Stepping with a quiet reverence the pale stallion moved further towards their families most well kept shrine. Despite the frigid temperature the ground had been swept clean..Sia had made sure of it.
Taking a slow even breath he started placing mementos of his travels around the shrine, smiling faintly at a little lock of hair. Heat rose to the stallions cheeks..the last new year he’d stood right here and asked to find love. To find a companion for life; a twin flame. A soul to mingle with his own for all eternity.
Now that the year was renewing again he felt the same warm fluttering of his heart. ”Thank you for guiding him to me..for making our paths cross. He is truly beautiful. Intelligent..”
Once more the familiar flush came to his pale cheeks, head lowering in a gracious bow. The stars above had been gradually filling the darkness; a gorgeous glow skittering lights across the snow.
After giving thanks for the past year Sia pulled a small pouch out to drop more treasures on the ground. Eyes brightening alongside the starry sky. ”It is almost time for the new year. I humbly offer these gifts to you and to my ancestors. Please bless this new year..b-bless..my beloved one. Perhaps..with foals of our own?”
Heart skipping a beat Sia gently nosed the lock of hair..imagining it. What this new year could hold; the possibilities were endless. ”I will continue to do my duties with grace. I will let the spirits guide me..please protect us. Protect my family.”

Clawed feet moving easily across the snow the pale mare could just catch her brother’s last words. Ears flickering she hesitated a beat..two..then made her presence known. Clearing her throat Awahi saw the exact instant Sia realized he was not alone on this new years. ”Brother? I hope I’m not interrupting.”
Eyes glowing she moved nearer, pleased to see Sia looking so well. Not injured or scarred up..healthy and happy even? Wonderful. Her own whispered wishes to the stars had been answered. ”Oh my dearest brother, you look well.”
It was a touch unexpected when Sia dove closer to nuzzle her but, she welcomed it with the softest giggle. Indulging her little brother with a fond hum. Nose ruffling his mane, teeth giving a light n** to one pale white ear. ”Now now..big sister is here. I travelled a great distance to see you, I even remembered the tradition!”
Eager as ever she moved to place her own offering to the ancestors. Grinning when freshly dried tea leaves poured free. Mixing with Sia’s own lovely gifts. ”I bring tea leaves from my new family; from my mate and his lovely herd. May the new year bring us new children..may we have no trouble on our extensive travels.”
Voice soft and reverent Awahi used a claw to brush the new offerings. Lips quirking into a grin when she spied the lock of hair. ”What is this Sia? From someone special?”

Laughing Sia felt his heart practically singing with joy when he saw his sister. Many questions buzzed through his mind but, it was all forgotten when she spoke up. ”O-oh. Well..yes actually.”
Trying to avoid his sister’s growing smile and keen eyes he bent to straighten things up, taking a minute to gather his thoughts. ”He is my everything..my new beginning. I hope one day to have a family with him..” Awahi’s bright squeal made him groan in reply, ears flicking as she asked a million more questions. ”I’m truly happy we could meet like this before the new year comes. That’s also way too many questions; stay for a few days and I’ll take you to meet him.”
The excited energy was tamed..mostly. Relieved Sia looked back to the stars, happiness..dreams of the future. Expression softening further he nuzzled his sister and hummed. ”We welcome the new year. A year of possibilities. May those that are not with us feel our love and joy. May our dear ancestors continue to bless us on our journeys. Happy new year Awahi.”

The pair stood side by side in the biting cold basking in the love, the familiar family bond seeming to envelope them.
As the sun started to rise they greeted it in the same position, Awahi with a delighted laugh and Sia with a respectful bow. They’d made it through another year..their family might be scattered but it was still felt in that moment.
Those not in attendance were remembered. Their ancestors were remembered. ”Thank you for another year of life and for leading my sister home. I don’t know about you sister but I’m exhausted. Shall we go find a warm spot to bed down? I’m sure one of dad’s nests is around here somewhere.”
