Vice Captain

We have a few people in this RP who have very little, if any, experience roleplaying on gaia. So, in theory, their posts may not be as good of quality as some of the rest may be. Now, assuming I do end up making this RP into a novel, the fluctuations in degrees regarding the skillful execution of each post is not something that would do well in a novel. Therefore, I've created this; a newcomer's practice RP.

In hopes to raise the RPing skill of any participant of the RP who wishes to partake in this, this thread will serve as a simple "tutorial" of sorts. Please note that any posts you submit in here may be subject to criticism by any of the Vice Captains.

The way this works is rather simple. I, or another Vice Captain, will post an in-character roleplaying-style paragraph or set of paragraphs. It is encouraged that any who deem it necessary that they practice can then reply, without needing to post a profile for their character, or any other typically standard "beginning-an-rp" rules. You just reply, and then someone else replies - the same concept as in a regular RP.

Also, anyone replying may, if they so desire, criticize someone else's post lightly. No flaming, no condescending attitudes, and no preaching your own abilities. This is meant to help newcomers, not lower their morales.

If you feel you know enough about roleplaying, and only need practice on doing so, then skip the next few posts. They describe advice I find may be useful.

(This post and those that follow contain guidelines, not concrete rules! They are my personal suggestios and beliefs, you choose whether or not to follow them. And I would appreciate any concerns or any disagreements to be told to me, in case I can fix it.)
A few of the basics:
- Posts in the RP should be in past-tense.
- Your own posts should not directly dictate the actions of other characters.
- Your Roleplaying character does not always need to stick with the same appearance or personality all-thoughout. That does NOT mean that you can act however you want all the time - posts should follow the personality description you included with your profile. It is, possible, that certain events may have a dramatic effect on your character, and as such that event may influence their way of thinking, or have similar effects on them. As for appearance, it is preferrable that you keep your character looking the same the whole time (they can change clothes, though), although it is perfectly possible for you to change hair color, eye color, height, weight, and muscle mass through magic. Those effects are all temporary.
- Your characters are not gods. They are skilled, but not invicible. Attacks can hit them, and can affect them. That does not mean every attack hits them, as dodging most melee attacks is a simple matter of reaction time. And, your reaction time should be suitable for whichever profession your character has adopted.
- Your characters do not know as much as you do. They know what they are told in the confines of the RP, and should act accordingly.
- Your characters are as smart as you are, or as otherwise deemed by you.
- Chances are your character grew up with a comparatively normal life. So, they each have fears and goals, strengths and weaknesses.
- Eberron still has laws. If you disobey the laws, you'll suffer the consequences.
- Anything you can think of, you can try. This does not indicate that it will work. Likewise, be prepared for NPCs and villains to do what they can to avoid detection and the foiling of their plans.

Some things to take note of:
I like making things complicated and enjoy seeing the players work for and earn their discoveries. Take this to mind when you're in my Roleplays. Not everything is going to be easy. If you can, try to think the way I do. blaugh You might be able to get a head-start on what's going to happen before everyone else.

Ultimately, the story and end result are decided by me. Side-stories and your characters' personal backgrounds are your own creations, and you can feel free to implement them into the story as you see fit. World events and historic recognition are not yours to decide, however.

I set you down a path. It is your choice whether or not to follow it. Eberron is an open world, and everyone there has free will. Which means, obviously, that you can set out and do your own thing if you want...but be prepared for an appropriate reaction from me and my NPCs. Chances are if I give you a clue as to where to go, it's a good idea to go there. But that's not always the case...

If I find I can, I might play tricks on you. My NPCs are as silver-tongued and cunning as I am. XD Your suspicions are your own to formulate and act upon.

Character Development is key:
As often as you see a need for it, include background information and insight into your character. It adds realism to them, and increases the enjoyment while reading posts/a book.

Like I said before, some events may change the way your character thinks or acts. Don't forgot, though, that that may mean they suffer from a mental illness if they've witnessed something traumatic. Insanity could be interesting, and in a world with magic, is perfectly curable with the proper tools. (Just in case you, at first, choose to have effects of insanity, but later decide you no longer desire them).

Characters need not always be mundane. Soveliss, for example, is a psychopath. That provides a reader with what I hope is a different point of view, and allows myself to use creative license and imagination to convey what Soveliss feels...or what he doesn't feel. So, in short, feel free to give your character a distinguishing personality or even physical trait. Make things interesting.

And lastly, greed might be a common factor among adventurers. Generally, characters with chaotic natures would be out for themselves and those closest to them, while anyone leaning towards lawful would instead look out for all of their comrades. Another possibility is feigning interest in protecting your comrades while instead only be manipulating them to exploit their strengths and improve your own reputation or wealth.

Description: Too much or too Little?
Description, more often than not, adds realism to the environment your characters are in, as well as their actions, reactions, and so on. It is a useful tool for expanding posts, adding personal details and thoughts, as well as possibly foreshadowing future actions by the character. This may raise a question. How much is too much?

Normally, description should go as far as your imagination. Try to describe a vivd image for the reader. That doesn't mean describe every single meticulous detail down to the very last wrinkle of leather in your character's left boot, be reasonable with it. Also, too much description may give away too much information, if you are trying to conceal something. Whereas giving just enough of a clue to attract attention to it can be fun, giving away a plot twist too soon can ruin the moment.

Too little may also be hard to determine. There are times when a simple three-line response would be enough of a reply. And there are situations where a three-paragraph reply is more appropriate. Your judgment dictates what should be done when, not mine. However, if you are in an encounter with someone or something, it's usually best to have a slight degree more detail than what is perhaps normal. Using the above example, I would say a fight is deserving of a two-or-three paragraph response (this is not always the case, remember that!).

The Nine Alignments
There are a total of nine possible combinations of "alignments" characters can have. And here they are:

Lawful Good Lawful Neutral Lawful Evil
Neutral Good True Neutral Neutral Evil
Chaotic Good Chaotic Neutral Chaotic Evil

"Law" implies honor, trustworthiness, obedience to authority, and reliability. On the downside, law can include closemindedness, reactionary adherence to tradition, judgmentalness, and lack of adaptability.
"Chaos" implies freedom, adaptability, and flexibility. On the downside, chaos can include recklessness, resentment toward legitimate authority, arbitrary actions, and irresponsibility.
"Good" implies altruism, respect for life, and a concern for the dignity of sentient beings. Good characters make personal sacrifices to help others.
"Evil" implies hurting, oppressing, and killing others. Some evil creatures simply have no compassion for others and kill without qualms if doing so is convenient. Others actively pursue evil, killing for sport or out of duty for some evil deity.
Neutral parties respect both good and evil and have compunctions against killing the innocent but lack the commitment to make sacrifices to help others. Neutral people are committed to others through personal relationships. A neutral person may sacrifice himself to save his family or even his homeland, but would not do so for someone he did not know and trust.

Welcome:
Blue-Knight-09
Your designated Tutor is:
Eclipse of Shadow
PostPosted: Sun Apr 23, 2006 2:26 pm

Eclipse starred unhappily at his notice of tutorship. How sad was it that he got stuck training such a young child with absolutely no talent. Eclipse supposed this was a gift, training the seemingly un-trainable.

Artemis felt angered on how Eclipse looked so dis-tastefully at his notice. Artemis knew his abilities far outranked that of this pitiful life form, and was determined to prove that he should be the teacher, rather than the student.

Eclipse stared rather bored at his pupil. "I suppose I should see where you're at," Eclipse spoke as bored as he looked, "and I suppose that means you'll have to fight me."

Artemis swiftly took out a windmill shuriken and released it from his hand to Eclipse's torso. He will surely die.

Quote:
Artemis stared blankly at his prey. Quite of out of character, Artemis swiftly released a windmill shuriken from his hand at Eclipse's torso. Artemis analyzed the situation quickly and saw within his mind the outcome of this simple attack. He will die without ever knowing he was attacked.

Artemis was walking through the woods. The already thick fog was getting thicker. Bats were flying everywhere. Artemis heard people running through the bushes. He could see ninjas, there were four of them. The ninjas aren't even master ninja, this should be easy. Artemis released four windmill shuriken in the air, the shuriken chopped two of the ninjas' heads off, but the other two ninjas pulled out their swords and defended themselves from the windmill shuriken. The two ninjas rushed for Artemis, before they even got to him he analysed their moves and jumped in the nearest tree throwing two kunai knives at the ninjas' eyes. The ninja died instantly. That was to easy.

Keitaro's opinion on the above to RP practice posts:
Improving, although...I'd say only at the quality of the Divinity Aspect when it first began. If you'd like to join the DA (possibly?), then I'd suggest you keep going, and improve even more 3nodding
...to reiterate, good job. Keep up the good work.
