Okay, here it goes. I have a son in 3rd grade who has been struggling with school. His school has done testing and found that he is smart he just has an attention problem. So anyway, in a round about way they suggested taking him to a doctor to have him tested for ADD. Well I knew how my husband would react to this and sure enough he thinks it's (a bunch of bullshit). well in my opinion anything to get him help in school i'm all for. He is bellow grade level and struggling. And the longer it goes the further behind he will get. Does anyone have an opinion or advise?

I have similar problems with my sons' dad whenever they have problems. I know it can make the situation harder.

Take your son to be tested. If there's a problem, it's better to know about it. Be sure to ask the doctor to consider whether he might be reacting to foods or other stimuli, as well. (Just ask Kathan how bad THAT can get.)

I say go for it too as it can pick up all sorts of problems.
Thats the oly way you get help for your kids.
Whenn my daughter was having troule at school we got her tested ad discovered she's dyslexic, it's amazig how much better she felt knowing what was wrong.

Thanks, I am going to test him. It's just going to be a battle with my husband. He says that he had the same problems in school. Well I didn't tell him but, i've always thought my husband was ADD. I don't want to start another argument so I will just stick with my son's problem.

Good. I'm glad you're getting him tested.

Good luck!

Let us know how the testing goes.

I heard something on tv recently that suggested lack of Omega3 oils could cause ADD-like symptoms. I wish I could remember the specific details, but I have also heard of a treatment that involves the affected child wearing tinted lenses. I think that it goes along the lines of dyslexia and getting mords wuddled.

Good Luck

My son is 17 and was DX'd ADHD in first grade.

He'd been an easy baby and toddler and suddenly in pre-school and Kindergarten turned into a tyrant. Turns out he was allergc to dairy(he hated milk, I dind't give it to him - the schools felt he NEEDED it and taught him to like it) and food colouring and artificial flavour. It took years to discover all he was allergic to - but getting rid of dairy really helped. Still it wasn't until the others went away that he started normalizing.

Most of hte kids "on the spectrum" are very bright - it seems to be connected somehow.

Try to explain all this to your husband - and if you're in the states, then you'll be able to get some federally mandated extra help for him(although dont hold your breath too long)

I would honestly try removing all dairy(citrus and wheat are also baddies), food colour and flavourings from his diet(yes it is a pita, but give it a whilrl) if after say a month of no dairy etc he seems to be doing better, then introduce back one item and see what happens. Do this an item at a time, and if suddenly he goes nuts - you have an idea what is causing it. Mind you sometimes it is a combo.

Some allergists will test for food allergies and their link to behavior - its worth a try. The problem is, some refuse to believe(because of the lovely old AMA) that food allergies cause this stuff
