The idea for this came to me a while back, while I was thinking... If you had a video store, what movies would be essential for you to say that you have a good horror section? I've came up with shorter lists, and I've even asked friends for opinions.
I've been working on this list off and on for a couple days, and finally finished it a few minutes ago. While I was putting it together, I set a couple rules for myself.
#1 Only movies I have seen, all the way through, at least once.
#2 No sequels, even though there are some sequels that I find superior to the original.
If there's a movie that's not on my list that you can't believe is not there, it's mostly because I haven't seen it, or haven't seen it all the way. Or i just didn't like it that much.
Enjoy the list, let me know what you think, if you think a movie I included sucks, let me know. I spent a lot of time on this and feedback is appreciated.
I also posted a list of horror movies by decade in the horror PHD thread. (But those include things I haven't seen but are thought of as great movies.)
List in next post.

If I had a video store, it would be more profitable and better for business if I carry the fifty most popular movies people want to pay money to see--not the ones I personally believe are great.

Tygrr This list just stemmed from that idea. I felt like doing it, and I did it. But wouldn't the general population want to see some sequels? Many of this generation's horror fans do talk about The Devil's Rejects a lot. And it seems silly from both a business and a rational standpoint to allow your consumers to see, for example, The Evil Dead and then deny them the chance to come back and rent or purchase The Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness.

And it seems silly from both a business and a rational standpoint to allow your consumers to see, for example, The Evil Dead and then deny them the chance to come back and rent or purchase The Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness. If I actually ran a video store, I'd never do something like that, in my opinion Evil Dead 2 was better. And there are sequels of other movies that I liked better than the original. And I would have way more than 50 horror movies.
I put in the no sequels rule for myself before I started the list to give myself a bit of a challenge. I could easily make a list if I included sequels.
The Friday the 13 series is 10 movies by itself, 11 if you count Freddy v.s. Jason. And A Nightmare On Elm Street has 7 (8 if you count F v.s. J as mentioned above) so there's 18 movies right there.
Add in the Evil Dead trilogy and that makes 21 so far. There's 5 Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies in all, that brings us up to 26. Hey how could I have a horror section and not include Halloween? 8 more for our list, and we're at 34 now.
Let's not forget Night of the Living Dead, it's sequels and remakes make our total 40. Phantasm was good, and I wouldn't want to leave that out, that series went 4 movies, up to 44 now.
I could include the Alien series, (although I never watched them, no interest) and there's 4 of them, 5 including Alien v.s Predator. So we're up to 49. Well I'd have to include Predator giving us 50. Hey what about Pedator 2? Oops I'm out of room.
Now I typed that up in a fraction of the time I spent coming up with an Essential 50. And like I said before, if I did have a video store, it would have way more than 50.
This is just me doing a list, just for the heck of it.

The Sun Prince My opinion on your choices. Do not take to heart; it's just my opinion. Hey you're entitled, I'm glad you looked at the list and gave feedback on them all.
For the choices you didn't like, would you want to substitute another movie? I'd just like to see what you'd pick.

Hmm...
Well, let's see...
I'd put Carrie in there. Also An American Werewolf in London. Suspiria. The Birds. Gigli, oh wait, wrong kind of horror. xd Hmm..I'm drawing a blank right now. Maybe I'll think of others later.

After all, who needs Hitchcock's ode to the "ficticious stories of when good animals go bad" genre when we have Psycho? On the other hand, I've just noticed that Shaun of the Dead is strangely abscent from the list. The film is only two years old, and to not include it in any sort of canon is already considered sacrilegious in most circles.

I think Gigli would have to be locked up int he back room somewhere, and people would have to sign a release form first. lol
I've never seen Suspiria, but I believe it made my decade by decade list in the Horror PHD thread. The Birds is another Hitchcock classic. I was going to put American Werewolf in, why didn't I? *sigh* Oh well.
Carrie, now if there's a horror movie I'd want to see remade, I just don't like Sissy Spacek. rolleyes She just annoys me.

I think it's a really good list because it spans the spectrum of horror movies pretty well. Some of the movies I don't like and some of the movies "are not horror movies" to some people.
But you can't please everyone all the time and I don't think there's anyone who likes horror movies who wouldn't like a least a few on that list.
I was very happy to see The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Trilogy of Terror, The Serpent and the Rainbow, and Tales From the Hood.
I am not a big fan of The Blair Witch Project*, but at the time it was a very important film in the horror industry and it should be included. *I laughed my a** off when the guy said he threw the map in the river. Hee-hee-hee... rofl rofl rofl

Hee-hee-hee... rofl rofl rofl My opinion on Blair Witch is this. When it was still thought of as a true story, it scared the crap out of everyone. But when it finally got out that it was just a movie, nobody wanted to admit that they got duped and got scared.
It was a good original story, and innovative film making. With any movie, you have to just have to sit back and let yourself be entertained.
