As far as recommendations go, "Black Sessions" might be an alternative as it's sort of a 'best of' album up until Viva Emptiness and because Sulfur and Teargas are awesome tracks.
Edit: s**t, I was editing recommendations and lost my post. DX

Ah yeah, I forgot all about Black Sessions. I noticed that about The Great Cold Distance, too and how it seemed almost like a sequel to Viva Emptiness.
The album song structure almost annoys me since I can't help but think of Earshot and how they always had their best song first and then tried to make copies of it through the album, but it works for Katatonia pretty well. I thought it was extremely noticable in 'Tonight's Decision', which basically had one good song at the beginning and then just sucked for the remainder. Vocals sounded horrible and as if the singer had just woke up to a hangover after a crazy night with that parabola creature from Alien Purgatory. Did he get booted or is it still the same guy?
'Consternation' seems to be the worst song on the new album, purely because it sounds like something cut off of Korn's 'Take a Look into the Mirror' album :/

Yeah, Discouraged Ones is interesting because you can actually notice the shift from the intensity of Brave Murder Day into what will become Viva Emptiness.

Alright, I've only heard Viva Emptiness because I bought it on one of my many odd shopping moods, but it was some of the most kick a** 'gloom' metal I've heard--is that the genre? I'm still a newb at those--I fell in love with Omerta, and well, the rest of the album. It's genius.
I'll be checking into Brave Murder Dayand the Great Cold Distance when I get payed next. <3

I'd say Viva Emptiness is somewhere in the vein of rock, but their early stuff are along those lines. I never bothered to learn metal subgenres haha
I can't get over how good Great Cold Distance is. I've been listening to it almost entirely for the past week, and it's just as amazing with every listen. Something you'll dig if you liked Viva Emptiness. I gotta go buy the cd when it finally releases over here

a lot of their previous albums seem to be 1/3-1/2 filler for me.
the great cold distance is making me like them, though. [:

I've learned not to give any attention to the lyrics because they completely suck on an overwhelming 90% of the time. I honestly can't believe how much Jonas has improved, but it's about time considering that across a three album span, he absolutely sucked and sounded half awake during the entire recording.

Haha, heard the b-sides for The Great Cold Distance album.
Remixes are surprisingly decent. My Twin (Opium Dub) almost sounds like My Twin and some random porno music got mixed together, though.
"Code Against the Code", "Displaced", and "Dissolving Bonds" are kinda eh and definently easy to see why they were cut from the final version of the album. Also have some of the worst Katatonia lyrics ever ahah

wealth soil's song(?) deadhouse exclaim criminals teargas ghost of the sun july my twin murder
PRETTY AMAZING.
ps. if katatonia is coming to your area then ******** go. it's been a great while since they toured the US and who knows when they'll come around again.

Every Katatonia song sounds the same to me. I've become pretty bored with their s**t.
