Maybe it's just me but doesn't it seem like there's not a lot of horror movies on TV these days?
Now I'm not talking about all the horror flicks we get to see on premium channels, or the Masters of Horror series. But man when I was a kid it seemed like there were horror movies on all the time.
I guess we could say that's because it's not the 80's anymore, and we are no longer in a horror movie mania craze.
There used to be USA Up All Night, USA Saturday Nightmares, Super Scary Saturday on TBS (hosted by Grandpa Munster), Commander USA's Groovy Movies (man USA network used to be soooooo cool). And stuff like that. Does anyone else remember these? Share your stories here. smile
I became a horror movie fan when I was a kid. Spending weekend afternoons watching them with my Dad, and sometimes even late nights watching them with one of my older brothers. I even had a sister in law who liked them. (She's got a hillarious Exorcist story btw)
When I was in Elementary school, there was hardly a kid who didn't know who Freddy and Jason were. Even some girls I knew watched these films. At lunchtime and on the playground me and my buddies used to talk about who would win in a fight between Freddy and Jason.
For a horror movie fan, there was nothing like growing up in the 80's.

they even took off tales from the crypt. I was born in '92, by the time i was about seven years old I was in second grade, even then i loved to be scared i borrowed books from the library, i watched movies. By the time i was ten, they started to thin out, mainly because of "over protective" parents. I think it is sad that parents these days live in such fear of their children's future, "what if he turns out to be a killer?" or "it'll be collumbine all over again" what they dont realize is that it is more likely their lack of exposure to this kind of stuff that would make them snap when theyre out in the real world.

Waaay back in the day(before the 80s wink ), they also showed weekend 'creature features'(Friday night and Saturday afternoon) I watched those religiously. I don't remember my parents being rabid horror fans, but my mom adored Dark Shadows and Kolchak the Night Stalker and she let me watch them with her. Every Sunday morning I'd go out with my dad and we'd buy donuts and wander over to the book shop to pick up a newspaper and the latest horror anthology magazine(stuff like Vampirella or Eerie). They weren't terribly vigilant as to what I watched, so when we got pay channels....I watched anything that was listed as horror. I also developed a passion for horror books and especially Famous Monsters of Filmland and Fangoria magazines. It's hard to find a good outlet for horror appreciation nowadays. It's been forever since I've seen a 'creature feature'(I'll admit, not having cable doesn't help that situation...hehehe) and all the internet horror sites just want to squee over The Ring or Scream, or whatever Hollywood Horror/Slasher flick is currently *in*...
I think I've become a bit of a Horror Snob! *le sigh*

When I was really little, like 4-6, I was scared to death of all things that were even remotely frightening. I would watch "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" from behind a book, and cover my face when anything frightening popped up.
Eventually I realized that I sort of liked being freaked out, and that the scary stuff intrigued me. Sounds weird? Oh well. I started to watch "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" and the "Goosebumps" TV series regularly, while I also loved the book "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark."
I've always had older siblings who've watched horror movies, so I would often watch with them. Now whenever I go to BlockBuster, I usually rent a horror movie. Or if I see a good movie on my TV guide, I make sure to watch that.
The only stuff that still scares me are the talking dolls and the clowns. Bleh!
By the way, I was born in 1990, so I missed out on all the good 70-80's childhood introductions to horror. sad

Man, I feel like a really late bloomer. I didn't begin exposing myself to horror movies until I was about sixteen (four years ago) and decided to watch Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers on AMC's Monsterfest (or whatever they call that). I turned into such a horror junkie after watching that movie that my mother thought I was psychotic; I must have rented almost every single horror film at the local Blockbuster (not including the obvious foul-ups like Jack Frost 2) within a year.

Tygrr There used to be USA Up All Night, USA Saturday Nightmares, Super Scary Saturday on TBS (hosted by Grandpa Munster)
I remember those days and they were good. Didn't some hillbilly named Billy Joe or Bobby Ray used to host the one on TNT? Can't really remember his name, but he hosted in front of a trailer. He was cool and the movies rocked. Classics, mostly, but it was the good ones. My mom didn't let me watch scary movies a lot when I was younger. Of course, I had to sleep with the night light on, too, but that's a different story. Got into them through my numerous babysitters that would bring over scary movies, and my aunt took my brother and I out to scary movies in theatres. I'm not a bad person for watching them and I turned out rather non-evil. I like watching violence but not doing violence (except in certain instances).

When I was little, I used to watch this show called "Action Theater" and they'd show all the Vincent Price movies and all the old horror movies. 4laugh The one I remember best was one where all these people were fighting over some inheritance money and somebody fell down the stairs into a pirhana tank and got gobbled up! I have no clue what that movie was to this day. rolleyes Also, my mom liked science fiction, so horror was just a lateral slide for me. I didn't get to watch Hellraiser until I was 18 though. I was raised on the old stuff. I was watching a movie a long time ago called "Gates of Hell" where this girl pukes up her intestines and a big sack of guts and my friend I was watching it with couldn't stop dry heaving! rofl I laughed hard that day! And it's not that I don't like a little romance in my life, but I always like to see somebody get skewered for having sex. Makes the romance more tolerable. And way more funny.
And,hey! That's Joe Bob Briggs you're talking about! The main man of drive in movies! I heart Joe Bob! He wrote cool movie reviews forever. I suggest "Joe Bob Goes to the Drive In" as an excellent read for cheesy horror fans.

But I do feel bad for you guys not getting to grow up in the 80's with some of us. The_Wicked_Man Man, I feel like a really late bloomer. Hell this year they barely had any other then the ones on cinimax and those hcannels. Class of '96 here. TCM shows some horror now and then. No commercials either. AMC Shows some good stuff once in a while but they have to do the tv editing thing. God bless 'em they try at least.
I saw they got A Nightmare On Elm Street there now too. If they get a couple more of those, keep up with Halloween and get a couple Hellraisers like last Halloween, Monster Fest might be pretty really something this year.RavenMoonFlower I remember those days and they were good. Wow lots of replies. I love hearing everyone's stories of how they became horror fans. I don't mind sharing mine either. I know there's some horror fans that consider a lot of 80's horror cheesy, but for me the 80's was THE decade to be a horror fan.

I really wish I was a teen in the 80's, because I would have experienced the awesomeness that is that decade. Not only in horror movies, but I also love 80's style and 80's music.
Oh well, I still had a good childhood in the 90's.

This sounds like the worst horror film to start with, but I first watched Jason X, and decided to see some of the previous films in the series. First was FVJ, then F13 part 3, 2, 1, 6, 9. Then I started checking out some other horror series, and before long, I realised I was hooked. It happened gradually, then suddenly whee

Which one ended up being your favorite? It's part 6 for me.
