Quote:
The snow is glistening, the wind is not biting, and you're enjoying yourself this winter season. Then something strange happens: you see a glimmer in the air, as if it's a haze. You approach it in whatever manner best suits you, and you eventually walk into it. When you enter the haze, you begin to realize that you're starting to feel drowsy, and you doze off in a deep slumber. While asleep, you find yourself living a day of your life in one of the events from the last 20 years. You may roll from the provided list or pick one at random. The choice is yours. What do they do while they're experiencing this phenomenon? Are they excited, scared, or merely a shock-and-awe moment?

Snow lay delicately across the cemetery, catching the moonlight in a way that gave everything an eerie yet serene glow. Even this place of death seemed almost forgiving. The wind danced through the headstones, like a headless ghost, swirling white dust in the air. Draygan the Deathless stood there, almost calmed by the quiet of winter. He leans against a mausoleum, watching the silence.

That was when he noticed the haze. The wind took on more of a blurry sheen and began moving unpredictably. Draygan's eyes formed thin slits as he watched. He didn't move from the wall, nor look alarmed as the haze floated towards him. Years of living left him not surprised by much of anything anymore.

The haze stopped before him, and his head grew heavy. "So this is how it's to be." he spoke under his breath, as the haze vibrated around him. It pulled him into a sleep, for which he didn't fight. He gave in to it and drifted off while still leaning against the wall.

The sleep pulled him into a dream. A dream where a great hall loomed before him. On a table were two masks. Though there were two, he knew which was his without any doubt. A black mask with intricate curls, and a beaded red tear that hung below one eye. The red gem hung there, taunting him. Resigning to wear the mask, he leaned over. The next thing he knew, it was already nestled on his face.

In the Winter Masquerade, the Queen had cursed all who wore the masks. Here in the dream, it is the same. Once the mask is on, you forget who you are. Draygan stood there in regalia fit for a dance, and for the first time in a long while, he smiled. A forgotten past, not so much a curse as a welcome respite from that which plagues him. A vampire might not know he is a vampire. A killer, though one from long ago, might be innocent. Just a stallion, out to dance, and be someone he hasn't been in a long, long time.

Anastasia startled from her dreamless sleep, bleary eyes looking around as she came to her senses. The muffled silence surrounding her slowed her pulse. She wasn’t sure what brought her from sleep, only that now she was fully awake. A sigh escaped her in a cloud of condensation, suspended in the air before dissipating.

The wind picked up and had her shuddering, blinking snowflakes from her lashes when a bright light winked into existence. “What…?” She breathed out even as her hooves carried her forward as if in a trance.
Cautiously, she stepped forward, a burning curiosity keeping her going before the light seemed to swallow her up. Encompassed, comforting warmth spread through her and her thoughts grew sluggish, eyelids fluttered shut and before she knew, Ana was waking up - again.

This time she knew she was dreaming. A haze blurred the edges of her vision, and as she stepped forward, a hall with marbled floors and intricate walls materialized the moment a hoof touched. An ornate table drew her attention from her surroundings and she approached the single mask, dipping her face to it, only to have the black lace sit delicately against her skin.

A delighted gasp escaped her as memories and worries are wiped away, leaving unbridled elation and wonder in its wake.
This was a ball, after all, and so with a flourish of lace and ruffles she spun into the throng of faceless partygoers.

Draygan stepped into the crowded lavish ballroom filled with masked guests. The room feels like a dream within the dream, where time escapes all. Crystal chandeliers with candles that send shimmering light on all below. Curled staircases large enough for equine sized guests frame the flow of dancers. All who dance appear to float effortlessly in waves of gentle motion, to mirror the elegant attire they wear. It has a polished beauty, like looking at the world through a crystal ball.

Draygan goes to the stairs. Standing beside them, he leans a shoulder on the banister. The dream curse could take away all that he remembered, but his muscles still recalled the stance he prefers. He watches those around him, enjoying the show, rather than participating.

Then he sees her. One of the guests catch his eye. He watches, as she takes in the ballroom. Something about her is different in this sea of chiffon and silk.

Ana spun and swayed across the marble to the ebb and flow of the symphony that filled the air. Laughter bubbled from her lips as she waltzed, deciding to embrace the excitement coursing through her. Jewels glittered, satin shimmered, and the room seemed to pulse with an energy that fed it all.

It was on a turn that she felt her skin prickle with awareness, her movements slowing as her eyes scanned the crowd a bit closer. The feeling grew until she stopped all together, her gaze connecting with the piercing red through the black mask, her eyes flitting briefly to the ruby tear before meeting the stallions intense stare.

Ana's eyes widened behind her mask, lungs working to pull air in short puffs while she took in the stranger. Should she know him? She wasn't sure - but a smile tugged the corners of her lips anyway. "Hello."

Draygon watched her dance. All the other partygoers seemed to fade away. There was only her. He watched as she smiled and twirled, gliding across the floor as though the marble itself wished to carry her. Something deep within him stirred—not knowing her but feeling as he should, a pull without reason. Before he quite realized it, his weight shifted from the banister, and his hooves carried him forward.

He stopped a polite distance away, the music swelling between them. He gave her a devilish grin as she finally noticed him. The red gem beneath his eye caught the candlelight as he inclined his head. “Good evening,” he said, his voice smooth, practiced, like a line he had spoken a thousand times before and forgotten just as often. “Would you honor me with a dance?” he said with a bow of his head. His eyes looked up at her as his head remained lowered, waiting for her answer.

Ana’s eyes glittered behind her mask as she took in this mystery stallion. It wasn’t lost on her that he was the sole attendee that was thrown into focus. The others remained faceless - she wasn’t sure what that meant but before she could think on it further he was asking her to dance. His voice was almost a physical presence, the timbre causing an involuntary shiver to run through her.
Elation and surprise had her cheeks flushing further, she inclined her own head delicately, keeping her gaze on his. There was something here, a charge, a connection that she couldn’t, or rather, didn’t want to walk away from. “I would be delighted, Mr…?” She left off, inviting him to tell her his name, her voice pitched just enough to be heard over the lilting music.

He watched as her green eyes assessed him, and from what he could tell, approved. Curls cascaded around her as she dipped her head to him. A strong urge came over him to brush them from her face.

Draygon’s grin deepened, something playful and faintly dangerous curling at the corners of his mouth. For a brief moment, the question snagged on something unseen, tugging at a thread he did not quite remember owning. A name. Yes—he was meant to have one. The dream pressed gently against him, smoothing the hesitation away.

“Tonight,” he said softly, straightening as he offered her to join him at his side, “I believe names are terribly overrated.” His eyes flicked briefly to the masks around them, to the faceless dancers drifting past like living silk. “But if you insist… you may call me Draygon.”

The name felt right on his tongue, even if he could not say why.

He swept her onto the dancefloor, careful and unhurried, allowing the music to choose the pace. “And you?” he asked, voice lowered now, meant only for her. “May I know the name of the mare who’s stolen the room from me?”

“Draygon…”She willed herself to commit it to memory - though mostly her head seemed blissfully empty. A surprised laugh had her tossing her curls in delight as she joined him. “If they’re over rated, whatever name would I call if we are separated?” Mirth had her feeling incredibly light in his presence as they seemed to glide across the floor to join the dance.

Bewilderment had her smile flickering before it was replaced as she searched for her name. “I…is it Ann? Anya?” She let her confusion wash away with the music that seemed to seep into her being. “Forgive me, I fear you may be correct and names are indeed not needed.” Ana fluttered her lashes at his attention, matching her strides to his, the dancers seeming to swallow them into the fold, her focus now on Draygon and his commanding presence. She was less inclined to share her attention, captivated with the piercing eyes that seemed luminous.

The two slid across the floor. The dancers around them part as they move. As if only they matter. The dream frames them like they are on a stage for all in the ballroom to see. Where there should have been a king and queen, only they remained the stars of the ball.

As she flutters her lashes, trying to recall her name, it does something to him. The desire to know not only her name, but who she is. What she's like. What makes her smile? He'd do anything to make her smile. A bold emotion that has his head spinning. Something in him craves her. He leans in, so close, taking in her scent. He whispers in her ear, "Then I shall call you mine, till the dance is over."

Heat, that has nothing to do with the dance, licks through her entirety at his closeness. Her ear twitches, the delicate brush of his words sending a shiver through her that only seemed to have her flushing more.
She finds herself slowing until she’s still, feeling in this moment that they’re the only ones in existence. Ana tilts her chin up, ever so slightly to see him better. “Yours?” His words send her heart into a gallop, the masks making her feel emboldened…after all, this was her dream, right?
She leaned up, sharing his breath as hers quickened. “Only until it’s over?”
Ana found she really wanted to know the answer, but then what? When it was over…she found she didn’t really care to think on it. “And if I am yours, are you Mine?”

Even though Draygan stopped with her, it felt like the world continued to spin and whirl around them. They stood in the middle of everything, timeless, caught in the dream. A force pushed them closer together. Perhaps his will, and maybe even hers. Where she had heat and warmth, he felt drawn to it. A tingle that snaked under his skin. Filling him with excitement to watch her flush, standing beneath him. Outside the dream, he would fear this proximity. Here, he is emboldened by it. His breath catches as she leans in close. A smug smile lifts to one side, causing the red tear to glimmer. "My dear, I was yours from the moment you stepped into the ballroom."

"Anastasia." She breathed, afraid to disturb the magic (for surely that must be what surrounds them) of their dream, her name tumbling from her in a rush. Her gaze flickers to the ruby droplet, then his smirking mouth that sends her belly fluttering before returning it, her own lips pulling to a smile. "You can call me Ana, though."
Brazenly she closes the distance, but leans slightly to the left, pressing a shy peck to the ornate swirls that decorated his cheek, under the ruby tear. Nerves have her stepping back quickly and ducking her head, her curls falling forward but doing nothing to hide the grin fighting for its place despite herself.

Everything in his world seemed to boil down to this very moment. "Anastasia" he says her name, committing it to memory, savoring the sound of it on his tongue.

He holds his breath as she reaches up to him. So sure she's going in for a kiss and he would absolutely let her. His breath hitches as she leans to the side, and presses the most ginger kiss to his cheek. A flutter of her gentle, soft lips that is gone after a beat of his racing heart.

The kiss anchors him and damns him.

As she pulls away, a veil on the dream seems to lift. The dream isn't over, but he can feel its pull. Everything around them slowly starts to dim.

"No." Draygan says, not to her, but to the world around them. Things flicker like the fragile dew on grass as the sun starts to rise, knowing its time is short. "Please. I don't want it to be over. Stay with me just a little while longer." he says to Ana.

Fear lances through her, a physical jolt that pierces her heart. The song is melting away, the setting bleeding from existence before her eyes. “I’m not ready to say goodbye.”
Panic has tears pooling in her eyes as she moves closer again, missing his presence in her space and not knowing if he’s real but believing that he has to be. “Find me. Promise!” Her ears lay back as she hastily looks about, realizing all that’s left is the table and a strange stallion with a grim set to his features. He opens his mouth but she doesn’t hear his words so much as feels them. “You’re not supposed to be here. Times up.”

Gasping into the darkness Ana jolts to alertness once more. She’s greeted by the orange glow of the raising sun, turning the snow to pools of coral and yellow. Her eyes sting and she realizes she’s sobbing, her breathing coming in ragged gulps. There’s a gaping emptiness in her heart that has her choking back raw longing. “What…?”
