A spring in his step, a grin on his lips, and his eyes locked on the buffet that had been set up for the students. This was one of Luka’s favorite times of the day: lunch! It came in second only to hanging out with his siblings, something he adored more than anything else. Had his sister and brother been with him during feeding time, he would have thought it the best of both worlds. Unfortunately, they had other plans and had politely declined. It had bummed him out, a little, but he knew they were busy people. Who was he to demand they spend every moment of their free time with him? No one that important, he mused as he made his way through the masses.
The spread that the academy provided for the royals was one of the finest he’d ever been allowed to partake in. Granted, a lot of it was stuff he’d never tasted before, having grown up on the streets. He was nothing if not flexible, though. Every meal he made it a point to try something new. Whether it be sushi from his own kingdom, which he had found delightful. Or Takoyaki from Winduria, which had been far too chewy for his liking. Every day became like an adventure for his tongue, one he looked forward to every afternoon.
On this particular day, he found himself in the mood for some comfort foods. Soups and stews were perfect, so he loaded his tray up with a few chowders he recognized as well as two new ones. Something called Kofta that was popular in Funkazan and Aguadito de Pollo that seemed to be a well liked dish from Thah. The lady that served him the two new ones warned him that that Thahian one was spicy, but Luka paid her no mind. He wasn’t afraid of a little heat. It wasn’t like he shied away from hot things, after all. The people he had been spending his free time with lately was proof of that.
The way his mind wandered had him grinning again as he moved to a nearby table. The bowls of stews and soups were set up in a semi-circle around him, with the tray he’d used being set aside on the seat beside him. Amber eyes ran over each of them in turn, wondering where he should start. Did he want to go in with his favorite and end with the newbies, or should he get the new stuff out of the way so he didn’t end on a sour note if he didn’t like them? A finger tapped on his bottom lip as he furrowed his brow in thought, trying his best to figure out which direction was best for his stomach overall. In the wake of her first history class and the aftermath, it felt as though the only thing keeping Nalani straight was her promise to her uncle to keep her cousins safe. When she wasn’t deeply disassociating in the nearest body of water, she was right on their asses, always on guard for potential threats. Which meant she quickly took notice of someone who wouldn’t leave them alone. Someone whose face she couldn’t quite place, but his proximity to royalty had her hackles raising. It hadn’t been difficult to remain quietly in the background, since Remi and Alosa acted more awkwardly around her than they did with the newcomer, but everything she overheard didn’t clear things up much.
It itched at her.
When she spotted him finding a seat by himself in the dining hall, it was only natural that she stalk up to him from behind, shark teeth growing sharp beneath her lips, and consider biting into the nape of his neck for a death strike. Then she remembered the way he had made her cousin laugh, and she deflated. Straightening her spine, she instead moved around him to turn a chair so that she could use it as a stepping stool to sit on the tabletop next to his spread of food. She plucked up one of the chowder bowls to gulp down half of it, and eyed him with a glare.
"What’s your deal with the L’eau siblings?" she demanded to know in a low tone before licking up the side of the bowl.

As amber eyes studied his food, a familiar sensation washed over him and had his body stiffening in response. Someone was watching him. He made no move to look around, keeping his attention in front of him so as not to tip off the creeper. Had he already made an enemy? He knew the snake was a top contender on the list, but he didn’t strike Luka as the hide and strike kind. He was too flamboyant for all of that. Perhaps the b*****d was after him? They hadn’t had the best exit after history class, but was it enough to garner an assault from the back? Not sure he wanted to know the answer, he shifted in his seat to prepare himself and waited for the assailant to make their move.
What he hadn’t anticipated was for the individual to side step everything and move directly in front of him. Surprise danced in his eyes as a woman came into his field of vision, one he immediately recognized from his past. Her demanding question had a chuckle rumbling in his chest, his head shaking at her bluntness. It seemed some things hadn’t changed. It was a comforting feeling that had Luka relaxing a bit. He grabbed the bowl closest to him, a chowder from his home kingdom, and began to dig in as he watched the woman.
”Color me surprised to find the Monster of the Mists strutting around a school for nobles. Didn’t figure you to be the type, Miss Monster.” A spoonful of chowder went into his mouth after every few words, his focus on his food just his way of getting under the woman’s skin. If she was curious about his siblings, there had to be a reason. But where was the fun in just asking out right? It was far more interesting to poke at her first, just to see how far he could go before she threatened him.
”As for my business with the L’eau siblings, I do believe that is none of yours. So, unless you have something else to discuss with me, perhaps you should be on your way and let me enjoy my meal. Though, you are welcome to some of it, if you’d like. I know it’s not your usual breakfast of men and beasts, but I’m sure it will suffice in a pinch.” Luka waved a hand at his spread as he spoke, grinning now as he paused in his eating to watch her. Oh, this was going to be good! He was more than certain his tone would earn him one of her infamous responses and he wanted to be ready when she exploded in the middle of the dining hall.
