Anyone want to talk about RP styles? What are your pet peeves? What improvements would you like to see, in general? Do you think RP is an important platform? How so? Are you interested i n improving style and wording, or are you happy with what you say and do, and the way you say and do it, now?
My pet peeve - inconsistant use of tense.

My petpeeve is when people in a serious RP, not like in a thread or something mind you because I'd be guilty too, post like this:
**gets shot**
AH!
**falls to the ground**
Because if it is a serious RP then they should be writing a whole paragraph about getting shot, it just makes sense you know? That is just... rolleyes why are you here to RP?
As far as the art of RP goes, I'm pretty much happy with the way I RP and I love RPing because it helps you develop your writing skills even more, especially improvisation and such.

Pet peeves... Oh deary me... I have a lot of 'em. One of 'em is the one Nolah pointed out, I HATE the asterisk things... I mean, I do it when I talk on threads, but there's a difference between talking and RPing... Again, as she said, they should have descriptions and such. Another is when other people control your characters... Now, a little thing here or there is fine, but when they start makin' 'em say things and do things... Hahaha, it just ticks me off to NO end. Another is when they don't even TRY to use different synonyms, or have horrid grammar they don't try and fix, oh, and those one-liner posts? *stabs them with a ramen noodle* OH and when people don't have their characters react to what's going on around them, and then complain that no one in the RP's talking to them... Drives me nuts. *is SUCH an RP nazi... >.>*
Improvements? Well, I'd like to improve on my vocabulary for one. My spelling isn't TOO atrocious, but it COULD be better. I'd also like to have my stuff feel more, I dunno, my own STYLE or something...
RP's a good thing to do when you have people who are actually trying, simply because you're exposed more to what sort of writing's being done out there. I know that I've picked up a few little things from people's writing here and there... It helps people grow as writers by seeing that, and simply having PRACTICE. Practice rocks.
Lol, I'm ALWAYS on a quest to improve, that's for certain. And I feel like I've gotten TONS better at writing since I started RPing. O.o I've gone back and read some of the very first RPs I was in, and man alive, I SUCKED. XD

I couldn't agree more. All those petpeeves I think I have as well. Silly me only did one. I think I could probably edit my posts a little more. After I make a post and I go over it later for some reason I'll spot places where I've missed letters or spaced things out badly or I forgot something lmao. Otherwise, my spelling is alright and I'm fairly happy with my vocabulary. I don't know if I show it in the guild but my friends call me a walking thesaurus. They're always asking me 'what's another way to say this?' 'what's another word for that'. It amuses me.

What are your pet peeves? When people write in present tense or mix tenses... like "He says as he puts the kettle down. Then he walked over to the oven and spoke again." AAAH! Also, "and then"... it's just sooo annoying!
What improvements would you like to see, in general? In myself- more imagination and getting into the plot more. Also, I should think before I type sometimes.

I agree with every single bit of this. Of course we all make a few typos, most of which can simply be ignored. Care may be taken to edit, of course, but often they are difficult to catch. I am also guilty of missing letters and spaces bewteen words. :/
rock babes hit the nail on the head with mixed tenses - they drive me insane, to the point of being able to ruin a mood or concentration.
And the one-liners! Ugh.
And the lack of synonyms! Ugh!
I would be the first person to help a new role-player, any anyone else who recognizes the need to improve.
Everyone has their own style. Wording, descriptions, etc. but in my humble opinion, there should still and always be great care taken in regard to the above.
Excellent comments, thank you all. Next questions coming to a forum near you soon!

Oh, 'and then' doesn't bother me much... just when it's repeated:
"He walked around the corner and then picked up the gun on the floor and then turned back around and then shot so and so and then laughed evilly."
It just sounds so primary-school-ish!!!

I'm guilty of putting 'and then ' in my posts but not repeatedly in the same sentence and I try not to put them in the same paragraph but I probably do sometimes.

No, that's what I meant. I always pay attention so that I don't put it terribly often lol. Don't feel bad.

I don't like...
God-Moding Mary Sues/Gary Stus Un-developed characters Stagnant plots The writing of oneself into a corner RPs that drop off and are never finished People who kill their characters and then leave for no reason People who leave their characters alive and then leave One lined posts (unless the plot calls for it) Improper punctuation Comma splices
Breaking of the Space/Time continum... which by the way I think we have done because unless it's really late at the base or the travelers went to bed really early, there's something not quite right...
People who use asteriks in literate RPs People who think forum/post style is the same as chat style And...ketchup. I don't much like ketchup.
