DBT stands for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. It is usually done as a group therapy. I was in it before, and now my shrink thinks it would be good for me to try again.
HAs anyone else done DBT? what do you think of it?

I'm not one for group therapy.

I haven't done DBT, because it's wrong for my illness, but the lady who developed it works in the school where I got my undergraduate degree! Anyway, I think it can be a very helpful therapy for some. I really support therapy techniques that focus on rehabilitative aspects of treatment.

What is it?

It's a type of therapy that is used on people with Borderline Personality Disorder. It can have group and individual sessions within the same treatment plan. The overall goal is to decrease negative behaviors and teach the person skills so that they can handle situations better. It's actually a lot more complicated than that, but you can Google for more information!

I wasn't aware that DBT was only for Borderlines, although I do have BPD. is that true?

Well, I'm not going to say that it's "only" for Borderlines, because I imagine it could be helpful for some other people, even if it hasn't been tried on them yet. But I do know that it was developed for Borderlines, and it is inappropriate for the treatment of some other disorders such as Schizophrenia.

I know this topic is old, but I'm currently in DBT.

It's an amazing way of looking at life if you're open to changing patters and other things. It's a hell of a lot of work, but the therapy is a godsend. I've been through regular counsuling and it never worked. It appeared to work, b ut that was just superfically. It never got to the roots of my problems.

I'm Bipolar II, and I don't have BPD. Not everyone in the group has BPD.

Group isn't like 'normal' group therapy. It's where you learn skills that are presented in DBT.

Without it, I'd be dead.

I am actually in a day treatment program four days a week that is based on DBT. It's weird. Although I may possibly have BPD, i dont get much from it other than hearing about things that sound like me and getting upset about it. I dont know what else to say. It's all therapy to me. 7 years of it will do that to ya i guess...

Funny. My DBT therapist is also doing CBT with therapy.

Ah, I have the best of both worlds! ^.^
