Chrysanthe was quickly adapting to life on the ocean. The sniper had taken a few days to get her sea legs but once she was stable the hybrid found it fairly easy to walk across the upper decks without falling to one side. Admittedly she had been wary of going on a voyage because of some smithy’s recommendation, but the thrill of adventure had called to her. It also helped that the Belrean family she was living with had given her a supportive shove out the door. You’re young. Go see the world! We’re here for you whenever you come back. Still, it was strange to be leaving Belrea. The continent had been a way to a new life for Chrysanthe who had struggled with her own history back in Tendaji and now she was leaving to explore the ocean. It truly was a strange twist and Chrysanthe found herself letting out a soft sigh as she leaned over the railing and studied the ocean. They were completely surrounded by water and had been sailing for over a week now, the longest she had ever been on water considering she had taken an airship to Belrea instead of sailing. Others would be terrified at the concept of being surrounded by so much water but Chrysanthe found herself enjoying the view. In the sunlight the crystal waters gleamed almost like a thousand diamonds, their sparkle bringing a beauty to the endless blue horizon.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Ephrym smirked as he noticed one of the new members of the crew watching the ocean. His friend had encouraged him to pick up the sniper since there were so many unknown factors about Kahikina and it would be better to have the extra manpower just in case of emergencies. Ephrym had a variety of people on his crew, including a Matori navigator, but he had not been expecting another foreigner with such strange traits. Not that they were that biased against hybrids, especially considering how many mixed families existed in Belrea, but it was still shocking to see a foreigner with such unique traits. It was a bit too easy to notice her and a lot of the crew had taken to calling Chrysanthe the golden princess or the golden spark who could shoot you within a few seconds if you dared to underestimate her. She was good at attacking though and had proven it to several of the more masculine members that she truly could hold her own as promised. Ephrym had been on the receiving end of a couple of her shots within the first few days until she had started to adapt to his more playful nature while he had learned to usually give her some space, admittedly something he was not accustomed to doing with many of his crew.

Chrysanthe nearly jumped before turning to face Ephrym. Even though they had moments together in Belrea before leaving on the voyage there was something different now that they were actually on sea and she was constantly watching him being ‘captain’ around the crew. “Ah.” She pursed her lips before giving a nod and glancing back across the ocean. “It is really beautiful.” She admitted as her golden gaze studied the sparkling waves. Living in the city had kept her away from the ocean and she hadn’t had many interactions with the great body of water until she visited Matori in search of her missing father. Even then she hadn’t gotten the chance to truly enjoy its beauty because of the hatred and the desperation she had been feeling at the time. “It’s a shame that it can be so dangerous.” She added as an afterthought, her gaze moving across the crystal surface to imagine all of the dangers lurking inside.

A soft chuckle left Ephrym’s lips as he cautiously moved forward to lean against the railing a couple of feet away from Chrysanthe. “It’s not the only thing that’s beautiful and dangerous out here.” He teased with a grin towards the hybrid. “Did you leave a trail of bodies before coming over to Belrea? That would explain your willingness to quickly join our crew.” Can’t really arrest anyone on open waters, right? Even if Chrysanthe was notorious for her short temper and feisty actions Ephrym always felt daring enough to try and push his limits with the woman. Not that he meant any harm by it, but it was nice to see some sort of emotion dancing across that delicate face instead of that constant melancholy expression. Even when faced with Telios back in Belrea she had kept her resolve which was impressive, but at the same time he didn’t like it when she was so reserved. Before she had snapped at him a few times, but since setting sail when they were constantly surrounded by crew she seemed much more reserved. It made him miss those moments alone like when they were dealing with merchants or even that day they went swimming together after a long week of negotiations.

“There were quite a few.” Quipped back Chrysanthe before shaking her head at Ephrym’s antics. “Dear captain, don’t you have things to do other than bothering a lone crew member?” She asked with a raised brow as she studied him. It was still strange to think that someone near her age was their captain. Someone so young had taken so much time to earn a ship and then gather a crew. He definitely was an ambitious man beneath all of those playful shenanigans, a perfect cover to hide how cunning he truly could be. Chrysanthe was more inclined to believe that someone else like Yokka or Emiyn had more power behind the scenes to direct all of the deals that had secured the Misty Maiden’s prosperity and journey into the new islands. But she had witnessed his actual capabilities a few times already since joining the crew, especially before they left Belrea when she tagged along to watch him making deals with merchants. It admittedly had been a bit impressive…just a bit. Still hard to believe that Ephrym is the same guy from that time. He was usually such a goof! SEeing him though with the crew had made her take a few steps backwards, her own attitude dampening as she watched how others took his attention and reminded her that she was just a worker - nothing more.

“Oh.” Ephrym took a step backwards though his expression was completely playful. “As captain it is my responsibility to check on every member of my crew, dangerous or not, and as it is we’re sailing smoothly so I can take a bit of time to wander around.” He gestured towards the ocean that completely surrounded the misty maiden, no land in sight even on the far horizon, “I doubt we’ll be needing to dock any time soon so why not have a bit of fun?” Emiyn had already given him the go ahead for the day since the weather was clear and no one else had needed him. It had almost been a bit too boring, especially since he had already been chased from the galley and every other corner of the ship, and seeing Chrysanthe had given him a spark of hope for some entertainment. It helped that there wasn’t anyone nearby at the moment and he could see some of her personality flaring back to life.

“So bothering me is fun?” Replied Chrysanthe with a laugh, a rare noise the last few days. “I think you really should consider your hobbies, captain.” She let go of the railing to walk around towards a few storage crates. “If anything, maybe you could check on these if you’re that bored. I’m not that entertaining, you know.” Her fingers tapped against the corded ropes, the crates already obviously secured if not a little dirty from the wind and ocean air. “If you would like I could cut these apart and you could make a game of rearranging everything.” A jest, but perhaps a bit of a threat at the same time. She was not here for someone’s amusement! Chrysanthe shot him a glance, her golden gaze burning as she waited for Ephrym’s response. Even if he was her captain the girl was still new to the crew and her responsibility was keeping everyone safe once they wandered into Kahikina, not providing entertainment along the way.

Ephrym chuckled at the threat as he watched Chrysanthe walking around the crates, his spirits rising at the sound of her laughter. “Only if I have your help.” He teased playfully, his emerald gaze bright as she slowly dragged a finger across a rope. “I would gladly cut the ropes myself in that situation.” Chrysanthe almost looked like a sunbeam with the way the sun made everything about her shine, her golden hair even with the pink dyed tips seemed lovely and her whole appearance was bright. It was a shame that the golden spark preferred to be grumpy over embracing happiness and playing around a bit more. Strange how Sulien had talked about Chrys before Ephrym had ever met her and his friend’s description had already captivated him, but seeing the real thing had sealed the deal. Ephrym hadn’t been lying when he said that the ocean wasn’t the only beautiful thing around the ship. It was just hard to approach someone who would rather shoot you with a bolt instead of opening up to conversation and potential relationships. Ephrym had even had her at his side before they left Belrea just to get a feel for his new crewmate and despite her prickly exterior he couldn’t be more pleased with the addition of her presence in his life. He just hoped that somehow he could break through to her, let her know that she was safe with the crew and that there was no need for such barriers.

Chrysanthe’s cheeks flushed and she could only shake her head. She had been warned that their captain was a rather expressive type with no filter, but she was not prepared for the constant teasing! Today though she would not back down, at the moment it seemed so silly that she had been feeling shy around him recently. “You’re incorrigible.” She finally managed with a glance towards him. “If I cut these ropes right now you would not be in such a fine mood, even if I opted to help.” Why did he have to constantly play around with her like that? There was no way that he actually thought about her in such a light! Chrysanthe could hear the echoes of her past in her mind again, the constant harassment for being a hybrid and the silent shame that she had brought to her family by simply existing. How could she be beautiful? It simply wasn’t possible. Despite all of the progress she had made since running away from home when she was a teenager the girl couldn’t seem to completely let go of everything that had hurt her, not even while being surrounded by new friends in Belrea.

“You think so?” Ephrym always rose to accept a challenge and today was no different as he approached the ropes himself. Reaching out to grab one, his hand brushing against Chrysanthe’s own, the hybrid made certain it was firm before reaching for the dagger hanging from his hip. His free hand expertly freed the extra blade and he held it above the rope, the metal inching closer to the material. “I think I’ll just go ahead and take that as an offer to help me once I cut these ropes.” He was not simply jesting around and already the rope was fraying from where the sharp edge of the blade was slowly sinking in.

“St-stop!” Chryanthe’s face was already flushed from the sudden contact, but now that Ephrym was actually starting to cut the rope her cheeks were truly aflame. Without thinking the hybrid reached out to grab at his wrists, her first true contact with the captain, and the spark from touching him startled her. Static from the ropes. Her golden gaze sought his emerald one and the sniper shook her head in protest. “It’ll take so much time to fix everything, wouldn't that be a waste of everyone’s effort in securing these in the first place?” Dammit. He had truly caught her off guard by being reckless enough to bait her like this!

His gaze widened at the sudden touch, but a smile quickly crossed his lips as Ephrym turned to look triumphantly at Chrysanthe. He had managed to get the golden spark to backstep instead of going forward with attacking for once. I’ll take that win. Ephrym raised his arm slightly and pointedly looked at where Chrysanthe’s fingers were still curled around his wrist. “Fine, but we’ll have to go get some sealant to reinforce where I did cut a bit of the rope. Yokka will murder me for any mishaps.”

Realization made Chrysanthe snatch her hand back from Ephrym’s wrist. The tips of her fingers were still warm from touching him, but she kept her hands firmly by her side in protest. “Sealant? I suppose that would make sense.” She didn’t want to be the reason something happened to their cargo. The crew had worked hard to load up the ship with materials for trading with the natives at the islands. Trading would allow them to get first dibs on the unique materials and pieces from Kahikina to sell at a high price in their home markets in Belrea. It would be a shame to waste everyone’s efforts because their captain had decided to flirt with her. What a foolish thing to do. Chrysanthe shook her head before backing away from the crates. “Just tell me where the sealant is and I’ll go below decks to grab it.”

“You’ll get lost in storage.” Ephrym replied as he walked past Chrysanthe. “I’ll go with you.” The hybrid didn’t wait for a response and started walking across the deck, his easy gait a sign of his familiarity with the Misty Maiden and the ocean. This was where he was the most comfortable and his spirit was bright as he made his way down to the lower levels of the ship. Taking a key from his necklace, Ephrym fiddled with the lock before opening the wider door and gesturing for Chrysanthe to follow him inside. Even if he trusted his crew it was still best to keep certain areas under lock and key, including the storage area of some of their more volatile and rarer components.

“There should be a ceramic jar on one of these shelves.” He mused as he started searching about, his gaze looking about the dim lighting given to them from a port window.

What an infuriating man. Chrysanthe sighed as she followed after the captain, her steps less graceful as she descended and went towards the storage room. There were several on the ship and this was the first time she had ever been to this particular one. Admittedly it was interesting to see all of the different items lined up on the shelves, many tied down to prevent any storms from making a mess of the room, and the crates of other items made her curious about what all was actually needed for the ship. It seemed that they needed quite a few things for emergency maintenance, something that Chrysanthe never truly thought about before.

“There’s a whole shelf of jars over here.” Chrysanthe commented finally before turning to glance at Ephrym. It seemed when he was actually focused on something that he could be fairly handsome. She hadn’t gotten the chance to truly notice before since he was usually always moving or talking. The very thought made her cheeks darken as she reached for a jar and nearly stumbled as the ship swayed.
