Personaly i like a snare that has realy good pop. Like a thin snare your sticks just bounce right off them. but if you like a deeper sounding snare i recomend a steel snare.okay well pm me when ever k peace. twisted

Try to make yourself one some time it usually cost less than buying a good quality snare and you can pick what sound you want to make it.

thanks everyone. i think i shud have been a bit more specific sorry. right im looking for a snare thats quite light and the stick bounces off really eaasily. i play mostly punk/rock/emo type music so im looking for quite a light sounding snare i think. thanks very much for all the help.

Try getting a small one. Small ones like the joey jordison snare drum (even though the hardware isnt the best quality and its kinda mainstream for joey fans) the small ones like that when tightened get a very snappy sound without much ring or sustane (i think this is the kind of sound you meant)
some people would argue that the sound of one like that can be achieved with any size drums but the smaller ones do help with the ring and over all sound. (when i say small i dont necisarilly mean shallow i mean a small width)

another very very light snare that you can get that sound very nicely with is a piccolo snare that is choked up and tightened. They're very light because they're often just a few inches deep.
theres more sounds you can get with a piccolo that i dont think a punk/rock player would be interested in tho wink

Get a smaller sized one (not a picollo though, those are meant for an extra side drum and have a too-different sound for a main snare) with good ring. When tuning high/light it's easy to get a muffled sound which may sound good to you, but comes across like you're kicking a dead dog. The ring helps get the tone across to the audience. Stay away from steel snares, the low-end ones suck.

Yeah thats right about the picollos they aren't ment for main snare but i still think it sounds cool if you do it that way.
Ever hear a blast beat on a picollo I usually hate blast beats but that still makes it sound good to me.
A guy I know made a picollo sound just like a marchin snare.
I guess im just a sucker for the sound of a marching snare put in a metal beat or two. Mastadon's drummer does it a lot.

I have played a lot of diff snares. Right now I am playing a really shitty steal one and i like it more then a higher end wooded gretsch. so idk.. its preference.

Go to a music store and test drive a bunch. I can't tell you what you like. Also, be sure to play with each drum's tuning, since from my experience, most are not tuned to my satisfaction.
