Just to get people to talk:

Were you satisfied with the ending? In a way did you wish Lyra and Will could have stayed with eachother? What?

I was sad. crying I wished they could have lived happily ever after but in truth the change was nice.

Ya, I agree, I wish they could have stayed together. And it was a change when compared to many other stories. I think that ending represents our lives the most; We can't always get what we want, and sometimes we have to settle with something less meaningful.

But they always had the knowledge that they would be together someday, even if not in their own bodies. That seems like it would be a comfort.

I found that so sad ;_; I am in a long-term long-distance relationship and separation... it's so bad. Yet I can count the days till next I see my boyfriend. they have nothing to count or wait for, they simply cannot see each other. I'm not a big fan of sad endings, though in many ways the ending turned out well. I think the resentment is greater when I feel that the author may have been trying to balance the good and the bad in his book and that's why he added those elements, rather than them stemming from the flow of everything.

I suppose the ending ended in a way that it must....??

Yes, it's sad that Lyra and Will are separated... and it's extremely touching that Lyra suggested what she suggested ( stare er, dunno, I'm avoiding spoilers??), albeit knowing that they'll never actually meet/see each other.

But then if either of them go to the other world, then they'd end up like Will's Dad.

The thought of them staying together at that "zebra/strange animal land" did cross my mind, but coming to think of it the book mentioned something about that not working too, no? can't remember... have to read the books again! whee

I think the ending was artful...

Sorry, notte, but I don't think that would work either. Lyra and Will would both just suffer the same fate sooner. Albeit together, but if I had to choose, and if I was in their situation, I don't think I would do what they did. Living my whole life without the man I love? I couldn't do it. Neither could he. If I had to choose, I would choose to die with him.

Morbid, yeah, but it is what I think I would do sweatdrop

I'm not sure I would do the same, but I've never been in love (I think sweatdrop ). I think it was a good ending though, because it wasn't completely sad and there was a hope that they would be together again someday. Technically it was good as well - for an ending - as they're quite hard to do withoue it sounding too perfect and happy or like you're just trying to stop there being a happy ending.

Thankyou xd . It's just that I completely hate writing endings as they always sound forced and weird. So I'm in huge awe of him smile as a writer

Sorry, but i kinda agree with Arianllyn. I couldn't manage it, I think. It was an original ending, yes, but it sure made me cry. I don't see why Lyra had to give up so much for everyone else. i think she gave up enough and according to me a short life with your love is much better than an eternety without him. Ok ok, I admit she could fall in love with somebody else too, but I think they were the movement of a completely new and different kind of love and relationship, so I can't really imagine her finding somebody else like Will so easily, ...or at all! She's quite an extravagant little girl, no? 3nodding
Either way, I'm not her, so i can't choose for her. I liked the ending, I liked their last dialogue, but it's not what I'd do. But I admit, that ending sure leaves space for more, because there is still a republic to build, and who knows, maybe one day they will meet there somewhere, and be togather again^^ ...*optimist*

Lol, you should take that stuff again wink It's an interesting topic. I'm sure no one would actually want to be in that situation and one wonders why the sacrifice was necessary in literary terms.

The ending was a killer, but I wouldn't change it. Every time that I read HDM I always end up crying my eyes out a day ahead of time in anticipation and a 3 days after. Can't help it. I ALWAYS try and brainstorm a way that they could have stayed together, or at least seen eachother again, and I can't find anything that would work for them and the greater good of everyone else in all of the worlds. I really wish that they could see eachother just one more time though... -sappy music- But I know in my heart -violins- that they will meet again in the world of the dead... -piano-
