Anyone can join in, regardless of whether they have a cert. 3. How many prizes can I win? You can win 1 prize from this event! A chief’s work is never done, and good ocean’s breath did Fiti never feel that more than now! Despite being heavily pregnant and ready to pop at any given moment, and against the pleas of her worried mate and Ho’olas she had decided to push forward with hosting the annual Pelekee herself. To delay it risked the wrath of the ravenous Child of Fire and a large tantrum by her without her offering to keep her satisfied. Delegating the task to someone else was out of the question for her. It was her duty as chief to oversee the celebrations and ritual. If she couldn’t push through pregnancy and oversee the Nani’kais’ first Pelekee since the tsunami, then what kind of confidence would that instill in her colony in her abilities? No, through waddles and all, she would be doing this. Ocean Mother, bless her with patience and the energy to get through today with no issues. “Aloha!” Te’Fiti shouted with a smile as she addressed the growing crowd before her. The sun had barely started to rise above the horizon, but already the excitement in the air was electric. People had been looking forward to this event as it was the first of its kind since many had decided to make the Nani’Kai their home. Te’Fiti had sent scouts far and wide to spread the news about the event and drum up interest in neighboring colonies with an open invitation. This would be as much of a strengthening ritual for the volcano goddess as it would be connections amongst the colony - and beyond! “Thank you for joining us on this important day. Today, we will be honoring our beloved fire child with gifts for her for another year of safety and calm tidings from her. How will we do that, you might ask?” She paused, taking a step forward to gesture to the woven baskets that lined the beaches, each large enough for almost an adult to sit comfortably in. “That is where you will come in. Throughout the day, we will host a fishing contest for anyone to join in on. Do your best to catch your biggest hauls from the sea and bring them back here to the beach to be counted and logged by our judges.” She nodded at the row of impartial judges lined up on the sideline - including her own children and mate - ready to start counting up and tallying each hunter’s catches throughout the day. “Normally, the three best hunters would be named Wiwio'ole Lawai’a and enjoy bragging rights for the next year. However, this year we find ourselves with special openings within our ranks. Whoever brings the most catches and is declared the winner will become one of my council members and will be from this day forth a Lawai’a-Alaka’i.” Te’Fiti grinned impishly as an audible gasp and roar of excitement rose from the crowd. Perfect, just the reaction she was hoping for. Now they had some fire lit in their bellies to do their best. “While our hunters are in the water we will be hosting another contest here on the beach,” Te’Fiti continued as she slowly waddled over to the dance contest arena. The sand had been stamped down earlier in the week for easier movement for the performers. While food stalls were filled with pre-prepared meats, fruits, and other treats. As well, rock basins had been pushed to the sides to allow easy access to fresh water. “A dance contest for our best performers will be held for entertainment. I will be the judge of the final winner of the contest, so please, dance till you drop!” Beaming a smile of encouragement, she turned to face the crowd full-on once more. “For everyone not participating in our contests, please enjoy the festivities! Our food and drink are open to all. Have a wonderful time, and feel free to address any concerns with me or one of the guards.” Now that the formalities are out of the way and everything had been explained. The fun could truly begin. Sucking in a deep breath, Te’Fiti braced herself as she raised her voice to the loudest it could go. “CONTESTANTS! ARE YOU READY?” She shouted, pausing to get a roar of encouragement back from everyone eager to begin. “THEN MAY THE OCEAN MOTHER BLESS YOU. HAPPY HUNTING!”

Kainoa wasn't usually one for big crowds but he'd heard there was going to be a fishing contest and he was excited to try. He'd been practicing his technique throughout the week when he wasn't busy with his small tattoo shop. His son Kawika had been practicing with him as well, though he seemed more interested in the dancing contest that was said to be taking place. As he made his way to the beach, he was met with many "alohas" as he passed by. He wasn't a big fan of the way sand felt between his paw pads, but that's the price to pay to live in the Nani'Kai. He looked around at all the other Ma'ome who were enjoying the ono, delicious smelling food, and as the chief made her way to the front of the throng and began her speech, he stopped to listen. His son Kawika found him in the crowd and ran up to him. "Aloha Papa!" He approached and touched his forehead to Kainoa's in a short honi ihu. "Good luck today! May the Ocean be bountiful upon you!" Kawika was too eager to start dancing and ran off to join his siblings near the dancing ring. Kainoa smiled after him, looking for his other children in the crowd, waving a paw at them. They'd all grown up and were making their own place in the colony so he didn't see them all the time any more. He cheered a loud "Chee Hoo!" when Te Fiti mentioned the fishing contest. He was excited to get started. It seemed like it was going to be fun. There were a few other Ma'ome who looked like they were ready to get in the water as well. Once Te Fiti finished her speech, he sprinted to the water's edge, eyes darting back and forth trying to catch a glimpse of a fish. I'm hunting!Points this round: 5 Total points thus far: 5

Noemi noticed others with vibrant colors and interesting markings going through to the beach. She watched with curious eyes from a distance but found herself coming closer as shouting started. The idea of dancing and learning more about what was happening drew her even closer. She cautiously approached the beach quietly. She didn't want to draw attention to herself despite being an outsider. A soft colored ma'ome caught her eyes on the beach. "Excuse me" She was soft spoken but hoped that she could be heard without raising her voice. I'm the Dancing Queen!Points this round: 6 Total points thus far: 6

.jpg) Finally, it was time for the Pelekee! When he was a young cub in the Nani’Kai he remembered the grand Pelekees with hundreds of hunters dotting the ocean while the heavy crowd cheered for the performers on the shore. Of course, back then it was strictly Nani’kai only. Outsiders were attacked on sight back in those days unless coming to offer service to the colony. In the days of old, the ritual was not only to strengthen the Fire Child but also to rally the warriors for the upcoming war campaign season. The colony had sure grown and changed since he was a child. The tsunami, while a tragedy, in his mind had been a blessing from the Ocean Mother as it washed away the bloodthirsty values of old to make way for a new, peaceful way of life. His chest swelled with pride at the thought of how far they had come in just a short time and the bright future that lay ahead. “CHEEEEEEEEEEEEE HOOOOOO!” He screamed out, tossing his head back in exuberance as he shouted with his full chest. His feet stomped below him into the soft sand, drumming to his own internal beat with a rhymical thunk. “May the Mother Bless!” He called out in encouragement to all of those running past him into the sea. Ah, he dearly wished he could join them this year. His muscles ached to feel the burn of a battle well fought, even if it was just with fish. Alas, duty called. His place was here on the beach, being one of the officiators to count and tally the catch of the contestants and to keep a watchful eye over the event to ensure everything went smoothly today. For now, he would watch and wait, and see if anyone needed any assistance until the first hunters returned with their hauls. (Feel free for anyone to interact to start themselves off!)

Visiting the Nani'Kai at this time seemed to have tossed Mihra into some kind of celebration! The young ma'ome was careful to listen to the excited chattering of the colony members and any visitors who knew what was happening. It sounded not only important to the colony, but also a lot of fun. She'd been visiting on and off with the Nani'Kai long enough that she had picked up some of their knowledge and mannerisms, but hearing about the events they held was different than actually experiencing them. Mihra couldn't help but smile at the sight of Te'Fiti, diligently leading despite looking like her cubs could be born at any second. She got the already ecstatic crowd roaring, and even Mihra joined in. She didn't really know much about fishing, but she knew how to dance! At least, she liked to think so. It was a lot of fun trying, either way, and she had youthful energy on her side! The young haole was delighted to see ma'ome her own age participating in the dance contest as well. Perhaps she could make some friends during the festivities, and if not, a little friendly rivalry couldn't hurt. I'm the Dancing Queen!Points this round: 7 Total points thus far: 7

After doing well on his first round of fishing, Kainoa got distracted by something shiny, thinking it was a fish but it turned out to just be a shiny rock. He missed a couple rounds but was ready to get back to it. This time he caught a mouthful of fish. Happy with his bounty, he returned to the shore and laid them in the pile with the other fish, eager to get back out there and try again. I'm hunting!Points this round: 5 Total points thus far: 10

Kawika was lost in his dancing and barely heard the quiet female. He paused, "Oh hi! Are you here to dance?!" he called to her over the music that was playing. "It's so fun!" He started dancing again, moving all four paws to the music.

He wiped a paw across his forehead, swiping off a bit of water that had splashed as he had caught the last few fish. He searched the water for that telling flash of light that meant a fish was just beneath the surface. He lunged, but this time all he got was a mouthful of water. He stood back up, shook the water off, blinking his eyes til he could see again and was ready to try again. I'm hunting!Points this round: 0 Total points thus far: 10

Mihra was feeling the music, enjoying the rhythms and letting her paws move to them naturally, letting whatever felt right come to her. She was smiling and didn't even notice, this was going to be a lot of fun. "Come join us! It's much more fun to dance together." Oh, was that for her? She flicked her ear, then looked at the direction of the greeting. One of the ma'ome her age was saying hello! He looked like a Nani'Kai member, and there appeared to be another haole nearby, too. "Yeah, okay!" She moved her paws in her dance to shuffle towards them, giggling. I'm the Dancing Queen!Points this round: 8 Total points thus far: 15
