlantean released the girl slowly and stood himself up, facing the enemy at the top of his stance. Although the magical bolts didn’t cause any major damage, his oblique still throbbed with an uncomfortable soreness. His tattered shirt now brown, black, and red with burn and blood marks. ”Still getting into trouble, huh?” Kelli joked. He ripped the remains of the top off and discarded it to the ground. ”I know you’re not going to but maybe you should just stay out of this one, Cheon.”

Kelli’s eyes stayed clinched with the newfound enemy. His once warm demeanor now icy cold with a thirst for retribution. ”You never should have targeted her,” the King sneered. Giving the Trident a twirl, it glowed with the same transformative light as before but this time it took the form of a golden gladius. With the sword in hand, Kelli dashed forward, kicking up dust and dirt in his alarming speed. The broken ground crumbled further under his weight but the King had no concern for the courtyard now. Closing in on the stranger, Kelli took the precaution to disguise his intended direction of attack. He faked a step towards the left to throw off the thief before quickly changing directions to the right. In a final movement, the King leapt into a powerful lunge at the enemy. The gold of his sword flashed and gleamed as it was thrust with Kelli’s full weight behind it.

xxxShooting Kelli a pouty glare at his comment about her height, Cheon kept her head pressed against his chest as she savoured the moment for as long as she could. With a mix of emotions ranging from complete and utter joy to total confusion and a little deep-seated anger, Cheon could barely contain herself and was about to retort to his comments when, out in the periphery of her view, she noticed the oncoming magical attack. B then it was too late – the spell bolts were traveling at too fast of a speed for her to be able to do anything. Barely able to even mutter a warning, Cheon let out a soft noise before the spell collided with Kelli, sending the both of them down to the ground. When they’d come to a full stop and she was released from his arms, Cheon propped herself up and brushed the hair out of her face. ”You’re bleeding...” But he didn’t seem to notice the girl’s words. Cheon watched as Kelli threw his tattered shirt on the ground. She felt a pang of nostalgia hit her – it was just like old times… but different. Yet despite the years they were apart, it didn’t feel that way at all.

”Like hell I’d let you have all the fun…” She retorted. Cheon picked herself up, patting the dirt from her coat before popping her knuckles. At his charge, Cheon brought herself up into the air. Gathering mystical energy at the tips of her finger, Cheon levitated Kelli’s tattered shirt. Sgar ot epor, dnib mih!” With a wave of her hand, Cheon sent the shirt forward, and with a puff of smoke she had turned it into a thick white rope that snaked its way around their target’s body, hoping that would make it easier for Kelli to land his hit.

The shadowy thief watched with glowing red eyes. ”Slow…” Commenting on the King’s attack, the magician raised both of his arms, sending him back and up into the air to narrowly dodge Kelli’s lunge. Despite the criticism, it seemed the cut had connected enough to shred a piece of his robe off. With a clap of his hands, the rope that Cheon attempted to bind him with was turned back into a shirt, and his body itself broke apart into a flock of doves that scattered high into the air. His energy signatures disappearing just as quickly as they had appeared.

Landing on her feet, Cheon wobbled slightly as she felt her knees give in once again. The fatigue was kicking in even harder, now that she pushed herself even more. ”I… think he got away. What the hell…”

Withstanding the direct attack to his side wasn’t a small feat for Kelli but he nonetheless fell back on his Atlantean training – never show that you’re in pain. Although most physical attacks were easily endured, magic was a whole different story. How the injury looked on the surface never reflected the damage it caused and he knew that Cheon would understand that to the highest degree. Still, Kelli remained adamant and tenacious in showing grit. ”I should’ve seen it coming myself,” Kelli replied through a forced laugh. ”I’ll be okay though.”

The blonde Atlantean smirked to himself in hearing Cheon rise to the challenge. It was fully expected of his old friend. She was as much of a fighter as he was, if not more so. Getting her to take the backseat would be worse than pulling teeth. There’d be a struggle until the end with her. The incantations she casted instantly wrought the King into a feeling of nostalgia. For years, he wasn’t sure if he’d ever hear her backwards vocals again. ”Just like old times, huh?” he asked aloud but unsure whether or not she could even hear it.

When his attack missed, Kelli instantly found himself being propelled backwards into the air by an untouchable force. Tucking his knees into his chest, the Atlantean allowed the momentum to carry him into a full somersault. Upon coming towards contact with the ground, Kelli stuck his landing as hard as possible to gather himself for the next assault. His hand clutched the hilt of his sword tightly but found no enemy to strike at. The stranger, as quick as he came into Kelli’s life, had vanished before they knew it. ”Tch,” the King scoffed in both frustration and disappointment.

Turning back to face his companion, Kelli’s weapon phased itself back down to a pin-sized trident. He quickly pocketed the artifact before giving a shrug at Cheon. The sight of her struggling to maintain her balance had the Atlantean reactively reach forward to uphold her by the arm until she could gather herself again. ”Why was he after you?” the blonde asked curiously. Still harbouring disbelief that fate had them cross paths again, Kelli snickered to himself. ”And more importantly, why are you at this campus?” Of all places the King of Atlantis expected to see his adoptive sister again, never would he have assumed the University of California. She was wealthy beyond compare and had all the resources to attend whichever Ivy League school she wanted. Plus he always had it pegged that Cheon was beyond intelligently adequate. Grades would never have been an issue for her.

Taking a quick scan around them, Kelli noted the returning crowd that had dispersed earlier. Cops were re-emerging along with several students and news teams. ”So much for P.R. maintenance,” he sighed.

xxxThe fight ended almost as quickly as it began. They lost. Cheon lost. With her vision fading in and out of focus, the girl took two dangerously unbalanced steps forward before taking Kelli’s arm. ”I’m fine…” She muttered under her breath. It was a lie. Cheon was tired… magic at that level was too much for her. As she clung onto Kelli’s arm, Cheon stabilized herself before turning her focus to the crowds around them. Their little display didn’t seem to go unnoticed, and with the cops and news teams also filing in, the woman couldn’t help but to feel a little claustrophobic. Taking her brother’s hand, Cheon cleared her throat as she channeled what little energy she had into her next spell. Ekat us ot ym eciffo.” At her command, smoke began to rise from the ground, spiralling around her and Aquaman before blowing off into the air, leaving just the damage the fight had caused behind them. When the smoke in front of Cheon’s face had finally cleared, the familiar sight of her office had come into full view.

With one last sigh, Cheon took to her office chair, sinking into the seat as she slowly began to massage her temples. ”To answer your question…. I don’t know. I don’t know why that person… thing… targeted me.” She began, clearly frustrated. ”I don’t know what it wanted with my bag, either… but now I’ve lost everything.” Frowning, Cheon leaned her head against the chair, looking up onto the ceiling as she let the moment sink in. ”But more importantly… where the hell have you been? You’re not honestly going to tell me that after all these years you decided to come back into my life as Aquaman… are you??” She said, suddenly shifting the conversation as she turned to look at her brother. ”Mom and dad said that you died, Kelli… You should be dead right now.”

With a mix of conflicting emotions, Cheon was evidently struggling to keep calm – she was glad that Kelli had survived after all these years, there was no doubt about that… but she was angry as well. Angry that he had neglected to tell her that, for one. Angry that her parents had lied to her about something so significant, angry that she was so careless as to let her purse get stolen, angry that this whole thing happened, confused about the situation, tired from all the fighting, and just exhausted in general. ”I just… I can’t believe… You’re here, I’m here, but this whole situation is so not right. Even if I was to imagine that you had survived and that we would have seen each other again, I wouldn’t have thought it would happen like this.”

Pulling her desk drawer open, Cheon pulled out a bottle of what looked like white powdery pills. She shook two pills into her hand, popping them into her mouth before leaning into her chair again with a deep sigh. Setting the pill container down (labelled Caffeine Pills, 200mg), Cheon turned to Kelli again. ”My old teacher used to tell me to take these whenever I got too tired from using magic.” She explained. ”… and, I’m sorry about what happened out there, the media is probably blasting you out there right now…”

Cheon’s words did little to ease the Atlantean. While she said one thing to him, her body said another and it made the King scowl in concern. He wouldn’t dispute it though because he was certain she hated being patronized as much as he did. At the girl’s command, Kelli became consumed in a blanket of smoke. The event was admittedly alarming but the feeling of Cheon’s hand in his worked to comfort his mind. Within seconds, the view of police, students, and news teams had quickly been replaced with the scene of a university office.

Kelli followed his sister’s lead and unloaded himself onto the guest chair in front of her desk. While she explained to him the situation with the stranger, the blonde was busy shifting his body around to find a comfortable sitting position. ”What did he take from you that was possibly so important? I mean there had to be something,” Kelli asked, still fidgeting with the chair and growing more impatient with its small size. ”Look, you’re alive and you’re safe. Saying you’ve lost everything is an overstatement. We can get it whatever it is back together, I promise.” Giving up on the possibility of ever being content with the chair, the King simply sank low into it and propped his feet up on the corner of her desk. He accepted the position as the most comfortable he’d ever get.

When the interrogation that he expected finally came up, the King could only look at Cheon with guilty eyes and huff a sigh. He could tell that she was rightfully frustrated with him and there was really no excuse that he could conjure to save himself. ”I didn’t want to leave,” he began, his calm voice now slightly raised. ”When the Atlanteans saved me that day, they told me the truth about where I came from and who my parents really were… They showed me a home where I was actually wanted and dearly cared for.” Kelli turned his face away from her after comprehending what he had just said, that he chose them over her. That to her, it probably meant that she wasn’t enough.

He paused for a second to rethink his next few phrases but ultimately decided to let the real feelings flow. Cheon deserved the truth from him and he was going to give it to her. She wasn’t another politician or journalist trying to critically analyze every word he uttered. She was his oldest friend, and the first person who’s ever shown him compassion. ”For once I wasn’t just an instrument for someone else’s happiness. I wasn’t just a puppy that was adopted to mend a broken heart. They wanted me for more than that and they treated me with so, so much love.”

Kelli stopped explaining himself when the girl started rummaging through her drawers for a bottle of pills. He popped his eyebrow at her in concern but was eventually relieved to find out it was only caffeine. He wheezed a sigh of content before sitting up and forward, leaning closer to her from across the table. ”Cheon, I love you a lot and you know that. I wouldn’t have left if it wasn’t important. But trust me, I never stopped missing you since that day.” Kelli’s sea green eyes stayed locked with hers for several moments. He was insistent on making it known how much she meant to him, refusing to let go of her again like he did years ago.

”It’s okay, I can always fix the media. What’s more important is finding out more about that thief,” Kelli replied with a glowering face. He hated the thought that someone came so close to hurting her and was still breathing. Punishment by impalement was sorely overdue. ”Do you have any leads or ideas on how to find him? I’m sure by now you’ve studied some type of spells to track him down.” he questioned curiously.

Cheon sighed, running a hand through her hair as she tried to recall the contents of her purse. There really wasn’t anything worth stealing… and for someone like the thief who seemed to be using magic, it was safe to assume that the flash drive wasn’t the first priority. ”The only things worth stealing in my purse were my wallet, my phone, my thesis…” She listed before taking a pause. ”… and the key that I got in the mail a while ago. I don’t know what it does, but I think I was supposed to keep it safe.” She told Kelli. ”But I don’t see why a Homo magi of his calibre would want any of those things…”

Cheon could see how torn up Kelli had been after disappearing for so long without being able to contact her. Reaching across her desk, Cheon rested a hand on Kelli’s shoulder, giving it a tight squeeze as she smiled. ”Hey, I get it… what matters now is that you’re here. You’re safe, you’re alive, and you’re with me.” She told him. ”It doesn’t matter how long we’ve been apart. You’re still family, and you’re the only brother I’ve ever trusted. Nothing will ever change that, and no one can ever take that away from you.”

Rising from her chair, Cheon took to her bookshelves, running her finger along the spines of the books that lined it before stopping at a very thin, black leather book that she pulled out. ”I know it might not be much, but before my teacher died she gave me a list with names and phone numbers that I could call if I ever had any problems… maybe we could start the search from there?” She suggested, looking to Kelli for confirmation as she circled around her desk again to take a seat.

Cheon’s reassurance of their relationship had Kelli smiling warmly back at her. ”As long as we’re cool,” Kelli replied, his eyes trailing her motion to the bookshelf. He watched closely as she selected a distinct black book out of several others. ”That’s new,” the blonde commented. Fully aware of the years of experiences the two lived away from each other, the black book and its origin were a mystery to the King.

”After this is all over, I think we need to play catch up,” Kelli joked, giving a nod of affirmation to Cheon’s idea. He rose from his seat as the girl sat back down in hers and made his way over to the window that overlooked the campus. Leaning against the panes, the tall Atlantean folded his arms across his chest. He focused at the crowds of people dispersed into random groupings around the court yard and figured it wouldn’t be much longer until Cheon’s name was given up to the police.

”We should go,” Kelli advised to his sister. While he was adamant on defending Cheon from the public, he was sure that the state of California wasn’t going to go easy in round two once they’ve been found. More importantly, Kelli was also concerned about the happenings in Atlantis once media coverage had gone out about the fight. They had already shot at him once. A second time would be the spark of war talk within Atlantis.

Flipping through the pages, Cheon stopped near the middle on a page that, as if written in thick black sharpie, had the words ‘Hellblazer Detective’ scrawled across it, followed by a phone number and an address. Examining the page a little closer, Cheon turned to Kelli. ”I think I’ve heard Oana say something about this before. Maybe we could try here first?” She asked as she shifted her gaze from Kelli to the window and the courtyard beyond – while it seemed like the crowds have all but disappeared, the police had already cordoned off the area and the news crews were still surrounding the campus. ’What a mess… Look at the s**t you’ve caused, Cheon.’ Pursing her lips into a thin line, Cheon abruptly turned away from the window. ”Yeah… we need to catch up, and I think we need some drinks.” She added.

”I know that there’s some service tunnels that connect all the buildings together, we can take those and get out of here without being bombarded by the media?” Cheon suggested, reaching for her coat as she threw it over her shoulder. ”Oh… but first, lets get you more… presentable?” Eyeing Kelli up and down, Cheon proceeded to raise her hands to Kelli’s side. Laeh sih seirujni… She recited first – a simple healing spell that would take care of the injuries he’d sustained from the scuffle earlier. … dna evig eht nam emos sehtolc. With the second spell, another cloud of gas seemed to spring from her palms, circling around Kelli as it restored the shirt that he’d lost in battle.

”Okay, follow me.” Motioning for Kelli to follow, Cheon led her brother to the stairwell and down into the tunnels where, with a little magical persuasion, she was able to pop into and navigate through.

"You know, I've never really forgotten the time I gained these powers, of the carnage that had caused all this, and all that's occurred afterwards. It's quite mind boggling."

Alegar sat silently as a few students walked past him, his gaze overlooking all of them before it shifted to the book in his hand, the current book designated by the college for the kids. 'Good read, but there's too many things that aim for bias towards one group to be a proper thing to read through. Going to have to send a complaint about this later...' Alegar thought as he looked back up at the kids, soon feeling a tug in his mind as he picked the book up. 'Gaius, what is it?'

'I'm wondering what you're planning at the moment, my lord.' came Gaius' voice in his mind, Alegar's gaze going over the students again as they finally seemed to finish pouring in. 'We've been doing nothing after you stated quite clearly that we would be testing the new heroes. This doesn't help with the fact that only a few have appeared.'

'Patience is a virtue, Gaius, that's something that you should have with that honor of yours.' Alegar responded as he walked to a nearby bench, soon sitting down as he took a mental note of what he'd have to work on fixing in the book. 'However, it should be obvious that the heroes themselves won't pop up without proper incentive, so it's better to place some incentives to draw them out.'

'You mean that you're asking me to do something for this?' Gaius asked, making Alegar smirk as he opened the book to the page he left off on it. Then, he placed his free hand into one of his pockets, pulling out a small black stone as he began twirling it around in his hand. 'Does this mean that you have something planned after all?'

'That will be decided afterwards, but for now I'd like you to head through the major cities that the old heroes once resided in.' Alegar thought, his gaze trailing through the page as he kept his mind on the moment. 'After you find any heroes within the area, be sure to inform me. I'll try to conduct a proper plan to test them from there.'

'Very well, my lord.' Gaius' voice uttered, Alegar imagining the man bowing to him before the communication ended, returning the tug to a small bump in his mind. He then sighed as he tossed the gem up in the air, watching it as it rose up before falling back down into his hand. Seven centuries, and he never thought he'd be doing something like this. Normally he wouldn't, either, but the fact still stood; without the proper preparation, and without the proper resolve to fight with their all, they wouldn't be able to progress as fast as they needed to. So, with a sigh, Alegar put his gaze back on his book, the same instance placing the gem back in his pocket as he returned to his other priority; finding a proper teaching method with this thing.

"However, if I was given the chance to do it all over, with keen knowledge as to what would occur, I'd probably do it again in order to see history play out in front of me, to see humanity at both it's brightest and darkest moments all over again..."

Sighing, Alegar put his left hand into his pocket, closing the book as he pulled out a silver pocket watch. 'Looks like it should be an hour before my flight to Central, which shouldn't be too crowded at this time of the day...' Alegar thought as he looked down at the time, soon focusing on his connection to Gaius. 'Gaius, hop off the search momentarily. My flight is about to head out, and the last thing I need is someone wondering how I got there without getting on the plane in the first place.'

'Understood, sir, though you should head there regardless.' Gaius responded, causing Alegar's brow to furrow as he got up, putting the watch up in his pocket. 'The flight you're thinking of actually took off yesterday, and I did stay there then. However, I've already placed the book with your notes on the lessons on the desk.'

'So I forgot the actual time...' Alegar responded as he walked out of the area, his steps moving him into one of the small alleyways that students normally saw him take, as it was one of the quicker shortcuts to the closest hallway to his classroom. 'Thank you for warning me beforehand, Gaius. Continue to search through things.'

'As you command.' Gaius responded, a slight hint of amusement in his voice as the connection faded, making Alegar sigh as darkness circled around him. He felt no eyes looking over him, nor did he see any, so there wasn't anyone here. Along with this, the alley was the only one without a camera, so they couldn't catch anything that happened within it. Alegar then chuckled as he raised his free hand, setting the book to his side as his eyes held a faint yellow glow.

"Well, time to see the best way to teach the past." Alegar spoke, his tongue now in old Lithuanian as he faded into darkness, his mind setting itself on the area in his room.
