Follows Death Becomes Him

The sprinklers got to them before the dogs could. The quiet sputter had Malory shifting against the nice warm body he clung to, the ache in his ribs almost pleasant, like a morning stretch before burrowing back into the blankets. Or even closer to Eles as the case may be. There was barely time to note the squish of grass beneath him or the brush of air over just about all of him, when he was suddenly getting rained on.

Or at least sprinkled upon. Very aggressively by the nearest sprinkler. Jolting up, hand slapping down rather hard on the nearest surface, which happened to be Eles. Wide-eyed and disoriented, he looked around and saw several piles of clothes, the glint of a couple opened packets, and his boy all strewn across the grass with him.

Dumbly sitting in the middle of it all, he gazed over at Eles for an explanation, as if it wasn’t his own useless a** that brought them here last night.

Acid spewed from its suckers and spare droplets caught his skin. Eles woke with a start and a grunt, hand whipping out to seize the tentacle that struck him. It shifted and roiled in his grasp, as if offended, and the putrescent backdrop to the sordid scene sprouted a night sky and grasses. The tentacle was so pale that it was actually an arm. As he caught his breath, he realized to whom that arm belonged.

Without a word, he let go of that arm. Then he looked about quizzically until he remembered the sordid and scandalous manner by which they ended their evening. How they couldn't even make it through the gate and into the pool. Now the automatic sprinkler system gave them a vagrant shower as if to remind them of how naughty they'd been.

But, as he took stock of their surroundings, not all the evidences of their lasciviousness remained. He decided not to mention it.

Sighing and definitely wanting for some wine, Eles hauled himself to his feet. He picked out his underwear (which were actually his this time) from the piles of clothes and slipped them on with a touch of grimace, then held out his hand wordlessly to help up the injured boy. Who was looking at him like he didn't remember s**t.

And that might be a Problem. "Do you remember anything from last night?" He ventured.

Malory didn’t bother picking up his clothes, deciding that the single shirt, open and bereft of several buttons anyway, was enough to wear into the house. It was a little sad to lose nearly all of the outfit Eles had so thoughtfully picked out for him, but the even sadder fact was that it really wasn’t. He took the other boy’s hand, letting the other haul him up, and happily bumped into his arm and then Eles’s face for a good(ish) morning(ish) greeting after a night ill-spent.

“What’s there to remember?” He groused, knowing exactly what it was and why Eles would want to ask. “I think I only really saw the first twenty minutes of the thing. I really can’t take you anywhere I don't intend to be distracted.” Which was unfair, Eles was perfectly fine when he’d dragged him to classes. But maybe it was proximity that was the danger.

"Didn't mean the play," he replied with a roll of his eyes. But the boy was up, even if he was unsteady as ever, and Eles kept that hand close as he approached the gate. Opening it for the other boy, he followed afterward and shut the gate once more behind them.

Being that they were already covered in dirt, grass, and their own despicable impulses, Mal's staff would likely thank them for taking a swim first.

Looking back, he followed up. "Do you remember what we talked about or were you too distracted?"

“I don’t think I’ll ever forget your clever hand, but as for your clever mouth…” Malory let go of Eles’s hand, slipped out of the shirt, and said farewell to the entirety of that outfit. “Well I don’t think I could ever forget even the littlest bit of what you do with it or happen to say. No matter where my brains happen to spill out as a result.”

And then he was falling back into the water, letting the cool depths take him wholly, clearing out the pleasant fog of waking up next to his best boy. Coming back up, he asked, “Oh, do you mean how we talked about youma?”

Eles, less than pleased, watched Malory with increasing scrutiny while the boy gave in to his own whimsy. Gone and then back, his hair plastered to his face and neck and shoulders. Flecks of dirt and lawn clippings floated off of him and drifted steadily toward the filter at the back.

"No, not the youma. I need to know that you remember what came out of your clever mouth." Resigning himself to a long fight about it, Eles gave up on the idea of underwear and kicked them to the side, then entered the pool by the steps. Its chill was somewhat of a shock, but it chased away some of the bleariness from rousing out of a dead sleep. Courtesy of a well-moisturized palm to his left kidney, of course.

Smoothly slipping onto his back, Malory pushed himself in Eles’s direction. “I don’t say much worth remembering, do I?” As a rule, he tried to be less memorable for what he said than for how he looked at any given moment. Though of course, sliding so smoothly into his life, like a knife between the ribs, that didn’t necessarily apply to Eles, who pulled, inch by inch, a certain genuine existence out of Malory.

“There was the talk of cosmetic surgery, but I believe we both decided to just live with what we’re given.” At birth, or rebirth, or whenever someone sets themselves into our waiting hands. He smiled up at Eles, entirely too satisfied.

And that meant he, too, had to be tortured. A terrible, indivisible fate for them both.

"I'm talking about the conversation that immediately followed the plastic surgery one. The one about last names." He'd sunk down to his shoulders in the cool water, surrendered his breath to the firm embrace of the water.

“I think Eles Medraut is a little lacking, actually,” Malory finally admitted. “We’re going to have to get you a middle name from somewhere as well.” And then he slipped back down in the water, to make it easier for Eles to drown him if he saw fit. Even while under, he couldn’t help grinning, something in him feeling uncharacteristically fierce in its joy and greed.

A high-pitched whine went off in his head when Malory said the name was lacking. Like somewhere between intemperance and sobriety, Eles was measured once again and found wanting by the boy who could want for nothing. All feeling in him evaporated.

Until Malory clarified what he meant. Then he couldn't tell the difference between rancor and elation and quite quickly decided there was no meaningful difference. He was after that boy in a flurry of splashes and invective, leveraging all manner of threats against Malory's perfect face and his three devilish dogs, until he caught up to the b*****d in question to pull him under and finish the proposed drowning from last night.

He owed Malory at least that much, after all. His impulses decided for him that they had to share a little oxygen about it, too.

Drowning for and with his boy, the joy and irritation for his teasing clear in the hands that sought him out, Malory couldn’t help the laugh that shuddered into the other boy’s mouth. Eventually, they decided to live with their choices and resurfaced, Malory still laughing. He almost let out that he never forgot when he was drunk, rarely actually forgot anything at all. Unless it was too unpleasant to have happened. But he held it back, head clear enough to allow himself at least some little lies for the future.

The future. Something he rarely bothered with for himself, outside of the next role. The next person, for however briefly they lasted. And when it came to Eles, that future hadn’t really been worth the risk of thinking about. It wouldn’t belong to him.

Faustite would wake up. And go back to his former life. Hopefully he wouldn’t hold any strange grudges against Malory. And maybe he’d visit.

It was, in all begrudging honestly, an incredibly empty future. So there was no need to think about it with any sort of depth or sense of commitment. It was the smart thing to do, and the best way to protect himself. He was, after all, a tried and true coward in every way.

But even Malory would admit that he was also a fool. And sometimes he was fool enough for something that maybe he was willing to be, just a little, brave in the most foolish, selfish ways possible. And sometimes, when he should be hesitating and scared, he found himself instead thrilled and giddy and intensely happy.

He’d found in Eles his almost perpetual sometimes.

“We’re going to get married,” he stated, for once simple and outright, like he was scrawling the words across another paper lantern. Telling reality what it needed to be.

Those few moments underwater were like another world — one where there was no past, no future, nothing else but them and the expanding surfeit of wants that so compellingly kept them together. But that world was as ephemeral as their breath, and when they surfaced, Malory dropped the game enough to acknowledge it. At first, Eles could say nothing, for no word in any language could bear more honor than a silence shared.

They could have such beautiful fun. Fun that didn't rely on whoever he used to be, or however he came to be. His future wasn't predicated on the past. Their relationship with each other wasn't predicated on it, either.

Eles warmed to the Malory that was right in front of him, right now. Not those other dozen versions of him, each painted meticulously and framed on a wall. Whatever happened between those paintings and now was all forgivable — murder, arson, treachery, cowardice — because all of it culminated into the boy that existed before him. A boy that, he decided, was worth a last name at the least.

Eles raised three fingers, which came to the surface in a small eruption of disturbed water. "Black. Verdigris. Tarnished gold." He smiled. "What do you think? We'll look like dead kings."

They could be anything. Who was going to tell them no?

“Your taste in weddings is so much more promising than your taste in clothes,” Malory laughed. Taking that hand he raised another finger for Eles, “Let’s make everyone but us wear masks.” Dramatic. Potentially obnoxious. Potentially causing guests problems.

Raising his boy’s thumb, he added, “Let’s get a mausoleum, just for us.” Teeth flashing in a grin, he raised that opened hand, palm up, to his mouth. “Call it our winter home.” A thought beyond all the ‘til deaths.

And despite all their grim and morbid delight in it, the future suddenly felt so amazingly bright. Blindingly so.

"Well ********, I tried to tell you." Eles leveled a sassy look at him. "Was thinking of it more like a painting than clothes." However, Malory would look hauntingly beautiful if painted into mourning veils and funerary adornments. All scepter and crown, immortal in his mortality.

Though, he was pleasantly surprised at the suggestion. "Like a masquerade party?" He could imagine it — something grandiose, champagne flowing, snacks everlasting, all that expensive s**t that people say tastes good but everyone has to stay masked to be allowed in the party. Let there be guessing games about who was behind which mask, all tied to some overwrought poetics. Make them talk to each other for the clues. See which rivalries are suddenly second-guessed and which romances are suddenly shattered when the masks come off at once.

A delightful idea. Aesthetic, too. Eles nodded.

"Could have one built, too. Do it up in the image of those extravagant, ruined ones in Budapest. All that overgrown vegetation to chase people away. Oh, we could get some luxurious coffins, too. With ventilation." He thought, briefly, about suggesting they make the bodies of their enemies into chandeliers, but there would be time to expand on the design. Besides, The Medraut Mausoleum has good consonance.

"Come on," and Eles slipped his hand from his boy's grasp to urge him toward the pool stairs. "That's too much s**t to keep in our heads. Need to write it out."

Pulled back out into the actual world, one that consisted of more than two people for the second time that night, Malory found the transition a little less jarring. Even if he did hear Sanya’s voice gruffly commenting in the distance, the absolutely derogatory Russian likely aimed at his pile of clothes on the lawn.

Briefly, smiling, he pressed his face into Eles’s shoulder. “It’s going to be a stupidly huge wedding, full of people we don’t like, mixed in with a few we do.”

As they entered the house, naked and still dripping with Angelica starting on the day’s breads and peering at them through the kitchen door, “Let’s get black swans.”

They were going to get married. And it was going to be fun.
