Along the Summerset Coastline of Aragon, there once was an area of ancient stone ruins and winding caverns at the edge of the sea. When a group of Sirens found this location, they were awed by the beautiful stonework of the ruins and the shimmering gems within the caverns. They chose to make this oceanside place their home, naming their village Acquaris. The Sirens have resided in Acquaris for many years, where they took preference in shifting into the forms of Merfolk. In more recent times, a flood struck the village, submerging more than half of it underwater... Although to the delight of the Sirens, the majority of them simply shifted into their Merfolk forms and chose to reside beneath the waves.
Acquaris was vast in resources, for many of the precious gemstones could be found within the submerged underwater caverns beneath the flooded village. The Sirens of Acquaris had always valued the arts and were known artisans, using the shimmering beauty of the gemstones to decorate their underwater homes or to craft intricate jewelry that adorned their serpentine tails and bodies. For in their culture, it was customary that all that was worn was the finery of gemstones blended with natural elements such as kelp leaves gilded in gold. The true location of Acquaris was kept secret, for those who saw what remained of the location simply dismissed it as an uninhabited location, due to the ruins and the majority of it being underwater. However, legends of the Sirens of Acquaris and their rare gemstones began to spread through the land. The mysterious village was sought after by many, however no one could ever find it's true location that lay submerged beneath a flooded ocean inlet. More than that, it was the absolute law of the Sirens of Acquaris and their people to never reveal the location of their home.
Syrena was the daughter of the current village leader, Althera. In her home, one of the largest underwater structures, she was raised in customary fashion to their traditions with an emphasis on crafting with gemstones and the arts of both song and dance. When it came to song and dance, this was something that Syrena excelled in. As the years passed, she had always taken a great joy in entertaining with music for her people and bringing them joy through her performances.
Although she loved her seaside home and always felt deeply connected to the ocean, there was still a part of Syrena with an insatiable curiosity to experience more on land. As Sirens, some of her people did venture inland occasionally, able to change their appearances to match that of the humans. Mostly for them, this purpose was only to keep an eye on the land dwellers to ensure that the secret location of their home always remained protected.
Syrena began infrequent and unaccompanied trips to land herself on her own accord, where she taught herself to balance and become swift on two legs instead of just fins. Every now and then, she would venture into candlelit taverns, using her newly acquired skills blended with her natural Siren talents to preform for merchants or sailors through the art of song and dance. This was something Syrena enjoyed greatly and she always made sure to keep her Siren heritage a secret from them. Additionally, during her time spent back in Acquaris, the warriors among her people spent years training her in the art of swordsmanship. This knowledge she combined with that gained on shore, making her skilled in weaponry.
Chapter II: The Fall of Acquaris
Syrena Thalassa had never dared to tell her mother of her journeys on land, for this source of joy was something she didn't want to lose. And her mother was always far too busy with her duties as the village leader and protector of their people to bother questioning her on her whereabouts. But it was these journeys that Syrena took, that would soon lead to their downfall.
Away from Acquaris, her performances had begun to gather fame, earning her several nicknames depending on where she preformed, from Enchantress of the Tides to Storm Songstress due to her affinity for preforming beneath thunder and rain. As her fame grew, so did the reputation of her performances. Eventually, it became difficult for her to keep her Siren heritage a secret as more and more people took notice of the enchanting quality in her voice and the otherworldly ethereal appearance of grace that cloaked her performances.
As she wrapped up a two week long traveling tour through some of the Kingdoms, little did Syrena know, a crew of high ranking merchants were tracking her every move, seeking knowledge of the legendary gem filled village of Acquaris. One of the Merchant's boats was able to follow her from the shore, undetected through the thick layer of fog that covered the coastline. They tracked her North, until they reached the flooded inlet that Acquaris lay submerged beneath.
The moment that Syrena descended below the water and the faintest shimmers of gold and gemstones could be faintly seen from the depths, the Merchants knew they had their location. The following day, a battalion of Merchant boats appeared in the bay to begin their strike on the coastal village. The blasts of cannons and aquatic bombs were launched from the ships. Armed with only their tridents and swords, there was little that the civilians of Acquaris could do to defend their village against the Merchants.
Many of the villagers perished from the explosives, and those that managed to survive were given orders to evacuate from the village Chief Althera. Syrena did her best to help her people with the evacuation, even losing her left eye in the process by one of the explosives during the attack. After the village had been cleared, the vast amount of their sacred gemstones and gold were hauled out from the depths of the water and distributed among the rich Merchants. With no other choice and the sea no longer safe, Syrena and her people were forced to venture further onto land.
Chapter III: Exile
The amount of disappointment and betrayal that her mother felt due to her daughter's actions was incomparable after the fall of Acquaris. The blame fell onto Syrena's shoulders, for it was her adventures far and wide across the land that led to the discovery of her people's home, something that had once been kept secret for hundreds of years.
Despite her outrage, Syrena's mother still wanted to spare her daughter from the punishment of execution, which left her with only one other option. Syrena was cast into exile, stripped of any title she held within her people, forbidden from speaking to them again, and sent fourth back onto land as an outcast. Before her exile took it's full effect, out of her deep guilt, Syrena made one last seemingly impossible promise to them... That she would try to gain back as many of their sacred gemstones that she could, so that they could start to rebuild what had been lost.
Syrena has not seen her people since that fateful day, though she hopes to one day be welcomed back to them if able to achieve her goal. She now either wears an eyepatch or uses her Siren shapeshifting magic to alter the appearance of her left eye, hiding the battle scars. Since then, Syrena has settled back into her life as a traveling entertainer across the Kingdoms. She has also adopted a habit and a skill set in thievery, now using whatever means necessary to achieve her goal of recovering her people's stolen resources, even if it means stealing.
