Tzu Tse Jungle

This is the jungle area surrounding the main city. It is thick, dark at ground level and difficult to navigate. Its climate is energy-sapping, which is not good when trying to deal with the many dangerous creatures living here. It is easier to get around using the walkways strung between the treetops (which lead to the higher structures of the city) but these are not particularly safe either. Still, take advantage of the water while you're here!

She left the city on the ground rather than via one of the large buildings. The walkways were generally deemed to be safer. However she wouldn't necessarily be able to find what she wanted up above. True she would find the seeds of trees and some plants grow clinging to teh branches of trees, or lodges in niches where dirt has built up. Still she wanted to explore the lower levels. She felt more at home in this dark, damp, humid environment. It was more like the earth level she loved. she had no clue how she was going to cope in the desert.

She had purchased a machete from one of the stores in Aronath city. It would come in useful for clearing away plants should she need to. Once in the jungle she realised that it really was very dark. Not only that but difficult to fight her way through, every where vines tangled with roots and other plants. The machete became useful more quickly than she had anticipated. She looked carefully at every plant she passed. She really ought to have made a note of what she wanted. On the other hand no one had yet catalogued Geopolis's flora, or indeed its fauna, so who knew how many unkown species grew here.

Hacking away at a particularly tough bit of jungle she paused to wipe the perspiration from her brow. It was a little hotter here than she was really used to, and there were flying critters everywhere. She hoped they didn't bite. But no of course they would. so long as she didn't catch some tropical disease she didn't know how to cure, it was very unlikely anyone would think to look for her out here if she collapsed. She laughed at herself for having such gloomy thoughts.

Suddenly she spotted something familiar. A delicate winding vine with bright purple flowers. Of course she had forgotten that this grew here. A plant with a huge number of uses. what was the damn thing called? Never mind, hopefully it would be fruiting but it was hard to tell in this climate. She gazed at the plant being careful not to touch it.

Was that?... Yes... a fruit! Just about ripe. All she needed to do was dry it out and she would have all the seeds she needed. Well that was a good start.

Overhead the sky began to darken as night fell across geopolis.

Her hand roamed into her satchel searching for a glove but she kept her eyes trained upon the delicate fruit. Almost afraid that if she looked away it would vanish. Eventually she found the glove and reached up to pluck the fruit. It's skin was a blazing orange red and slightly soft to the touch. taking it carefully she lovingly wrapped it in a strip of cloth before placing it in her bag. At least the journey would not be entirely wasted.

Looking up for the first time she realised just how dark it had grown.

I ought to be setting up camp

above her the mighty trees loomed forbiddingly. Their leaves blocking out pretty much all light. Soon it would be too dark to see at all. She had allowed herself to become distracted and soon she would be in serious trouble. She needed a fire and quickly, but she could barely see to gather wood. At least she had a flint and tinder, no messing about with sticks for her.

Having gathered just about enough wood she was able to light a small fire in a clearing. Well it could be called a clearing in the same sort of way you could call a paper aeroplane a boeing 747. It was more of a space that wasn't a tree. But she hacked some vines away with her pen knife (Why did I not think of bringing a machete? Seriously?). She even had a couple of sheets to fashion into hammock and something to keep the rain off. Afterall she was not entirely unprepared for the terrain.

As the darkness seemed to thicken about her she lay in her makeshift hammock. The jungle was alive with odd noises at night. Some of them even rather alarming. like the low growling that seemed to be getting closer. She sat up (in as far as that is possible in a hammock without making a damn fool of yourself) and looked around. She could just about make out the outline of the trees above her. All else was dark.

She realised she knew nothing of what lived in the light Jungle.

There was a rustling in the undergrowth to one side of what she laughingly thought of as her camp. It was impossible to make anything out in the choking darkness. She had been surprised just how efficiently the trees blocked out all light. She could only be a few miles from the main city surely.

Of course she should never have let the fire go out. She was showing herself up as the suburbanite she was. She knew nothing of jungle. Give her a good swamp and she would be all right. Somehow the swamps seemed much more friendly. The various venemous snakes, alligators and tentacled things were familiar and welcoming. Whereas here every noise made her jump.

She sat very still, ears pricked, listening and trying desperately to see. Her eyes might be a little better attuned to darkness than those of humans but there really was no light here. Suddenly the rustling stopped.

With a hideous snarl a dark shape leaped out of the bushes hurtling straightowards her.

Whatever it was hit the hammock at high speed, squealing and getting all tangled in the sheets. It struggled for a few minutes and then gave up, calling out in a high-pitched, nasal, rather pathetic whine.
The jungle cat chasing it took this as a sign that something else had caught it (which in a sense it had). It was cautious by nature and wasn't about to chance this other thing being bigger and nastier than it was. It slunk off into the night with a flick of its tail, and didn't intend to come back for at least a day or two.

((lol))

Attemps to unwrap herself from the hammock ended in both her and the mysterious creature landing in a heap on the jungle floor. Fortunately the mat of roots and decaying leaves made it a soft landing. She gazed at the creature now sitting on her legs looking pitifully bemused. What on Geopolis was it? Her knowledge of plants was extensive but it seemed her knowledge of animals was not. It didn't help that she could still barely see.

She grabbed hold of the creature, hoping it wouldn't bite. She had decided to secure it somewhere until morning came and she could get a better look at it.

The piglet struggled again, but eventually calmed down. After all, if it hadn't been hurt yet, it probably wouldn't be. After a little while, it fell asleep. Its strange mothlike antennae quivered with every snore. It'd be trouble to wake in the morning.

((If you want a description, it looks like a baby boar with long furry antennae and pretty much the same colouring as a tree sloth. biggrin ))

((oh gods I've forgotten my characters name! How did I manage that?)

She finally woke as light began to filter back into the dense jungle. A pleasant green light, not too bright. Although, as this was the light level, still considerably brighter than anything she normally experienced back home. She yawned and rubbed her eyes considering it was lucky that her skin was somewhat scaly as it probably made it less attractive to bloodsucking pests. She scratched absently at a scale. Then again maybe not.

The odd snoring finally caught her attention and she was reminded of the events of the night before. What was it she had caught? I turned out to be a rather cute looking piglet. It was still fast asleep, it's antennae quivered as it snored. It was just as well that it was quite small otherwise the sound would have been dreadful.

She stroked its head gingerly wondering how best to wake it up. She couldn't see any fangs, stings, claws or mechanisms which might cause it to explode so she had deemed it failry harmless. The question now was should she release it or keep hold of it? As a native of these parts it might be able to warn her of danger or uncover useful plants. The humans told myths of a creature like this (only bizarrely lacking antennae) which was sometimes used to hunt for a rare type of fungus. Perhaps it could be trained.

They proceeded through the jungle together. The creature seemed perfectly content to stay with her. In fact he seemed quite a friendly fellow, scampering a few feet ahead of her then turning back to watch her. His furry antennae twitched this way and that as they walked.

She had for the moment forgotten what other plants she needed on this level. The jungle had been more than she had really been prepared for. she desperately needed a guide. She certainly was not ready to brave the desert. Perhaps she would be better off returning to town and trying some other more manageable level to start off with. Besides if she rememebred correctly it would soon be the winter festival. She had actually hoped to have made it through both the light and air levels by now but she had just been going too slowly. Never mind, she would head down to the water level to enjoy the festivities and return better prepared.

She wrapped a scarf about the piglets neck and attached it to a piece of vine she hacked away from a tree. It made a serviceable leash, not especially stylish but the pig probably didn't much care. She wondered how it would react to being taken to a city.

The journey back wasn't too bad as she simply followed her own trail of crushed foliage and broken twigs. However it was hardly the most direct route as it seemed she had meandered around a lot. It was nightfall by the time she reached the city walls, the gaurds nearly woldn't let her in.
