What is an Evil Overlord without his Fortress of Doom? A Mad Scientist without his lab full of strange instruments and odd bubbling sounds?
The question is: Where will you put your center of operations? Don't underestimate the power of a tower set on craggy hills or a high-tech lab set on an isolated and uncharted island.
How seriously will people take you if you settle in the middle of a sunshine-drenched city and keep a tidy lawn with (heaven forbid!) pink, plastic flamingos up front.
It's never too early to start looking for the ideal plot for your plots.
So--where will you put your place?

I'll go for the suburbs. No one will suspect me there... ninja I mean, the first places people look are in the castles on a clifftop, or in random undiscovered caves. They have to get discovered some time, and then you've got some explorer and probably an entire TV crew to dispose of without anyone noticing.

A nice, tall hill in the middle of a nice, flat, empty field, so that I can see people comnig from far away. And, of course, it'd look like a normal house on the outside, and all the machines and things would be inside the hill, out of sight of anyone who came to visit. As if anyone would.

why build something new when you can upgrade what's already there? i would choose a nice castle in the united kingdom and do a complete overhaul with new security features. ive always wanted my own castle, and this way i get to keep all the cool old secret passages too
(i would overhaul many different castles in this area so that none know exactly which is my real place of residence and use the underground secret lair as a bunker with complete control access to my empire from down there with iris, fingerprint, voice print identification testing)

I'm building my fortress in the Asteroid Belt! Yup just try to find me now! Bwahahahaaaaa
All the hightest tech avalible will be required to remake a goodly sized asteroid into the dream home of my imaginings. Lots of shiny gadgets, telescopes, tacyon devices, tesla coils (for old times sake). Not to mention no worries about disposing of the experiments that fail, just shoot them out an airlock...in their underwear if need be.
If and when the collective governments of Earth decide I'm enough of a threat to do something about, they'll have to search millions of asteroids in the attempt to find me. While their space fleet; the building of which will have taken most of the military funding and development over the course of years, is searching, I'll just teleport my minions to Earth...in the near past...like last Tuesday...and take over! Bwahahaaaaa

I suggest the top floor of my campus' chemistry building. All the chemicals you need -- plus, if anyone finds you, you can blame it on my chem 112 professor.
And besides, they have bunsen burners.

Pre-heated-death has an idea there--the Low Budget Fortress, using the supplies that are already available.
It lacks a certain elegance, true, but it does mean you can skip the accumulation of resources step and go straight to World Conquest.

hmmm, choices choices.. the island is tempting, but maybe too isolated, i think i'd go for a mountain overlooking a city, a humble stone built cottage on a narrow plateau a few hundred feet up the mountainside, with an uninterupted view over the whole of the city, and a vast warren of ancient caves delved into the mountain behind it. the exploring of which will have netted me many rare minerals and ores that i can use to my advantage, access to a fast flowing underground river that brings me out safely on the other side of the mountain down one branch, and allows me to taint the city's water supply with another twisted plus a long twisting staircase, cut into the rock, that brings me to the mountains summit, where i have installed solar panels and a super powerful satelite dish, these are unlikely to be spotted by prying eyes as the topography of the mountain creates vicious updrafts which tear aircraft to pieces*insert maniacal laugh here*
these caves have lain undiscovered for what could be thousands of years, the entrance cunningly concealed behind a cleverly balanced standing stone, there are strange devices painted on the walls, and ancient artifacts to be found, sealed stoneware jars containing all manner of interesting things! some of which i shall find VERY useful, these finds of mine appear to have been here far longer than humans have been in existence, i surmise that they are either from a previous race that inhabited the planet before this current batch of humans evolved, or from an alien race, some of the substances that i have tested in the lab don't appear to be of earthly origin ninja

i would have to go with the uncharted island. nobody knows it exsists, and there is nobody to interupt your plans to take over the world.
