I was wondering how everyone felt about killing insects.
I certainly do not engage in intentional insect killing. I show no discrimination when it comes to other species. A being is a being and I choose not to kill any of them. Any insect I see roaming about my house, I pick up and put outside.
It really disgusts me how people can so carelessly kill insects. They show abosolutely no regard to the fact that they are ending a life.
Opinions?

I don't go out of my way to kill insects. However, if I'm out in the woods being swarmed by mosquitos, then I'm sure as hell going to smack any that land on my skin. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to be covered in huge red bumps just to save one of a trillion mosquitos.
sweatdrop As long as they aren't trying to bite me/draw blood, I'm not going to hurt them.

Yesterday there was a bumble bee walking around in my garage. He wasn't flying at all, so I put him in a little cup and carried him over to some flowers and he suddenly started to fly and collect pollen. It was cute. I save the day. 4laugh

I do not purposely or willingly kill insects. It's not polite, they have just as much right to be here as we do, if not more. I tell everyone that when they complain about bugs. People think I'm crazy, because I'd pick up a bug and place it outside before killing it. My cousin is allergic to hornets and bees, and there are a ton in my house.. which I don't mind. But, he bought some of that spray that kills them, and started going nuts spraying every bug he saw. I was like.. "Dude! Leave them alone, they're not bothering you!" "If they come near you, don't try to swat them away, it only makes them angry. Don't run, they'll follow you. Just sit there and pretend you're not bothered.. they'll go away."
It really annoys me how people can be so cruel that way. I'm a pacifist.. so I get really T.O.ed by that.
My dad is hilarious though, whenever I'm visiting with my parents.. if he sees a bug, he says to me "You'd better take your friend outside if you don't want it to be dead." So, at least he makes the effort to care a bit before he just runs to get the swatter or spray. mrgreen

Sad to say, I do. Unfortunately, I have only two fears in my life, and the bigger of the two is bugs. From a giant tarantula to the smallest fruit fly, I'm TERRIFIED of bugs of all sorts.
So yes, I do kill them. If there's a spider in my room, I physically cannot bring myself to enter until it has been taken care of. That's how great my fear is. Recently, I lived two weeks in the guestroom of my house because I found a worm in my room and couldn't get to it with a vacuum fast enough before it dissappeared from sight.
However, I do hold myself to certain restrictions. I will only kill them if they are inside my house. If they're outside, it would be ridiculous of me not to simply move somewhere else. And inside, when possible, I do make all attempts to have someone catch them in a cup and bring them outside.
When I do have to kill them, though, I do make an attempt to keep it as clean as possible. I won't use sprays since a lot of them are bad for the environment, and swatters sometimes leave them alive but in excruciating pain, so I don't use those either. I go straight at them with a vacuumn cleaner, which either shoots them along so fast they die instantly on impact, or if they get through the filter, they've got lots to chomp on and eat, I guess, trapped away from me.
Yes, I feel terrible, and several times I have tried to beat my fear in the interest of saving lives, but nothing I have done has worked and I'm out of ideas. I have been called a hypocrite at times, but I don't really see how. My concious choice is to help protect life, but my fear is not concious. If it were, I'd have gotten rid of it years ago.

Well I agree with Kaioto... If there's a spider in my room, I dont go in it at all until it's gone... but whenever I see a bug in my house (not in my room) and my parents see it too, I ask them not to kill it but to just place it outside. Sometimes they listen to me, sometimes, well most of the time, they kill it... it makes me so sad though... sad

I don't kill insects. I couldn't do it. I used to when I was younger, but then again, I was terried of them and I wanted to get rid of them in any way that I could. Now that I look back at it, I would do the meaniest things to get them to die, I don't do that anymore now. I'm more mature.
But, I don't. But like... what Ciel Avec said, if there was a misquito around me and whatever, I'll just use insect repellant, it doesn't kill them, they just don't like the smell of it, and they'll go away. Ne?

I try not to kill any insects. I used to when i was younger but i was like really scared of spiders and i didn't think about what would happen to them, I just didn't want them there. I was actually thinking about insects and i thought about Fear Factor. No one really says anything about it but they kill insects. They have people eat them in like every show. I was kind of surprised that no ones ever brought this up, that i've seen.

I'm scared to death of most bugs. But I've stopped killing them on purpose. When I first became a vegetarian, I figured it was all right because they're "insentient beings." I'm not even sure if that's true or not. But then a tragic incident with a seven-legged spider happened at my sleepaway camp, and it brought me to love spiders. I'm still scared as hell of them, though. I became resident spider-saver of my unit, always keeping a cup on hand to get them out safely. I still do that. And after some speculation, I generally try not to kill other bugs, either. But it's really hard for me with small bugs like ants and mosquitoes, the kind that really annoy me. It's hard to keep myself from whacking a whole ant line that's trying to get into my food. But I'm getting used to it. The other night, I spent maybe half an hour trying to get a mayfly out of my room without killing it or touching it. (I don't like to touch bugs.) I think I hurt it pretty badly, though. I was throwing cups at it, trying to get it off the ceiling. A couple times the cup hit it, but I didn't mean for it to. There were also two spiders in my room then... a tiny one, and an about-average-size one. I didn't really care about the tiny one... small spiders never really scared me... but the other one scared the crap out of me. I think it's taken up permanent residence in my room, and I swear it can fly. Because every time I come after it with the cup to catch it and get it out my window and onto my "balcony," it disappears, and I find it across the room a few minutes later.

Nobody is allowed to tell me that doesn't suck.

I do kill fleas and ticks if I find them in my house or on an animal. Also, when I'm gardening, I'll kill Japanese beetles if I find them on my plants.
On occasion if I find something in the house which I know could harm my infant and I can't get it outside, I'll kill it.
Other than that, no. And regardless of the situation, I never squish bees, spiders, or ants.
However, I do kill earwigs. I have no shame about killing them whatsoever.

If they aren't in my house and aren't bugging me... I leave them alone unless of course they are trying to invade my garden and are trying to eat my veggies... then I kill them because its either my veggies or them.
But I follow a strict organic gardening policy... so I don't kill any good bugs by accident.
I do kill ants, spiders, fleas, mosquitos, wasps and yellow jackets. Only because they are irritating, bite and cause trouble.

I won't bother an insect or spider unless it tries to bite me. Then it is attacking me and I'd rather it not and its hard to converse with a bug to explain how you'd like it not to bite you.
I usually try to capture them in a glass and take them outside. If I accidently kill them when trying to capture them, I feel sad crying

What a coincidence! Right now I'm working on my ecology project. This project for everyone else would've been to collect and kill bugs, and stick them on pins. However, I managed to get an alternate assignment.
My policy about bug killing is to kill them only if they pose danger to me. If there are bugs in my food, I'll kill them... usually, not always. When I got a tick, I killed it as soon as I could. And without regret, I might add. It had it coming, that's what I say.
