Well I don't know exactly if my problem is hardware or software, so I will post here.

I was helping someone with their network and could not get it resolved. They have two computers one is a desktop the other is a tablet pc.

They have a cable modem with a wireless router connected to it. The tablet pc connects to the internet just fine, but since around Christmas the desktop will not connect. The desktop is wired and the cable is good. The port on the router is also good. I have tried a new network card, as well as a wireless network card, but it will not connect.

The desktop is set to Dhcp (as well as the tablet) and when I type ipconfig/all in a command line it shows the ip something like 167.216.10.1 (I don't remember the exect number) with a subnetmask of 255.255.0.0. The tablet pc gives me like 192.168.1.100 and subnet 255.255.255.0. If I set the ip on the desktop to 192.168.1.102 and subnet 255.255.255.0 it will say it is connected but I can't get the internet, also at this point I can ping the router but not the tablet pc. The tablet pc can ping the desktop.

Any help would be appreciated.

so far I have:

I have unplugged both the modem and router, plugged them back in and rebooted the computer, but the ip on the desktop was still in the subnet of 255.255.0.0. This happened with the wired card and wireless.

It does have an onboard ethernet. I installed a network card and that did not work, even after I reinstalled drivers. Then I tried installing a wireless card, that did not fix it, even after reinstalling those drivers.

I unplugged the cable from the desktop and plugged it into the tablet (also disabled the wireless on the tablet) The tablet pc still connected fine.

this will take some time and effort but unplug your network connection and redo all of your settings re configure everything first reset your settings if possible then reconfig. =let me know if this works or not
