They were age 10 when they first met in school.
They were both 16 the summer when they first started dating.
They were 24 when Sara finally popped the question last year on August 4th, 2024 after practically a whole year of anxiety and anticipation.
And they were 25 when the engaged couple finally moved to Destiny City on May 4th, 2025 from Japan to live together while attending Destiny City University as they had planned.
As Ginyami sat in their small, enclosed, internal Japanese-style garden surrounded by their home, he looked around casually. The place had a mixed style of both modern and traditional Japanese features and furniture. Plants that were safe for cats to be around and hypoallergenic so that they were safe for Sara to be around could be found everywhere indoors, but outdoors was where he truly found fresh air. It allowed him to clear his head and think after a long, busy week.
That weekend afternoon had him thinking fondly of his fiancé and how long it had taken Sara to propose. Ginyami would have done it ages ago himself, but he knew it was important to Sara and he didn't want to rush things for his partner. Furthermore, if Ginyami had been the one to propose, there was the very real danger of the people-pleasing Sara ending up feeling pressured to say yes to him before he felt ready to, so Ginyami had refrained from doing so. He knew the business of officially getting married was a much bigger deal to his boyfriend than himself anyway, especially because he practically felt married to him already, so he didn't mind waiting however long he needed to.
Nine years. Nine years they had been together as a couple and they'd known each other for 15. It was wild to think about. Sure, they'd had their ups and downs and had even broken up at least once, but they had managed to get through it all eventually together and managed to ensure their bond had become stronger than ever. How had two people who were so completely different from each other become so close?
Well, I suppose they do say opposites attract, he thought, lighting a cigarette to smoke as he gazed at the greenery before him with narrow eyes. Who would have guessed that Sara Kohana, who was so tall, burly, and intimidating-looking with a sharp-featured, angry-seeming fierce default face was actually a chronic worrier, cripplingly shy, gentle, overly-considerate, excessively kind? And that his metrosexual partner, Ginyami Midorimori, who was smiling, friendly, slim - perhaps even to the point of being considered feminine in certain aspects - and a little over half a foot shorter than Sara was actually selfish, possessive, arrogant, proud, and vindictive? One seemed anti-social but loved most people whereas the other seemed social and could behave accordingly, but secretly loathed most people. They complimented each other in many ways as each others' foils and looked out for one another in their own ways.
Smiling at the thought of how even just Sara's presence at a club or bar would keep people away from him, Ginyami sighed blissfully. Then he laughed at the idea of how he himself could shoo others away from Sara with a glance. They had gone through a lot to get to the point that they had come to with their bond and it wasn't about to be broken easily. He would have liked to see anyone even try to get between them, but perhaps he would now that they were in a new place with an entirely different culture that had different rules. America was so very different from Japan, after all. There were plenty of bold people who wouldn't have minded openly trying to steal someone from someone else in a committed relationship, even just because they could; plenty of brazen homewreckers and trophy-seeking thieves. There were also a multitude of gorgeous, charming, and charismatic people abound. And yet...instead of feeling daunted, Yami couldn't help feeling...what was the word...invigorated?
His smile spread slowly across his face as he breathed out a stream of smoke. Yes, he thought. Opposites attract. Just like magnets. Perhaps this new life may test us and our relationship...but what doesn't kill it will make it stronger. As our obstacles and challenges always have.
