Time to discuss Namco's first ever Tales Game...

Tales of Phantasia (or sometimes Tales of Fantasia) (Japanese: テイルズ オブ ファンタジア, Teiruzu obu Fantajia )

This game was released first, on the Super Famicom [SNES] on December 15, 1995. It was later released, in Japan, on the PSone. And finally, 11 years later, it came to the U.S, , March 6, 2006. (March 31 for U.K)

Shortened Storyline As told by Wikipedia

Wiki

Tales of Phantasia begins by showing a heroic battle between four unknown warriors against an evil sorceror, Dhaos, whose outcome changed the fate of the world. The warriors were victorious, and sealed Dhaos away using the power of two pendants, thus returning peace to the world.

The adventure begins in the town of Totus ten years later, where a young swordsman named Cless Alvein and his best friend, archer Chester Barklight, live. The town is destroyed by a dark knight named Malice and his soldiers while Cless and Chester are out hunting in the forest. Every villager is killed in the attack, including Chester's sister and both of Cless' parents. While Chester is in mourning, Cless vows for revenge and proceeds to the town of Euclid in search of the dark knight.

Unfortunately, he is betrayed there by his cowardly uncle and is thrown in jail, captured by Malice. The heirloom pendant entrusted to Cless by his father Miguel is taken away from him, but Cless does not know of its significance in holding Dhaos sealed, nor that his father was one of the original four who sealed him away.

Cless meets Mint Adnade (a Mana healer) in the jail, and she joins the party and helps him escape. Soon afterwards, the party meets Chester again at Tornix Morrison's house, another of the four original warriors. Tornix informs the party that he knew Cless' parents and Mint's mother quite well, and they once fought together to seal away a great evil. But he is horrified to hear that Cless' pendant has been stolen, and immediately runs off towards a nearby masoleum. Cless and party figure out that Malice must be there, and follow Tornix without him knowing. Unfortunately, Malice manages to release Dhaos using the pendants before Tornix and party can stop him. With no hope of dealing with the all-powerful Dhaos for now, Tornix transports Mint and Cless back in time so that they can learn about Dhaos and acquire the skills to defeat him. Chester and Tornix are left behind to suffer Dhaos' wrath.

~How do the name translations affect you?
~Does this compare to ToS, in your opinion?
~Is this a TRUE ToS sequel?

Yeah, Phantasia is lasting a long time, which I expect from any RPG.
I've only played the SNES and GBA ones, so I'll pick GBA.
Klarth -> Claus is the only name that annoys me. I keep thinking of Santa.
It can't really compare to ToS, seeing as they're on different platforms.
Technically, ToS is the prequel to this, showing how Yggdrasil got it's name. But yeah, it more or less is the sequel.

I've only played the SNES version. I'm afraid, litteraly, over the GBA version. Cress Albain, Barklight...CLAUS. WTF, CLAUS?! HE'S NOT SANTA! HE DOESN'T GIVE OUT GIFTS! HE'S QUITE THE OPPOSITE!

Most bastards like comparing ToS to ToP, and seeing how I'm a b*****d, I do that all the time.

Putting it that way makes it seem like ToS' storyline is so bland. XP

Oh yes, everyone vote for Klarth.

Ugh, I played the snes one too, inappropriate moments and all. The names make me wince.

Chester, he's a pretty bad a** archer. Well, probably the only one besides Nanaly, Chelsea and uh...I think that's it.

I prefer Cless over Lloyd, but I dunno about Mint. She doesn't appeal to me that much.

Chester will stay my top fave of all of the Tales series for a good while. heart There are other archers, like Natalia in Tales of the Abyss, and I'm not sure about Woodrow (Garr). He's an archer in the cameo battle in ToS, but in Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3, he's a swordsman with no archer skills at all. I need to play Tales of Destiny to see.

I like all main characters, though Stahn, Kyle, Loni, Senel and Luke might not make it high in my fave list.

Man, I forgot about Natalia. Yeah, Garr would count. I remember my friend calling him a really crappy archer. gonk
>.> I kicked his a** in ND3, oh hell yes I did.

As for the Tales of Main characters, it would be Luke, Cless...and that's probably it. I can't really judge, seeing how I haven't played the other's games. Like Rid, for example. I think he's pretty cute, though all he thinks about is food. But who am I to say anything?

Of course, my fav. Tales of Character is Zelos. Zelos all the way.
PostPosted: Wed Jun 07, 2006 6:52 pm

Rid doesn't think all about food. sad If you see the anime, you'll see that Rid appears dense and uncaring at first but will act spontaneously to cheer his friends up. I love what he did for Meredy. 3nodding When Meredy thought that she was a burden to the group, Rid, out of nowhere, swept her off her feet and jumped into a pool.

^^ I didn't get that far in the anime. Lesse...uh, right after Marone and Rid fight that monster. I think I'm about one or two episodes after that. My friend doesn't like Farah all that much. XD
