This thread is designated for discussion on One of a Kind (OOAK) Customized Dolls.

Feel free to talk about anything related to beautiful one-of-a-kind doll creations, customizing doll experiences, tips on how to customize, favourite doll customizer, famous doll customizers, etc...

OOAK Dolls means that there is only ONE of such a doll in the whole world! Each doll is customized uniquely and even though one may try to duplicate another doll, it will not be exactly the same. Usually, the customizing process means clearing the original factory paint on the doll and hand-painting (or sticking decals) the doll's eyes, lips, styling their hair, and so on.

The customized dolls:
Can they be created by us and can we post pics?

One of my proudest moments in doll collecting was buying a repainted Butterfly Ring Koko from Ken Bartram. He's a very popular Gene/Tyler repaint artist. This was from his personal collection and he'd given her bright green eyes and dark red lips. He was selling her because he had de-haired her for a reroot and then couldn't figure out how to get the head off. I got her for $30 and his repaints usually go for hundreds of dollars. After I got her, I bought a bunch of wigs, my favorite being a purple pageboy. She was definately one of my favorite dolls, despite the fact that I couldn't find shoes to fit her.

I've done several reroots and repaints, but I've sold all that I had. I wish I could show some pictures. sweatdrop

wow, starfire27, your dolls are so cool!

no problem about the pictures, thanks for sharing your collection 3nodding

My fav. out of those dolls would be Rogue (based on Chelsea). Did you have to reroot her hair? or just root the few gold strands in front? I personally really hate rooting the hair, but the effects look really nice...
And Mavel White Queen is also really nice, did you do the outfit yourself?

Um, here's one of my customized dolls. I used a Volks mini pre-rooted brown doll head, braid the hair, washed it with boiling hot water, then let the braid loose and viola, here it is!

I love looking at OOAK dolls! I've always wished I could customize my own, but I'm absolutely hopeless at things like that. sweatdrop

Thanks! I cut her red hair and rerooted the blonde streaks that I cut from Supergirl to make bangs wink
I made her boots and reworked her outfit. But with White Queen I did her entire outfit. I think with the exception of Rogue, I cut, and made and sewed their entire outfits eek
Wonder woman was one fo my firsts, so her outfit is not as good sweatdrop

Here is my site of custom Rainbow Brite dolls:

Here is a doll that's not on the site yet, Rainbow's friend Brian.

I also have done some custom Barbies and plushies. My most recent was a custom Hellcat doll done for the handler of the Gaian named Patsy Walker (Hellcat's civilian name). Here is a pic.

I am currently working on a doll of Spiral from the X-Men. She has six arms, boy was THAT a fun challenge!

chibixane: You could try, it's actually really fun! A few years ago, when I first started repainting the dolls, it looked absolutely horrible! But practice makes perfect... with more practice, at least now, it looks acceptable wink If you need any tips or have questions about customizing, feel free to ask

starfire27: Wow, the outfits look really nice though biggrin I know I probably won't be able to reroot the hair, I've tried it once and I just can't stand it, as it takes forever, just to put so little hair on... crying

Giabrenna: I'm really impressed with your Spiral doll, how did you manage to put six arms in! It's really really unique! heart

i've repainted dolls for... almost 2-3 years now, but I'm still not that good at it crying

I tried customizing dollfie plus, but I just don't really get how to put the glass eyes in, it's always wiggling around...

As for the hair, you might be able to find some doll sized wigs at craft store, there were some at Walmart, but I'm not sure if those wigs fits barbie-sized dolls though

Wow, these pictures that everyone has up are amazing! Does anyone sell their dolls that they make? I'm sure you would get a pretty penny for them. I have just decided to recreate a doll, but am in the design stage...

I do sell my dolls on ebay occassionally, it's a fun way to earn some extra money redface

Dame Edna, you should try it out, it's really fun!

For repaints, I use acrylics and a good brush (the paintbrush is really important, as fine paintbrush allows you to do so much more... when I just started, I had a really thick one and totally messed up my work). If you want to take away the factory paint, just use removers, such as nail polish remover, soak a Q-tip with it, and wipe it off.

Have you tried using putty for those wiggly eyes? I had to make my own eyes 'cause the ones I ordered were back ordered and my doll was blind X_X I'm trying to arrange a trade: an outfit I made for a wig. This one girl seemed interested, but she hasn't emailed me back yet, so I dunno.
