The afternoon had crept upon Aldo without him realizing it. Earlier that morning, still having free time to himself, the professor had found a quiet place to conduct his ongoing experiments. The veranda he had chosen had so far been left alone by the staff and the students, giving him ample space and quiet to conduct his research. With the number of strange phenomena caused by such a wide variety of people and powers in one place, it led him to believe that it might have an ongoing effect on weather in the area.

Air gathered energy as well as many of the other elements, and with so many strange and wondrous powers gathered in one area, he had been playing with the idea that it might affect localized weather patterns he had seen during the war. He and his brother Daniel had written extensively on the subject in letters to each other, especially with the use of his brother and the other men of his unit manipulating air currents for their own gain. He himself had been better able to determine enemy positions when there was a strong change in current.

While the school may not have been a battleground per say, there was a great deal of energy here, and he had taken it upon himself to study the patterns that gave away the approach of those around him. It came relatively easy given the range of energy that others gave off here. Today, however, he had spent the better part of his time focused up rather than out. It took a great deal of focus to keep track of the currents hundreds of feet above the school and its grounds. His eyes were closed, his senses aimed upwards, and his reading casually jotted in a leatherbound book at his feet. Sitting cross legged on the ground he almost seemed to be meditating, which was not far from the truth.

It was this that seemed to have distracted him enough to not detect the presence of others coming down the corridor to his little place of calm.

Khai used to be a general in the war. He wasn't sure if people forgot that or didn't care. Not that he was one for boasting about his title in the first place but sometimes he felt outright insulted. The only person that he would allow such things from was his spouse, but he knew that Varsha would never. Not in a serious manner anyway. Their son, well, he didn't know any better. Khai was regretting his lack of exercise routine right now. For a toddler, and one who had just recently mastered the art of running away from his father, he was surprisingly fast. " Gandria be careful!" he was managing to keep up with him but was taking a hit on the endurance department. He had accidentally bumped into a student, and when he turned his head slightly to apologize the two-year-old decided this was the best time to turn. And into a hall that was not unoccupied.

Thankfully Khai spotted his movement and after a hasty apology he took off again hoping to keep up and stop him from bumping into anyone. This was, of course, exactly what happened, however. He spotted the blonde man sitting on the floor, vaguely recognizing him as a professor as well. " Gandria--" his voice came a moment too late as the little boy ran full force into the man's back. Khai inhaled sharply as the toddler fell back and landed on his butt before looking up at his father. The tears threatened to begin and before they could all out happen, he scooped up the toddler, holding him in his arms. " It's okay, you're fine." he wasn't hurt, just surprised. Khai's green eyes looked over towards Aldo as he smiled apologetically. " Our apologies. As you can see, he has a mind of his own most of the time." the child's tears had dried up, never really fully falling despite how close he had come. " It's Aldo, right? I don't know if I've actually introduced myself. I'm Khai." adjusting his grip on his son, he forced the words from his mouth despite almost wanting to just keep going on his way. He knew that he'd have to socialize eventually, and another professor was a better option than one of the many students that liked and knew how to get under his skin.

The sudden impact into his back startled the sitting professor, and a breath expelled Oomf. Startled as his senses came back down to his surroundings, he slid his legs out from his position and pulled up into a kneel, using his hands for support. Standing slowly, he dusted off his legs and came to his full height. Standing there holding the toddler in his arms was Mr. Tahan, whom he believed taught the art of war to students.

Although Alden highly disapproved of the class and its education on a personal level, he understood its necessity. If only better decisions had been made, war could have been avoided. Perhaps Khai could be the one to teach this generation better methods to avoid it. No doubt better than him with teaching them about weather patterns.

Putting his hand out, Aldo replied, “A pleasure Khai.” Glancing to the young boy he smiled and nodded, following with “Hello there little fellow. Give your papa a run for his money I see?”

Aldo had no kids of his own, although he did have a niece and a nephew through his brother. They were going on three now he believed, and had not had an opportunity to visit them yet. I caused his mind to wander for a moment as he thought about if they were running about his home and causing him and his darling wife no end of excitement.

“What is the young lad’s name Khai?”

Khai was grateful that the man wasn't as easily angered as some of the others around the school. He worried about his wife and child to no end and the different personalities certainly didn't help. He knew that there were all kinds and he couldn't protect them all the time, but at the least Gandria had bumped into someone that was kinder than some others. He took the others lead and extended his hand, giving the other man's a firm shake. " Likewise." he allowed a bit more warmth to spill into his words that time, a small smile on his lips. the toddler in his arms had gotten over the shock factor of running headfirst into someone and now was watching his father talk to the new person. His dark eyes looked over to Aldo and instead of an actual answer he laughed, leaning his head over onto Khai's shoulder. It was clear that he was having fun with running away from his father. Khai sighed, the toddler kept both of them busy but he wouldn't have it any other way.

At the follow up question he looked over to the boy in his arms, gently brushing his thumb along his cheek. " Gandria. He takes more after his mother when it comes to energy and the enjoyment of making me try and catch him." the thought of his wife made a genuine smile flicker across his face and he realized another fact before lifting his head up and letting the toddler grab his hand and hold onto it. " Perhaps you have met her. She's the music teacher, Varsha." she was likely better known than he was, and honestly, he was okay with that.

The young child's reaction warmed Aldo’s heart. The not so fragile little person’s sense of humor was hard to resist. He missed that innocence himself, but did his best to hold onto it everyday as best he could.

“Well it's a pleasure to meet you, Gandria,” he said to the toddler warmly.

With a firm shake of Kahi’s hand, he released and listened as he asked if he had happened to meet his wife.

“I cannot say I have had the pleasure,” he started. His interaction with staff had so far been rather limited he was afraid to admit. He had not even been aware that Kahi was married and had a child.

Then again with all the staff, faculty, and students, it was hard to keep track unless he interacted with them relatively frequently. Admittedly it was his own fault. He was not inherently xenophobic. To him, a person was simply a person, but old habits died hard. He was civil to everyone but had been more open with the students than the teachers

“Music you say? I feel like there must be quite the story there somewhere if she tried so hard for you to catch her. I must admit I am a little jealous, I hadn't much time for courtship before my appointment here, and to say the least, have not devoted much time towards it since my arrival.”

It was rather an interesting thought. With all the nobles here, he had left such ideas far from his mind, not wishing to be involved any further in political struggles. Relations had been a thing from before the war that had vanished from his life. While his brother had succeeded, an unmarried officer just wouldn't have done. However, a single teacher was less looked down upon. He wondered if he really wanted to be married, but he supposed time would tell on that.

Khai knew that by all accounts he wasn't the person that people often saw with her. She was a ray of light in the world that had always been dark for him before she came into it. He was fully aware that she was probably a little too good for him, a man who had lived his life so ingrained in war that it became part of his very person, but like always she managed to see past that and into the person he was on the inside. He also knew that he changed as time had gone on, wanting to protect that light that came into his life even if it was through strange circumstance. A small smile remained on his face as he looked back over to the boy in his arms, holding onto his hand and running his fingers along his palm as if he was exploring something brand new and hadn't done this a million times before. At least it felt like he had. " It was unexpected, and certainly, if one had asked me before I met her it was unlikely to happen." he pulled his hand back slightly before he readjusted his arm and looked back over to Aldo. " We actually met only by chance, but being part of my service we couldn't let anything happen to her group, and slowly but surely she had me wrapped around her finger." he wouldn't go into great detail but it was clear from the soft look in his eyes that he had no eyes for anyone but his wife.

He didn't know the first thing about true courting and was just grateful that fate had placed them in the same place at the same time. He tilted her head to the side slightly, which pulled the attention of Gandria and he reached for Khai's hair which seemed to be normal because the man didn't react. " As things were it was not easy. The war had an impact on a lot of people, both good and bad." he hesitated, almost wanting to ask if the blonde teacher had anyone in mind but he knew better than to pry when it wasn't any of his business. " How have you been finding things to be going?" there was something about being able to have a casual conversation that was equally unnerving and curious to him. He wasn't going to say no to it now, especially as he was the one who allowed the little menace in his arms to run into the man.

A warm smile spread over Aldo’s face as Kahi described their meeting. It was easy enough to deduce from the soft change in his voice. At the comment about him being wrapped around his wife’s finger, he couldn’t help but chuckle. It was a similar notion that his brother had insisted on when they had spoken on the subject. He had encountered many a man who claimed the opposite, that it was them that had control in their relationships. Although he was sure that one or two may be telling a sort of truth, it was this honest revelation by others that caused him to lean towards the reality being that men such as himself had little control at all.

The sudden switch to a comment about the war wiped the smile from his face, leaving a blank response. Aldo struggled to fight off memories of his time in the war, not wishing to relive any of it at the moment. Shaking the thought from his head, he instead focused on the following question.

“So far so good, I fear that weather is not the most popular of subjects with the students, but I cannot blame them for that. I just hope that I am able to instill that knowledge that may help them in their future.”

He imagined that he was not the only teacher to feel this way. A variety of pampered nobles being forced into schooling with a variety of subjects that didn’t tickle any of their interests. In the end, it would be best for them, and he hoped that they would take the good lessons they could provide and do good for the world.

It was only a moment before he remembered his purpose today, and he reasoned it wouldn’t hurt to discuss it with another who lived and worked here.

“On that subject, a question for you if you have a moment. Have you noticed strange weather around the academy during your classes? I spent a fair time studying the effects of magic on weather, and with such a concentrated amount of powers, I’ve noticed some off events taking place.”

So, the war was a sensitive topic. Noted.

The suddenly blank look on the other man's face was logged in the back of his head, and he knew he shouldn't bring it up again. He never knew how people would react especially because there was another example of someone who, while she dodged the subject, it was with a smile on her face. He hadn't talked much with the nurse, but she was vaguely familiar in a way he couldn't place, but he didn't push it. He knew better than to open his mouth when it was such a subject as sensitive as the not-so-distant war they had pulled out of. The topic of the weather did make him a little curious as he nodded his head, trying to ignore the light tugging on his hair as Gandria stared at Aldo as they spoke. " That I can understand. It's our job to teach them what we know and have learned, be that from just experiences or lessons in general." he spoke quietly before humming and looking down at his son in his arms. " That's one of the perks of my power, being able to remember most everything. It serves well with speaking on how things have gone in the past." he knew that the other man may not have known where he was from, but it was fine, it wasn't like they were bound to the same rules as the students.

He lifted his head and waited as Aldo spoke about the weather, and if he noticed any differences. He thought about it, his green eyes raising up to the ceiling briefly before he looked back to the other teacher. " My classes are usually pretty quiet, I don't do anything to exciting, so it's hard to get the feelings up. However, the only thing I've really noticed is that there's one particular student who I believe is from Ulium and when she gets really angry lightning strikes." and if he was honest, he didn't really pay much attention to the weather. " Although I'll begin to keep an eye out. Report back anything I do see." he offered up, it wouldn't hurt to begin the process of making an ally or even perhaps a friend one day. Especially where Aldo didn't get upset when his child ran into him. It meant he was patient.

The hint of his power was enlightening to Aldo. The ability to retain so much information was quite a boon, although not being able to forget other things would no doubt counter that in ways. Old Aldo always scribbled down in his notebooks to keep track of everything in neat order so as not to forget. Too much to remember, too much data to collect. A tinge of jealousy hit him at the idea of having such a power, although he did not know if he could trade his own for anything in the world.

To have such a collection with the air around him made him always feel as if he was part of the world around him, even when he secluded himself to his scholarly studies. There was no place at the academy, current circumstances as evidence, that would allow him free of contact. He did not mind it though. People were social creatures after all, and it did them good to converse and share in the world with one another. Today was a fine example as such. Prejudice and bias might have kept him from Khai, but the man had been nothing but polite and even warm so far.

“Oh you don’t have to go to any effort on my part, it is simply a curiosity of mine. Though the energy generated by such lightning strikes is rather extraordinary, I would love an opportunity to see that in action, though I shouldn’t wish to put a student in such a position or way for my own scientific satisfaction. Did you smell the ozone after that, a sharp tinge in the air?”

And there he went again, his mind diving into it already as he processed through how lightning was created and its affects. One day he may learn to turn off his even inquisitive nature, but for now it found a way to slip out again.

“My apologies, I get excitable when it comes to the subject, as you can see. Sometimes I can't seem to help myself, too inquisitive for my own good.”

Khai couldn't help but feel a twitch in his lip as he smiled slightly. It was nice to see the other man so excited about something, even if something usually so mundane as weather. Humming softly, he shifted his grip on the toddler in his arms as the boy began to pull on his ponytail with one hand and pull up on his shoulder to get higher than his father's head. " Something tells me this particular student wouldn't mind so much, although she's more focused than I can say for most of them." he said quietly, thinking back to the brown-haired woman who seemed frighteningly focused especially when sat near who he assumed to be a relative of hers. Pushing the thought away he closed one eye and made a sound under his breath as Gandria put more weight on his shoulder in a way that made his arm tingle. " Hey, don't do that." he chided softly, adjusting the boy as a whine left him, but he turned his attention towards Aldo anyway. Khai smiled slightly as the child squirmed and insisted on being put down, clearly over running into the stranger without warning. He leaned down, setting the boy down before shaking his head at Aldo's words. " Think nothing of it. I can appreciate enjoying something that keeps you pulled in."

He kept a close eye on the boy who walked up to Aldo, eyes sparkling with curiosity as he tugged on his pants and smiled wide up at him. " Mahāśaya, do you like the weather?" at first it came off as an obvious question but after he got his initial response he continued. " What's your favorite? I like the sun! It lets me go outside and I can dance with Māṁ and Bāpū out to play or dance." the words made Khai rub the back of his neck before taking advantage of his hand being up and tightened his hair again, fixing it after the tug on it earlier. " Hah, sorry about that. Good news is he likes you, so you can be prepared for surprise visits now, I'm sure." and where Gandria was, he or Varsha wouldn't be far behind. He actually felt a little better about the ordeal knowing that he was getting to know someone that he didn't know before, and another man here at the academy. After all he and Marco seemed a bit too similar in the sense they didn't go out of their ways to talk to the other. And if he was honest, Serge was too much for him, not that he'd ever give that information away. An old habit from the war, keeping his secrets close to his chest.

His ears perked up as Khai mentioned that the student might not mind such experimentation, but was quickly distracted as his companion let out a noise which ended with the young child being set down. He did his darndest not to grin at the thought, memories of his brother with his nephews tickling the back of his mind.

Did he want children? He wasn’t so sure. The idea appealed to him, a loving wife, a few children, a peaceful life. For some time the vision lurked in the faded corners of his thoughts, but much of it was overpowered by the pursuit of knowledge. He was an academic at heart. Regardless, the thought was all speculative and dream-like as a partner was needed for the situation to occur, and so far he wasn't exactly fighting off scores of admirers. Not that he had really been looking. Perhaps smiles and kind words that he received and distributed could have led to something more by now. Who was he to say they had not been?

His attention was pulled back as the young lad tugged upon his pant leg and asked him something. His mind seemed to have wandered for a moment, and before he could ask the boy to repeat, his brain reminded him of the question.

“I just love the weather,” he said with a smile, leaning down a few inches to address him. He waited a moment as he was asked another question, and the smile grew wider as the child answered his own question. “I love sunny days too, they are my favorite too. I just love the feel of the warm sun on my face and a cool breeze.”

Lifting his chin to look back at Khai, he responded, “You three are most welcome anytime. Anyone who can pull my nose out of my books is a welcome distraction. We are social creatures by nature, and I believe I may forget that from time to time.”

It was all too true, aside from faculty meetings, students, and the occasional trip to the library, Aldo had been reclusive since his arrival. It was not intentional of course, just the freedom the academy provided him left him with time to focus on his studies and findings. The restrictions under government watchfulness was necessary, but restrictive and chaffed against his academic curiosity. Here, aside from his periods of instruction, he had the time and space to do as he desired, within reason so long as no one was put at risk. It pulled a weight from his shoulders, but without polite society deeming that it was necessary for him to socialize, it seems that he tended to get lost in his own little world. Then again, it seemed that even in casual conversation he found his mind wandering. The curse of an active mind he supposed.

Khai shook his head as Gandria asked a line of questions, the little boy slipping into Phronese for a few words here and there. They had made sure to teach both their home languages to him so that they preserved their culture and the things that made them, well, them. He was far less relaxed than his wife and it showed often with how things went, and he now even saw Varsha in their little boy. He was outgoing, talkative and didn't hesitate to pull people in for a conversation or to show them something. He was grateful that he took after his mother, and not himself, because he was quite quiet as a boy and that didn't change even up into adulthood unless you counted everything that happened with the war. He couldn't help but smile down at the boy who was beaming at Aldo as he answered his question.

The child's dark eyes lit up when he heard his answer and a gasped softly, dramatically at that. " Really!? You like the sun too?" it was quite cute in Khai's eyes that that's all it took for the little boy to be so excited. " What do you like to do on those days? How do you watch the weather? Doesn't the sun burn your eyes if you look directly at it?" the child rapid fired questions as he looked back to his father for a moment and then to Aldo. " Papa doesn't like to dance as much as mama, although she's good a convincing him. She tells me I'm getting good at it too." Khai felt his ears prickle slightly at the sound of his son's words, oh he was talking about him. He rubbed his neck and looked away with a low chuckle. Yeah, it was true, they were his kryptonite when it came to will power. As in, he had none when they wanted to do something so harmless. Even if he wasn't usually one to do it. " He is correct, of course. Varsha has much more life to her than I do, although perhaps that balances out." the thought of being able to visit time to time made him relax slightly; he was glad to hear they weren't being a bother, not really. " I'm sure we'll take you up on that sometime, especially if a little someone gets it in their head." he gave the little boy a pointed look, but he was smiling while he did it.

The rapid onslaught of questions left the poor academic chuckling to himself. There was something in the unending curiosity of children as they learned about the world around him that never failed to impress him. It started to die off in many as their schooling wound down. Interest tended towards whatever thing that found themselves obsessing over or those they were attracted too. He supposed they all went through it, it was simply part of nature.

Looking down to Gandria he replied to his questions with “I love sunny days. Sometimes I just like to sit out and feel the sun on my face and listen to the birds. And as far as watching the weather,” he began, then tapped his nose,” I have a special sense for it. I can feel and hear the weather as it changes when I listen closely enough. And if its an especially nice day, sometimes I like to go outside and fly through the air, but shhhh don’t tell anyone other than your mama and papa,” he added, giving a conspiratorial wink.

He paused briefly as his mind caught up to the change in the line of conversation.

“I can’t say I am much of a dancer, but perhaps we can all dance if we have some sort of party for the school,” he offered.

His attention turned back to Khai. “They do say opposites attract. Though I fear for what might count as my opposite,” he responded, a chuckle following close after.

“I look forward to it. As I said, I don’t get many visitors, and I am sure my family has told me more than a time or two to get my nose out of the books and try to live my life a little.”

The thought of a dance seemed to glimmer in the back of his mind. It would be expected no doubt of the students, and of course the staff would be asked to chaperone for the event. It surprised him actually that there were not more already. From what he remembered of higher society they loved any excuse to gather, show off, and gossip. He had never been one for it himself, but the social company was part of life.
