What's everyone's opinions on curfews and truancy laws? Do they serve a a good purpose, or do they just single young people out for harassment?
I'm against them. As long as a kid isn't doing anything destructive, they should have the right to come and go as they please as an adult.

I am most definitely against curfews. As long as they aren't doing anything destructive or unduly bothering anyone, I believe people should have the right to free passage. As far as truancy goes, I believe it should be each school's decision as to their position on that. Public schools, if they do exist, shouldn't have any say about that. A student's performance may be graded down for poor attendance, and the bad grades that potentially follow, but said student should not face legal reprecussions.

Exactly. It used to be that way til the 90s or so, when parents suddenly decided high schools should babysit teens instead of just educating them. That's why high schools cracked down on smoking, closed their campuses and starting getting on teens' a** in general.
I was in one of the last freshman classes that could go out for lunch. Good times, good times.

I'm glad that I homeschooled after seventh grade. It freed me from being stuck in schools where all I did was wait. I was far ahead of the rest of the students and was constantly harassed by them, so getting out of public school was a better choice. Public schools are corrupt because they are a direct result of the tyranny of public office. It seems that the only positive reinforcement for the faculty is higher scores on nationwide tests (such as the SAT), so they teach toward the test. So, the local governments work to satisfy the federal government by increasing test scores in order to get federal grants. Less than necessary is done regarding immediately usable job skills, something you could much more likely get in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get private-school environment, which resembles something more like a college campus, which is the way high schools used to be.

well I'm a senior at a closed campus public high school in california. So everyone else here be gratefull, be VERY gratefull that you don't have to live through the same situtaion. It sucks a LOT. I don't learn anything at school. I can ace my clases just by sleeping through them. I'm surrounded by dumbshits. I got 280 more points than the SAT average for my campus for chirst sake, and I only got a 1290.

I say just go out for lunch anyway. If you're 18, they can't hold you against your will. That's false imprisonment.

I bet there's a lopehole allowing me to walk out the front door without being suspended or expelled, since I'm 18. I want to go to college. So if there's way of doing that and still graduating high school I'm all for it.

52610. "Adult," for purposes of this section, means a person 18 years of age or older or a person who is not concurrently enrolled in a regular high school program. However, persons 18 years of age or older who are concurrently enrolled in a regular high school program are not adults for purposes of this section.
damnit, I'm not considered an adult even though I'm 18, cause I'm still concurrently enrolled in a regular high school program. This is all according to California state education code. So even though I'm 18, I'm not officially an adult by their standards, leaving me no power to decide.
I'll still ditch for lunch though lol.

As for the topic, high schools should opperate more like a college and Junior highs should be more like the high schools. At least mine.
Vash0five: thats sad. crying Kentwood (in washington) allows seniors to sign something, that lets them leave campus during lunch. Though no other time.
The schools try too hard to block any possible mischievous act from ever happenning rather than dealing with the problems as they occur.

Exaclty, it's because California schools went from first to worst lol. And it's true, there is no justice on campus. I've been accused of doing so many pranks on campus I never did. The pranks I do pull I'm never accused of lol. It's kind of funny. ohh well, don't feel sad for me. I'll just ditch for lunch anyways. I'm 18, so ******** staying in a shitty cafeteria for lunch.

i think that parents should ahve say on their own childs bedtime and curfew. some kids are more mature than others, some act lie 2 year olds even tho theyre 18. i mean, why should the governmaent have a say on what time i should be home on a saturday night, or any other teenager in the country for that matter! what happend to rights??!
BUT, some parents just dont care anymore what happens to their kids. thast jsut sad..but it doesnt hustify a whole generation having a national 'bedtime'!
i really think that they want as much control over he youth of this country as possible without riots breaking out. and then people will want to enlist in the service jsut to get out of here. pretty soon there wont be such thing as a draft. people will be begging to leave here.
and for the posts previously on this thread, alot of schools, (the schools in florida at least) pass out a large manual (or code of conduct as theyre called) desribing all of the rules, regulations, and rights of students (in florida) and im pretty sure (i would have to check) that it states that no matter what your age, you cannot leave campus of a lockdown school under any conditions. and ofcourse, they have you sign a sheet of paper sayign that youll abide to these rules. its bullshit. they FORCE you to sign it. so even if you dont agree with a single thing in the handbook, youre abliged to follow it by legality. THAT THEY FORCED UPON YOU!
and i, if anyone, know about it. my school is brandnew, and designed (the EXACT floorplans) after the closest prison. PRISON! with the stroke of a single button, anyone could perform complete lockdown on the school at any given second. it was designed after the columbine shootings for that reason. all of the exits are permanently gated and locked. the school was built away from the city and any food source purposely so that even if you found a way out (unlikely) and drove off (you cant walk because its right on the most trafficed major road in our city) you would be either extremely late or miss the next period. and we only get half an hour fro lunch.

That's rough. See if you can transfer schools. If I were you I'd just drop out. As for curfew laws, just defy them. They can't arrest everybody.
