tab Gwyneria Trethewey. That's what she went by now. All those years ago she had gone by another name. One that was floating around the school and it was slowly leading the nurse to drink. She couldn't believe that the name was returning. She had heard it the first time as she passed a couple of students, and they were talking about an assassin who lurked in the school. To be fair she should have known that rumors would start but when she heard her own name she stopped short. She hadn't gone by that name since the war, and that had been a little bit. Not a long while mind you, but enough so that Gwyn had begun to move past it. The mere mention of the name made her blood run cold. Ballista. The very mention of the name carried an air of the person she didn't want to be all the time, even if it was a requirement in the time that she used it.
tab She had found her way to her room, closing the door behind her as she tried to catch her breath. She had one hand clenched tightly to her chest as she leaned forward, a groan left her lips as she slid down the door and held her head. This wasn't the same happy nurse that the students and other staff began to get to know. This was the hurt inside her that she tried to keep down and hidden. It was the anger she felt for her own actions, and those of the people around her who either supported her or created her. She leaned her head back on the door and stared up at the ceiling. " Why now? Who thought to mention that I might be here?" she asked out loud, but even as she ran through her head of who knew her at the school it was very small. Serge knew of her as she him, but she didn't see him speaking about it. There was Ebony, but surely she didn't know of her true identity. The only other person she could think of was Vincent, but even she wasn't sure then. She slammed her hand against the door before she stood up and walked over to the cabinet in the corner of her room. She pulled open the door, looked in the back and pulled out her favorite drink from the back and cracked open the wine from Siscia that she had brought with her. She took a drink before leaning her shoulder against the wall. 's**t...I have my meeting with Nehal tonight.'
tab One more long drink and she slammed the bottle down but not hard enough to break anything as she began to get changed and she cleaned up her room a little bit, sliding the suitcase that she made sure to keep with her under the bed, not wanting her friend to be scared by the fact that she was capable of such things. Sure she wasn't the most docile person out of the staff, but she also wanted to be able to have a good time too. Especially since she wanted to actually relax when she saw him.
tab When the time came around for Nehal to show up, she sat sideways on her bed, holding a glass in her hand that was filled with the dark wine from before. She took another drink and leaned her head back, her cheeks flushed slightly already but she still had her bearings. " ******** rumors..." she mumbled under her breath, and she didn't know how long she sat in silence but a knock on the door brought her out of her glaze. " Come in!" she had left the door unlocked, her brown eyes flashing over to the door, waiting for it to open.

When Nehal had thought of life after the war, they had always envisioned something idyllic. Peaceful.
They had not imagined that they would have to once more handle living around Serge, of all people. He had put one of their favorite students in shackles! She hadn’t shown her face in days! The only thing saving their dance class from being that bit more miserable was having the stroke of genius to pair that infuriating Mirabella with the sweet, demure Aleithia. Same sex pairings tended to cause a flutter among the students, but this time it had brought calm. Dare they even say: peace.
Back to Serge, however–
Actually, no. No back to Serge, no dwelling on Serge, no acknowledging Serge existed at all tonight! This was their night, to get drunk and gossip with Gwyneria as they well deserved!
…well, maybe they’d gossip a little with Gwyneria about Serge, even if it didn’t go anywhere. They weren’t sure they would ever know if the man had some sort of mind manipulation magic, or if he was simply that charismatic, or if people were that willing to look the other way, or if it was a combination of all three to some degree or another–but it made talking s**t about him the most hilariously frustrating practice in existence.
…they should steal some of his blood and pester Izolda into running tests on it. She loved tests. They had the paperwork to prove it!
Gasp! They could probably get Gwyneria to get the blood for them! She was a nurse, nurses did that sort of thing, didn’t they?
Impressed with themself, they gave a rhythmic little knock on her door, waiting just long enough for her to welcome them in, then threw the door open to raise their bottle of Lunar wine up high.
"Darling Lady Gwyneria, I come bearing giiiiiiiifts–oh, boo, you’ve already started without me!" they pouted, spying the half empty glass at her side. They pushed the door shut with a tap of their heel, and sauntered in, looking her up and down with a curious eye. "Dearie, you look far too delicious in that dress to be wearing such a long face, this is supposed to be a fun time!"

tab When her door opened she caught a glimpse of the one she was waiting for. She couldn't help but crack a smile at the immediate way their tone shifted when they picked up on how the nurse was feeling. She laughed and shook her head, sitting upright and leaning on her legs a little. " Oh it was only a little bit, or else I'm afraid I would have been in a worse mood." she had a feeling at some point in the night she'd end up spilling why she was upset in the first place, but for now she could focus on the new presence in her space. She set her glass down to the side and pulled her legs up into a cross in front of her, feigning a bashful expression. " Oh why thank you! You look stunning as always as well--" she then registered that they had mention her expression and she exhaled, her brown eyes looking up at the ceiling. " There's a rumor running around that I just hate, and it came to my attention tonight, the way these royals and nobles like to spread them is extreme." she pushed her hair back and looked back to her friend before leaning over to the side, grabbing a second glass for them. " So! Do you want to try wine from Siscia first or...?" she was very excited to have them there, and to actually spend time without needing to keep a professional appearance at all times. Sure, around Mannon and actually, Marco, she was able to relax but neither of them really knew about her wild side. She was hoping Nehal could be one of the first.
tab She held the glass out to them, a more relaxed grin on her lips as she waited patiently. She had made sure to leave the bottle out that was the wine she always drank, but the one sitting on her side table was newer, and not the one she drank out of straight earlier. There was space to have them place the gifts they brought, so neither of them had to hold onto the bottles while they talked.

Nehal preened under her compliment, flicking the undulating tail of their hair back over their shoulder as they approached her in long, confident strides. How good of her to notice! They had spent hardly any time on their looks at all for this little soiree! Only an hour!
"There's a rumor running around that I just hate, and it came to my attention tonight, the way these royals and nobles like to spread them is extreme," the younger woman admitted, before quickly trying to change the subject by offering them their own glass and an unopened bottle of Siscia spirits (hoho!). Oh, good, no backwash with that one, then. They twirled their finger as though trying to choose, but after a few spins, it landed on the bottle Gwyneria was offering.
"Of course Siscia, darling, it’s not often I can try out the more exotic brands!" they scoffed, setting down their bottle, and taking the glass she offered before holding it out expectantly for her to fill. "Now, back to the hot goss–that is, gossip is a highly valued currency regardless of social class, it really should be no surprise to find it rampant here, of all places. The only way to escape it is to flee into the mountains!"
Their other hand fluttered in the air to illustrate their point, their tone carefree, but their expression sympathetic as they searched her face.
"Now, what are those nasty little children saying that’s upset you?"

Gwyneria always enjoyed Nehal as company as they had a flare for dramatics and in the best way possible. She couldn't help but laugh under her breath as they physically moved their hand before deciding on a wine selection. " Siscia it is!" she repeated before scooting forward slightly and cracking open the new bottle before she tilted it and poured it into the glass they held out for her to fill. She tilted it back and recorked it, setting it to the side again as she settled back against the wall. She found it hard to not smile when they were so enthusiastic about things even if the rumor mill was driving her insane. She adjusted her legs, so they were comfortable and held her own glass in her hand. " Oh, yes, the mountains would be so nice. Although probably getting a little cold this time of year." she laughed again, before she pushed her dark green hair back as she exhaled and raised her eyes to the ceiling for a moment. What kind of rumors were going around indeed.
Looking back to them she took another sip before she began. " So I guess it's probably not that bad of a rumor but you know how students talk. With everyone here having so many different histories it's kind of hard to avoid all different types in the halls." Hell, she hadn't expected to see Serge here! It was an almost pleasant surprise even if he was short with her. " Although the most recent one is I've heard there's someone in particular here even though their name isn't common knowledge." she hesitated for a moment, contemplating if she fully wanted to admit to them who and what she truly was, but they had in their own way admired the fact that she could hold her own when they found themselves in that maze. She leaned her head against the wall, her brown eyes shifting down as she spoke again. " An assassin, Ballista, I don't know if you've heard of them." before she fully admitted to who she was she'd gauge if they knew already. It might make it easier if they didn't know anything, but she had a feeling they possibly knew more about her old identity than she would have thought.

Their companion cracked open the bottle with casual efficiency, filling their cup, and then a little bit more when they waggled their eyebrows at her. They hummed as they took a taste, the dry notes hitting just right. When Gwyneria mentioned that the hypothetical mountains they had mentioned would be cold, they gave a theatrical little shudder.
"I’ll just have to endure the gossip, then!" they sighed as though it were a true hardship and not something they actively enjoyed.
" So I guess it's probably not that bad of a rumor but you know how students talk. With everyone here having so many different histories it's kind of hard to avoid all different types in the halls."
They made a little noise of agreement, and had another sip as they took a seat on the foot of her bed, carefully leaning back to recline on their opposite elbow so that they didn’t spill on her sheets. That would be awfully rude on their first girls’ night together!
"Although the most recent one is I've heard there's someone in particular here even though their name isn't common knowledge."
How delightfully vague! There were so many important particular names here in Utopia, and they were only just beginning to get to know Gwyneria, so they couldn’t even begin to guess whose presence would upset her? She was from Siscia, wasn’t she? Who were Siscia’s enemies…
"An assassin, Ballista, I don't know if you've heard of them."
Nehal pressed the cool glass against their temple, gaze going to the ceiling as they thought back. The name rang a bell, certainly, but not due to any personal experience. One more participant in the war, one more concern to Marie’s welfare, but not much more than that.
"The name sounds familiar, but those were very busy times," they shrugged, taking another sip, then considered her sympathetically over their cup. "Did this assassin kill someone you knew?"

Gwyneria laughed under her breath at Nehal's actions when she filled their glass. She couldn't help but enjoy their company, as if there was an air about them that allowed her to relax. And sure, the alcohol helped too. Green hair shifted as she turned her head slightly, looking over to Nehal as they relaxed at the foot of her bed. She knew it was naive of her to expect things to go so smoothly, and that her old name would eventually come back to haunt her. She had a feeling that they of all people wouldn't be pushed away if they knew, and it was something she had begun to feel lonely in. So perhaps she'd give it a chance if things went well tonight.
When Nehal thought to themselves, Gwyn rested her back against the wall and closed her eyes with a small smile. " Oh, thankfully, no. I mean, not in the usual sense." she took another sip of her wine as she thought back to all the times that she'd used the name to invoke fear, something she had once enjoyed. And perhaps, given the situation she might enjoy it again, but not as much as she used to. Pushing her hair back with one hand she leaned her head against the wall, eyes opening as she made a sound of agreement. " Busy times indeed, it's almost curious how far we've come, being able to spend time in another persons' presence without having to worry about what might happen or come of it." she, of course, meant purely in the sense of violence. There were so many years where she couldn't relax around people because she could sense the feelings in the air. Often times a gathering was just a guise for one or more people to wind up dead, or worse. While she didn't know exactly what Nehal had done during the war, she had seen their ability firsthand, and she certainly found it quite cool. She didn't openly admit such things all the time, as she didn't know how people felt about their own abilities, but she had a feeling they wouldn't mind.
" I have to admit, I was very impressed the other night. You're not only a fashion icon, but you have the strength to back it up." she meant her words, raising her own glass slightly, a smile on her face as she tilted her head to look up at the ceiling.
Alright, now or never.
She cleared her throat and sat upright, setting her glass against her legs, looking down at her feet. " The reason the name is bothersome, is because I wanted to avoid it. I mean, nobody wants to know that their trusted nurse used to be a mercenary known for quiet assassinations." a pause, her brown eyes darkening before she shook her head and looked over at them again, pointing her finger to herself. " That used to be the name I went by, but I was hoping to dodge it as much as I could, although somehow rumor has it that they're here." she was speaking of "Ballista" as a third person, as if that time in her life was separated by years of practice. When in reality this mercenary was made from necessity and replaced the woman that now spent her time helping other people. " Thankfully, that training still does come in handy sometimes." she gave her coworker a moment to absorb the information she just said out loud, even though she couldn't believe it herself, and took another sip as she looked at the wall across from where she sat.
