Quote: Climb High and Ride Far (7) : In the middle of a metropolis, there aren’t many opportunities to get out and appreciate a nice snowfall. Sure, maybe you can look out of your window and appreciate the beauty of nature, but when was the last time you got to do something fun, like go sledding? Maybe never! This year, Destiny City has gone out of their way to set up the perfect hill for sledding–sixty feet tall, four hundred feet long, in a recently landscaped area of land close to the heart of the city. Vendors have set up stalls with snacks and artisan goods, and you can bring your own sled, innertube, skis or snowboard–or borrow, courtesy of the city, if you don’t have one already. Whether there’s been recent snow or not, DCU has some artificial, environmentally friendly artificial snow to keep the slopes fresh. You might not find an opportunity like this without heading elsewhere in the city, so why not take advantage of some fresh, free Winter fun? Winter sports were not normally his thing, he was lucky he could ice skate and not fall flat on his face, but skiing and snowboarding were both things he could not do. Maybe if he’d had more time, or if the city had snow-covered hills, Fionan would have learned to snowboard but he’d never had the time and Destiny City didn’t have snow-covered hills. He could have traveled, had he the time, but he never had.
But what he could do was use a sled to go down the snow-covered hill that Destiny City had built, he was rather pleased that they had decided to build such a thing for people to enjoy, it didn’t seem to have any issues with it unlike something - like the lake with squeaking sand. The sled was shiny, and new, as Fionan arrived at the base of the sledding hill though looking at it he wasn’t sure the word hill properly described this. Mountain didn’t fit either though, it wasn't near big enough.
Tilting his head a bit Fionan went to find himself something to nibble before he decided to head for the top of the hill so he could sled down, all so he could repeat it all over again.

Breana stepped out of the cafe only to be greeted by a blast of cold air that pinched her cheeks, turning them a blush-colored hue. The door swung shut behind her with a faint jingle from the bell above it. Her white hair peeked out from beneath a knit hat as she tucked her scarf closer around her neck. Snow crunched beneath her boots as she walked along the salt-covered sidewalk, a familiar but unwelcome sound. She didn’t bother hiding her disdain for the season. Snow might be pretty to look at but the heavy white clouds made her long for the sun. Winter was always too cold, too harsh, too… everything. She preferred the warmth of late spring to early fall, the kind that wrapped around her like a hug from an old friend. In her gloved hands, she cradled a grande gingerbread oatmilk chai tea latte, the heat of the cup seeping into her fingers even through the fabric. The spicy-sweet aroma was a small comfort against the winter air. Around her, people bustled with the kind of energy only snow could bring. Children laughing dragging sleds, teenagers careening past with snowbards slung over their shoulders, and couples walking arm in arm leaving trails of slush behind them. She turned to head down the street when a figure caught her eye- a man walking across the street. He was layered in winter clothes but his blond hair and silver eyes were unmistakeable. Fionan. Brana froze mid-step. It had been years since she’d last seen him. Out of respect for her sister, she didn’t reach out to him, but with Fiona not here to stop her, why waste an opportunity to say hello? Her heart gave a small unexpectedly excited lurch but steadied herself. There was no hesitation in her step as she crossed the street with purpose. The steam from her latte swirled in the air as she stopped a few feet from him, letter her voice cut carry above the chatter of people around them. “Now that’s a face I haven’t seen in a while.” Breana stopped a few feet from Fionan, coffee cup held between two gloved hands as a thin stream of steam rose from the hole in the lid. “With all those layers of clothes, I almost missed you.”

He’d just decided on a stall, one selling large pretzels, when he heard a voice close to him speaking up. He would have ignored it, figured the person was speaking to someone else, had he not recognized the voice. It had been years since he’d heard that voice, since he’d seen its owner, but when he turned he saw her - Breana.
“Breana, it’s been years.” What could he say? He’d been dating her sister but that had ended, years ago, and he hadn’t seen Brenan since because the only connection they had was Fiona. “How has Fiona been?” Was she seeing someone else? He wasn’t the jealous sort, he had no reason to be, but he almost wanted to ask but knew it wasn’t his place. It would also be awkward if he did dare to ask such a thing.
“I was planning to do some sledding, seeing as the city set up this massive hill, hence the clothing. I think I might grab something to nibble on first though…..join me?” He wasn’t sure about inviting her to join him, it was a bit awkward, but he had manners and there was no reason not to invite her to join him in sitting down. It wasn’t like he was asking her out or something else. They just might as well sit down since they were talking, and she had a drink, so he could grab something hot to eat while they spoke. He was planning on it anyway and he really didn’t want to stand about in one place, without something hot, when he’d just wind up getting too cold.

“It has been a long while, hasn’t it?” Breana replied, her tone a bit saddened by how much time had lapsed. She’d long since been so used to him being around that his sudden absence felt like a missing puzzle piece, leaving an unmistakable gap in her daily routine and interactions with her twin. “Fiona is…” Her voice trailed off, unsure how to put to words how things have changed. “She’s..” Breana drew in a breath while her heart and mind bickered over being honest with him and telling Fionan how withdrawn Fiona had become, or that they have been going through their own ups and downs, or just keeping quiet about it so she didn’t stir up trouble. “My sister holds onto a lot of regrets and tends to keep to herself.” Breana offered him a weak smile, wishing she could tell him that she was fine, or thriving in some way. But Fiona, at times, just seemed like she was existing rather than living. “You know, food sounds good. I only got this, to keep my hands warm while I walked around.” She glanced down at the cup she was holding in an attempt to shift the subject to something more upbeat. “Tell me, did you end up finding a job in your chosen field?” Unfortunately, she couldn’t remember what he was studying at Destiny City University but hoped that he found something he enjoyed.

"That's...not what I was hoping to hear. Even if I haven't seen her in years I had hoped she was doing well; that she was happy." To hear his ex had regrets wasn't what he wanted to hear nor did he like the idea of her keeping to herself, it meant she wasn't out and doing thigns and enjoying life as she should be. "You've been there for her I hope?" As if he really needed to ask, but he did anyway.
"Yeah, I did." Math and science had been his thing, always, and so winding up working as a mathematician was a good fit for him. He made a good paycheck and had been able to move out of his parents home, though he did support them a little bit, and despite it all he was still lonely in some aspects. He had his family, and he always would, and he had friends and those he played hurley with but beyhond that...a romantic life - not there. It would be fine if many of his friends weren't dating and when they went out it was often with their partners.
"What about you and Fiona? Good jobs I'm hoping." Because at least if that had gone well for Fiona it was something positive, something she'd worked hard for.

“I’ve been there for her as much as she’ll let me but her reluctance to step into uniform has put us at odds on more than a couple of occasions. Granted I may not have used my best judgment in a few situations.” Breana’s gaze lowered to the steam rising from her cup, ashamed to admit that fault out loud knowing that one such incident nearly resulted in her twin turning into a youma. “I’m glad things are working out for you career wise though.” She remembered him coming over around exam time, studying for finals with Fiona, up until she decided to take a break and bake cookies or some desert bread before hitting the books again. “Fiona still works at the ice rink, and often stays late after hours to take advantage of the open hour to practice for competitions.” Pausing, she took a sip of her latte, letting the warmth course through her before continuing. “Last I heard she’d moved up to manager, or CFO I think…” With a dual bachelor's degree in Business and Applied Science with an emphasis in Accounting, she had worked her way out from behind the skate rental and now had her own office space overlooking the arena. “As for me though, I’m working at a law firm as a paralegal and do some dog walking outside in the spring through fall.” While she loved to be outdoors when the weather warmed up, getting paid to go on a walk was always a bonus incentive.

"I do still wonder if we knew about each other, about the uniform thing, would have helped things or made things worse." Or would it have done nothing to the relationship? He didn't power up much at all, maybe he would have more if he and Fiona knew about each other and kept dating. A lot of what if's; too many. But there were always what if's when it came to former relationships, it was unavoidable. Here there were just more..unique ones.
"I never told her about myself...and I don't think y did either." He was fairly sure Fiona didn't know even now, as if it would make a difference somehow. It had been years.
"I'm proud of her, I'm glad she has an office now. Moving up from where she was...I don't know how well it pays but I know it's a job she loves." So he was glad for that, you might as well get paid for something you loved - right?
Heading towards some of the food stalls, intending to get some hot food for himself, he motioned the other to follow him. "You always did enjoy your walks, I assume you still do." If not more now than in the past, since now she made money for walking. "I wonder if we'd have still beeen together if we knew about each other." Stopping at a stall he went to orer himself some food, and a drink.

“Don’t worry, I’ve kept your secret. Admittedly it was hard at times, but I haven’t told Fiona about you being one of us.” On more than one occasion she’d almost let it slip, if only to push her sister a bit in a direction so she wasn’t paralyzed by fear and left standing still. Scared that her life as a Senshi would put someone she cared about in harm's way. Worried that she’d be hurt by someone if she discovered they were part of the Negaverse instead. Unwilling to keep such a secret from someone she cared about again. All that Breana understood, but It meant that Fiona made no effort to make new connections. At least, not until recently. However, Breana hadn’t had a chance to meet this new person yet, probably because the last time her twin introduced her to someone, Bre had perhaps complained too much while on his wonder that it made her sister too embarrassed to reach out to him again afterward. “I think it’s unfortunate that you two didn’t awaken at the same time.” She took a sip of her drink, pulling comfort from the warmth it offered which was being slowly stolen away by the cold air through the little hole in the top of the lid. “I think your abilities complement each other and you two would have worked together to keep each other safe.” She had to believe that had her sister never been forced to hide who she was as Alcor she would have embraced her role with Fionan by her side instead of shying away from the responsibility.
