Travelling across Jauhar with a wagon was… a special kind of chore, that was for certain. It must have been impossible in the past, before the Obans had started trading this way. These days there were trails and wheel-ruts snaking through the jungle, but the ground was hardly even and the going was tough. Tamim and Aakil were sweaty under their thick coats, and when they breathed out he could see the hot mist swirl in front of their noses.
Eventually he found a small clearing to pull off the trail. He was hungry, so he figured he’d try to cook up some of the meat in his stores. He hadn’t actually cooked a lot of meat when he lived in Sulburi -- it was more expensive than the basics, and he had been saving up. He’s splurged a bit with the excitement of getting the brewery job. Well, it couldn’t be all that complicated, could it? He started a small cooking fire to the side of the wagon, then cut the meat into smaller chunks. He pierced this with a metal cooking-skewer to make a kabob. He’d seen meat cooked like this in the marketplaces. It seemed straightforward enough.
He dug the far end of the skewer into the ground so that the meat was over the fire. Soon after, there was the pleasant sound of sizzling and a rather nice smell. But the fire was small, and it was taking a while… so he left the meat on the skewer and went to check over his supplies, adjusting barrels that had shifted on the bumpy Jauhar trail. One thing lead to another, and before he knew it…
“Damn it.” He hissed, hopping off the wagon and scrambling over to the fire. Of course -- there was his meat, burned to a crisp! He rolled his eyes, letting out an exasperated sigh. Served him right for being that careless! He really shouldn’t assume things were easy until he completed them successfully a couple of times.
