Happy week everyone!
New discussion topic! Have you ever entered runway?
- Do you did it often? Or rarely?
- Are there some themes you feel very strong with?
- Some themes you feel are not your strength?
- Any suggestions for newbies?

I used to enter daily but have since kind of given up (I know). My Gaia dream was to win one once. So maybe. Anyways I still seek out advice and suggestions.
As always, looking forward to your responses! You can answer one or all of the questions or just post your thoughts~

This is Runway there are frequently no entry fee ones
This is Avatar Arena there aren't as stringent themes, you can write a story but the prizes are less
They are separate things.

Runway wasn't around when I first joine4d Gaia, or it was drastically different. Anyways, I don't really enter big contests. Sometimes I enter small ones, but I don't bother with big ones, especially if you have to pay in like Runway.

Sometimes I enter small ones, but I don't bother with big ones, especially if you have to pay in like Runway. I get that. They frequently have free ones (no entry fee) those are the ones I enter.

Semi-often, I guess? Like, once a month-ish.

Personally, originals. Cosplay is cool and all, and I did do some, but I preferred making originals and creating backstories for them.
gaia_sakura Some themes you feel are not your strength?
Never thought of themes in the idea of strengths and weaknesses, only as preferrences. But, I guess you could say any "theme" not of my preference could be a weakness. I'm not as comfortable with the "toxic" greens, b/c they make my eyes feel wonky. Otherwise, can't really say cat_sweatdrop

Find a preference: Original or Cosplay. Figure out which you are more comfortable with making avi's of before entering. If you aren't at ease with making an avi for a specific category, you avi may very well fall flat. With cosplay, you don't have to be exact, but you will get some critics that will vote you down simply because you "altered" the character you were cosplaying in a way they don't like.
You will get critiqued - and some people will do it in a not-so-helpful way (I.E. "Your avi looks stupid"). Be ready for haters.
I personally think starting with a couple "originals" is the best way to get a foot in the door and figure out what it's all about. Easier to brush off a "it's stupid" comment on something you personally created, because unlike cosplay, originals are YOURS, and if you loved your creation what they say is just them not liking it.
Don't think "themes" etc necessarily when creating an "original", just go with the flow. And remember me saying up there about how I love creating backstories? Not required. Not everyone is good with story creation, and if you aren't comfortable with it, it won't go over as well.

I was thinking more avatar arena than runway, sorry... though the tips should be able to be applied to runway as well to a degree.
I entered Avatar Arena ALOT back when I first started on this site, did both Cosplay and Originals (though mostly original). That was on my original account, Aidylasia

Ah alrighty! I was wondering as themes are imperative in runway but not in arena. I have just started entering arena again. They still haven't updated the prizes but it fun to get comments. Ah nice! reminds me of my account early on.

I can't do clutter avatars or super simple modern ones.
- Any suggestions for newbies?
Get used to working with avatars. Ghost, do the color mixing challenge, or join other challenges. This way you will be more familiar with what is available. Once you feel confident in your skills go for it!
