What makes a mad scientist mad?
  The mad cackle
  The bizarre laboratory.
Trying to take over the world!
Eschewing the ordinary methods of conquest in favor of mad minions, genetically manipulated supermen, and other such devious devices.
The fact that they prefer strange chemical compounds to milk and cookies.
All of these, plus the characteristics listed below:
Some of these (explained), plus other qualities listed below:

Stabbyfairy and I have been having a debate about the exact nature of a mad scientist, and I think it's time this forum took a look at the matter. What makes a mad scientist mad rather than just vaguely eccentric? Is world conquest a requisite goal? Or would merely wishing to dominate the local townsfolk be enough? How large a town does it need to be in order for someone to qualify?

Is it the mad cackle? The messy hair? The tendency to gloat over defeated enemies before they are quite, entirely dead? The desire to use bizarre traps? The strange substances they ingest?

Weigh in and tell us what you think!

if a person was content with just taking over a city than i dont think they would fit the requirements. if they were taking over a city towards a final goal of global domination and enslavement then they're perfect ^^

also, mad cackling is a plus, gloating can be dangerous but i think the main thing to be a mad scientist is the need to utilyze your vastly superior knowledge in enslaving the human world to fit your desires and fantasies.

Personally, computers will be the means by which i will take over things. I will start small, attracting the children first, and then controlling the parents through manipulation and cell phones. i will gloat over it once i have captured the criminals before their final decent into the Antarctic Circle (a place very few will land on...) and all males shall be our slaves twisted harems are a requirement for my future

It's the mad cackle and the desire to take over the entire world. Or, perhaps, the universe, but that can easily come after the conquest of a world.

There's also the "genius" part. You know the term "evil genius." While this doesn't necessarily have to be super-super-psycho-scare-the-living-hell-out-of-everyone-'cause-I'm-so-smart genius, a mad scientist must, of course, have some level of intelligence and creativity. Without this, how can said mad scientist take over the world? A good vocabulary helps, too. Especially when gloating and/or insulting someone. Everyone looks stupid when saying, "Huh?" at a long, complicated, word-filled sentence. 3nodding

Messy hair isn't a requirement, really. It's just an occupational hazard. Who has the time to brush one's hair when one must plan to take over the world and thwart would-be heroes? It's just not fair to expect all that from a person. It's a small sacrifice, and who really cares about hair in the long run?

There are probbaly other things, but I'll just add them later.

It's gotta be about the hair, too. The crazy Einstein-like hair.

And a (possibly misplaced) feeling of superiority coupled with feeling completely misunderstood - or maybe just outcast from society.

Oh yeah - and a cool uniform, be it a lab coat or modified straitjacket. rofl

It's OK to only aim for one city in the short term, and use them to take over the rest of the world. I mean, Lord Ilpalazzo in Excel Saga's kinda crazy, and that's his strategy.
The cackle and the hair, definitely! Gotta keep up appearances. If you don't look mad, then you're just an evil genius and that's no fun. sad
Bizarre traps and strange substances, on the other hand... Yaaayyy! twisted

Oh, believe me -- it's not the hair. It's not the cackle, either. It's the brain. BRAIN. Mad scientists can look like anything -- and be anyone. But it takes a definately twisted mind to be a mad scientist.

That's also what I look for in a man.

No, it the eccentric attutide that makes a mad scientist a mad scientist. It's this very attitude that makes them aspire to taking over the town that shunned/belittled them because of the attitude. After the mad scientist takes over that town, he/she will quickly start to think that other towns are laughing at him, and then continues onward in such a manner until all the world is dominated.
The cackle comes, most likely, his attitude and gloating can come in an incoherent manner (Usually with drool) There's nothing that dumbfounds the would be hero like saying: AOHFKLSJGHKLETJPIOVNL:KSDFNIOPGHNSKLFNOPWIHAWGKNLKGNHGKLPHPWINPQPJAKGN. or something of the like. However, if the vocabulary is good then the mad scientist should use it in order to inflitrate other towns before taking them over.
EXAMPLE: Scientist walks into the mayors office. "Good day, to you sir, how may I be of service?" -Mayor says.
"I'm here to fill the position of [Insert extremely technical, and rarely heard of science name here], I would like to begin work as soon as possible."
The mayor is then dumbfounded by the scientists title and can only manage a meager nod.
The hair, as mentioned above, is an occupational hazard. You can help but get a few explosions while mixing rare, and strange chemicals.

A mad scientist would be in general someone who is delusional and obsessed with science and creating strange mixtures that could possible cause the world's end. The derangedness and delusional-ness would probably be the result of some psychological disorder and past traumatic experience. They probably also have a low self-esteem and feel the need ot be slightly sadistic to make up for it.

A mad scientist is a scientist that is simply ahead of the curve.

most of these things we're talking about, the hair, the genius mind, staring eyes, rejection, eccentricity

could apply to Doc Brown
in Back To The Future.

but i do not feel he should be considered, since he has no desire to conquer anything!
