"I know HP," Sam reiterated over the campfire they had made, gnawing at the fish dispassionately. She had never been a seafood fan, and even possible starvation otherwise did little to convince her stomach it wasn't nasty. "Those are Health Points. Would Stamina and Constitution be the same? Dex is obviously Dexterity, then Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma...I suppose D&D has covered the basics?"

ring around

The Ring of Truth fascinated her, and it was too hot to go out. So while they sat in the cove, Sam held it out for Kammy to either take. "I prefer one on one sessions," she said as a matter of factly. "No need to discuss personal preferences in front of absolute strangers."

Which Kammy wasn't any more, she was beginning to realize. It was odd to call someone a friend after enduring two monsters, but...acquaintances were a start. Sam wasn't very good at maintaining friendships for a variety of reasons, the least of which was her apparent lack of empathy. She wanted to force Kammy to tell only the truth to facilitate this bonding process.

"Yeah, pretty much. You have all these stats and variables you use to flesh out a character, then you make up scenarios and play with everyone, use dice to see if things work or not. It's really fun." Kammy had already finished her food. Her tolerance for bad tasting food had risen to high levels, since one didn't get to eat good food during the apocalypse. Plus the fish was freshly cooked, and seafood didn't taste bad to her anyway.

While Sam was very much into the whole ring thing, Kammy was not. She was reserved by nature, and it took a lot for her to warm up to anyone let alone reveal personal secrets. Sam was high on her list of good people. If this were a friendship sim they would have scored a few points already. But to call Sam a good friend was, well, still a bit much.

She looked at the ring with hesitation. It was obvious she was not keen on the idea, having been at the huge campfire where everything had went to s**t in her opinion. "Y-yeah."

Her perception of the other death trainee was a no nonsense person who took things seriously, was all about acquiring information and might have more in common with a robot then a human being. But she had been nice, If not a little out there for riding on a giant titan.

But hey, friends were hard to find, it wasn't like Kammy could call herself sane . Getting information was fun too, just that her methods of it were probably different to Sam's

She took the ring, slipping it through her finger. For now she didn't feel any different. "Ok I'll play along, but please don't ask me about who I want to bang. I have like zero constitution points for that sort of thing."

"But why is everything set to chance?" Sam frowned over her fish. "You're telling me this game has scenarios where the character with the strongest Strength stat won't necessarily be the strongest roll in the party? That makes no sense. If I build a character a certain way, I expect to be able to take full advantage of it."

Sam frowned. "Why would I care about your sexual preferences?" She waved a hand as if to dismiss the thought. "That drama at the campfire was completely unnecessary and pointless to boot. All I'm curious about is what you want to bring to this militia. I myself, for instance, have a vast knowledge of zoology, a determined mind for queries, and a handle on deductive reasoning."

"Because it makes it more interesting and fair." Kammy explained. "If you had no dice you'll always know the outcome of a move or a scenario. Auto hits, max damage, everything would be easy, it wouldn't be any fun. Then you'd have people making the same builds so fights and battles end in draws cause everyone knows what the other can do and wont be surprised."

"Zoology?" Kammy sounded impressed. "Sounds cool. pretty good skill set, Could help with identifying some of the weird stuff thrown our way."

"As for my skills I'm good with tech. Building it, using it, hacking it. That stuffs my jam. Bypassing security's fun, trying to find out all the good stuff. Haven't found anything super secret about Deus yet. Dunno if I wanna look any further though pass the intranet. Getting caught looking at files you shouldn't would be bad."

"I'm starting to wonder if it will." It wasn't exactly normal things that they were up against. Sam wondered if she could make parallels at best. Fear was something her studies didn't prepare her for.

No, Kammy's skill set sounded far more useful at the moment. A pleasant acquaintance to boot. For someone who didn't socialize well to begin with, Sam had found a jackpot of a person. Well, assuming they got off the island.

"I wouldn't try," Sam advised, though her eyes were lit with curiosity. "Look what they did to us without provocation. Does that mean you're in one of the information divisions? Life or Death?"

"Set stats wouldn't necessarily have to determine the outcome," Sam argued, though she saw Kammy's point. "Isn't D&D about working with your 'party'? Tactics need to be just as thought out as character builds. There are three basic builds, yes? A 'tank,' which takes damage and aggravates enemies; a 'damage per second,' who attacks; and a 'healer,' who of course heals. When boiled down to those basic concepts, clearly the game is expecting you to work together as a team to overcome obstacles."

"Sure it will. Just because they're magical doesn't mean they don't act in certain ways. Have strengths, weaknesses, behavioral patterns. You'll find it easier to study and understand why they do things. Then you can predict what they'll do next. Like a beast tamer"

So far Sam hadn't been asking her questions, so she felt no compulsion to answer them. As soon as she asked her what division she was in, Kammy answered without thinking. "Death." It was weird. Nothing felt odd or compelled, she just said it. Thankfully it was something she had no inclination of hiding.

She could understand Sam's reasoning, but her own reasoning made much more sense. "It is, but even with tactics your character can only do so much. And you have those three archetypes yeah, but you can combine elements of each class. Make a tank who can heal, or a DPS who can take a few hits. Theres also the type of weapons you use, are we talking long range or short range. Spells, attributes, morality, and so on. More importantly you have the dungeon master who runs the whole thing. They control the setting, the NPC's, and determine the outcomes. Dice helps to keep everything level and make sense."

Sam mused over her answer. "I suppose," she relented after a moment. "But I would think some of those details are assumed: what good is a DPS that can't take a hit if he is in melee? On the other hand, why would a tank consider healing spells?"

Beat.

"Unless you mean healing via items? You haven't gone over all the rules for those yet, but I assume that there's risk with that as well, or at the very least an item has to be used on the user's turn rather than the giver's. Either way, that's using an action to support when a tank's duty is to be a damage soaker."

She stopped suddenly and then gave Kammy an even more curious look.

"What morality system?"

"Yes, but basic observational skills are not only found in the collegiate system. Though one certainly needs them and will find many who lack them," Sam added, almost dryly. "I'm sure other hunters above us have more than adequate scouting abilities simply by working here. Still."

There was a hint of a smile, in so far as Sam was able to emote thus far.

"I'm happy to hear we share a division, Kammy. If you would, this could be the start of a partnership. Your technological savvy, my analyzation skills. We could easily get the information we want with time."

But she hadn't asked a question. Right. What did one ask exactly after you found out the division, general personality, and skills of an individual...?

"It's fair to ask why you chose to came here. Or if you'd rather, what you think a recruiter saw in you?"

"Well if he can't take a hit, thats what your tank is there for. And the DPS might have high speed, so he doesn't need to worry about defense. Take out the enemy before he knows what hit him, like a assassin. And a tank could heal others if they got hit. Like a...holy paladin. I think thats a thing..."

A pause. "Well it really depends on the item. You have equipment, like swords and shields, and mischievous items like medical kits and candles. Stuff that you can find during the game. But you are right, you use items on your turn."

And now it was on to morality. "Oh, theres a moral system in the game to determine what sort of personality your character has. You have the usual good, neutral, evil ones, then you have another part which is the ethical axis, which is lawful, neutral, chaotic. Describes weather you go by the law, or you do things your own way. This helps determine if you'll get along with other characters. Have you heard phrases like chaotic good and lawful evil? Thats where they come from."
