hende i think gandalf, but some times i wonder if he is a wizard. i mean, --fireworks --bright flashes of light --smacking ppl with his cane i dont seem to remember him actualy useing magic... Actually he did...he enlarged himself and grew menacing and darkened a room to scare Bilbo out of his "my precious" attitude in the beginning. But, according to Tolkien, being a wizard wasn't all about magic...it was about having the knowledge and power of magic, but not using it. And he used magic to deflect Legolas's arrow and Gimli's axe, and cause Aragorn's sword to burn his hands to make him drop it. 3nodding When you think about it, all Saruman used magic for was to manipulate people with his voice. stare

sonofniloc actualy come to think of it your right i seam to remember him fighting sarumon by macking him fly backwards by flicking his staff in hi general direction arrow Oh yeah...forgot about that...that too. Although they aren't wizards in the wizard sense...they are Istari...um....how to explain it? Gandalf and Saruman were once Maiar....low-level angels, so to speak. They were chosen by the Valar, high-level angels, to help destroy the Ring and were made like a cross between elves and human...they looked and aged like humans, but long-lifed like elves...and they could be killed (like Gandalf did after the fight with the Balrog). There were five of them originally...Saruman the White, Radagast the Brown, Gandalf the Grey, and two Blues (I don't remember their names...or if they even had names). Their mission was to help the races of Middle Earth in this task. Only Gandalf was successful...the two Blues went east, beyond Mordor, and were never heard from again. Radagast the Brown failed because instead of aligning with the races, he ignored the task and spent his time with animals. Saruman was corrupted by the power of the Ring.
