As another dull and dreary day began, Inessa found herself unable to focus on much of anything. She tried to read, and ended up getting sleepy. She tried to paint, and ended up getting irritated with her inability to put her feelings onto the canvas. She’d even tried to skate, but even that hadn’t been enough to quell her restlessness. Why couldn’t she settle on something? What was tugging at her so completely that she couldn’t find joy in the things she usually loved?
A soft voice whispered her siblings names in her head, reminding her that she hadn’t had a chance to reunite with them. Was that it? Was she getting twitchy over the eventual meeting the trio would have? No, she was excited. Elated, even. Perhaps she was more tired of waiting. It had been years since she’d been able to see her brother, and she’d never been able to show her sister the love and adoration she had kept from her since they were young. Just thinking about it had her fingers toying with the hem of her blouse, a bad habit Anya quickly tsked her for. Her hands dropped and she smiled apologetically at her handmaid.
”Proshu proshcheniya, Anya. Segodnya ya ne mogu usidet' na meste.” The handmaid bowed her head in understanding, knowing fully what was troubling her mistress. Thankfully, the brunette said nothing and simply waited for the princess to make a choice. She would have offered choices, but knew this was something Ness needed to learn for herself. She would be a wife one day, a mother even. If she couldn’t make a decision over how to handle her own emotions, how was she going to handle those of her husband and children?
Had Inessa known what her companion was thinking, she would have been shocked. Thankfully, she didn’t. Instead, she was trapped in her own thoughts as she left her dorm to stroll out into the school hallways. The soft click of her heels was the only sound she made, the toffee colored slacks she was wearing swirling around her ankles with every step she took. Her ivory blouse was tucked into the top of the pants, while a brown belt the same shade as her boots finishing up the outfit. It definitely wasn’t late autumn/early winter attire, but it was comfortable. And that took priority over the conventional in her book.
It didn’t take her long to leave the academy building, seeking the silence of the outside world over the hustle and bustle of being social. Not that she would have minded talking, of course. She just didn’t know anyone well enough to try. Her first introduction to the world had been her partners in art class. And that had ended…well. If she didn’t have to deal with Oliver and Nalani again, she would be the happiest of students at Utopia Academy. Her body shuddered at the memory of what she’d seen, still reliving it a bit in her dreams thanks to the beast Nalani had become. Inessa had been warned of the…unusual types she’d meet, but that had been something else entirely. How that woman was a noble, she would never understand.
As she wandered, the greenhouse came into view. A thought ventured through her mind and had her looking to Anya. A soft nod was her response, knowing the woman read her better than anyone else in her life. Aside for her mother, of course, but that was a given. Pleased by the acknowledgement, Ness picked up her pace to reach the glass house as quickly as she could. They had similar structures back home, but the snowy haired female was sure it was nothing like what they had here. Or, rather, what was housed within the walls of this particular structure was far more fascinating than the crops and flora that Hyouden was known for.
The instant she opened the door to the humidity within, she was struck by the smell of something foreign and fragrant. It tickled her senses and had her features shifting from icy and uncaring to soft and amazed. She left behind the ice princess mask she usually carried, falling back into her true self to spin in a slow circle. There was so much to see, so much to smell. All of it was new, exciting, and had her wishing she’d brought a pencil and paper with her. Inessa did her best to mental capture it all, grinning brightly as she traced her fingers over the crimson petals of a flower she’d never seen before in her life.
”Anya, ty kogda-nibud' videla chto-to stol' prekrasnoye? Ili chuvstvovala takoy soblaznitel'nyy zapakh? Mne pochti khochetsya ikh s"yest'!” Her words earned her a laugh from her handmaid, the brunette simply shaking her head at her mistress’s words. Ness flushed a bit at the declaration, shooting the other woman a playful look before strolling through the aisle to find something new to touch.

talking ★ thinking
Having no classes and being ‘off the clock’ meant he could breathe easier. He wasn’t being forced to subject himself to all these royals and other nobles that were there. There were reasons he flat out refused to attend most court related things so being forced to go to Utopia went over as well as a lead balloon. He didn’t hide his irritation, and he might have given that particular court official that delivered the message a bird or two because the old b*****d dared to leverage his own Duchy against him. Levi had to remind himself that even though attending Utopia was a years-long assignment, in the end it was temporary. He was still able to go back to his Duchy on his off time. It wasn’t like he was going to die of old age there, but sometimes he wished for lightning to strike him dead.
A yawn escaped him. Sleep had not come fast for him the night before, even with the amount of walking he did to at least exhaust himself into it. Jogging would have been more effective but he was saving that energy and his legs for the one he took up most mornings. The burn that came after a few miles of strenuous exertion was one that felt painfully sweet and left him blissed out. “Steve.” He called out when he returned to his dorm room, bending over and lowering his hands toward the floor. After a couple of ruffs, his tags jingled as he padded out from under the bed and to his owner’s hands. A sideways smile formed as he gave the small boy some scratches before picking him up to his chest. Right away he smelled the familiar scent of shampoo one of the servants used and could see where his shiny coat was trimmed. “Someone’s happy today. And got pampered too.”
Levi made no plans to go to the greenhouse; he knew it was there from the campus map he received when he first got there but didn’t particularly care to explore it until that day. It was only because Steve went on a sniffing frenzy that they were there. He looked around in the general direction of the sun. There was still daylight and what plans he had next weren’t until well after nightfall. It’d grow colder as the sun went down but both were dressed for it, even Steve in his little green hoodie. “Fine, we‘ll go in. But if you try to eat something we’re leaving, got it?” Steve looked up at him and tilted his puppy head with a yap. The yap meant absolutely nothing but Levi took it as an agreement to the terms anyways and the both of them went inside.
Of course, he found flowers. Woopty-freaking-doo. He had nothing against them and sometimes they even smelled good, but they weren’t really his thing. Last time he had to deal with them was during the art project which was a whole damned disaster. Charon reminded him of his dead twin, and he concluded after dealing with Anastasia he’d rather pluck his own nose hairs if he ever had to again. Evie was a whole other story; her reasons were beyond valid for hating him, but her presence wasn’t easy for him either. His reasons would go with him to his grave if he had anything to do about it. At least it was warmer in there, warm enough that Levi unzipped his top jacket.
It was as he turned the corner with Steve in tow that he realized he was not alone in that greenhouse. The woman that was floating between the aisles of plants and flowers looked like one of the smarter, more elegant types. And a happier one too if her behavior was any indication. He didn’t understand a word she said but it sounded enthusiastic and had her companion laughing. Levi pressed his lips together tight before relaxing them. It had him feeling a little green with envy to see her, a possible stranger no less, as happy as a flower absorbing sunshine.
Instead of choosing violence against it and the stranger who harbored it he turned to the first flower that caught his eye so that he could focus on identifying it instead. It was a festive looking one with pink stripes and a stringy center. It only took a few seconds to find the name of it from his memory. 'Clemantis.' The page from the plant book he was referencing mentioned it came in different colors. He’d seen it here and there around Phronese.
He heard Steve’s tags jingling and quickly looked down at him and where he was going. ”Steve, get back here.” Levi said hushedly but it was obvious the pup did not hear him. Or ignored him. His cute looking self was trotting to and started down the aisle the two women were on. Levi called him again but this time in his natural volume and through closed teeth. ”Steeeeeeve.” He started down the aisle too to collect his fur child.
