We've been learning about this in school. It's kind of ironic that the whole thing was due to a lapse of communication.First the repeal of the Orders in council and then the Treaty of Ghent. It's all rather funny. The Treaty of Ghent didn't even solve the problem that we went to war over, impressment. It was a total waste of time and energy. Some of the men in the war amazed me though like Oliver Hazard Perry. It is so ironic that his middle name was Hazard.During the Battle of Lake Erie he was just pacing back and forth on the ship while men who were coming to speak with him were literally getting their heads blown off and he was never hit. Then when the Constitution(one of our ships, not the actual Constitution) was going down and he was escaping in a row boat, cannons were being fired at the row boat, he was never hit! It amazes me how lucky he was.

Don't forget about Laura Secord. That was one amazing woman. She is part of the reason why Canada came out on top during the war of 1812.. one other amusing note... the war of 1812 didn't officially end until 1814..

Why do you say that?

The War of 1812, or the "Forgotten War" is very important to American History. It proved that America was ready to be an independent nation, and that they were able to beat the odds. An army of 4,000 ragtag men of different races and cultures united to defend their country. They beat the odds of defeating an army of 10,000 well-trained men. It was a war full of shame, pride, bravery, and waryness.

Not to mention, the National Anthem was written during this time. 3nodding

Jackson's whole "Let's murder them natives" policy. That, and I'm a John Quincy Adams fan.

P.S. I deleted the post with the Canada/Australia/USA joke because it was utterly and completly pointless.

The Constitution is still in service, infact, it is the worlds oldest warship still in service todate.

It's true that slow commication was part of the reason the War of 1812 started. If the English government had gotten through in time with the repeal of the laws againist the American merchants and ships, the War Hawks probably couldn't have forced through a war.

In addition, the British were also repelled from Baltimore, with equally disasterous losses. At both New Orleans (my residence for the last 16 years) and Baltimore the commanding general was mortally wounded, greatly demoralizing the British- Aside from the U.S. invasion of Canada and the burning of Washington, the land campaign didn't go so well for the British. Add to this the fact that the Royal Navy kept losing frigates to the undefeated U.S.S. Constitution (Guerriere, Java, Cyan, and the sloop Levant at final count plus a great deal of merchant shipping) and while Britain could probably have recovered from all of that, they still got thier nose bloodied.

Don't forget, he also passed legislation that decentralized our banking system and allowed every white man the right to vote.
