The Bible does not tell us when Jesus was born. However, it does give us sound reason to conclude that his birth did not take place in December.

Consider the weather conditions at that time of the year in Bethlem, where Jesus was born. The jewish month of Chislev (corresponding to November/December) was a month with cold and rainy weather.

The month after that was Tebeth (December/January)> It saw the lowest temperatures of the year, with occasional snows in the highlands.
The Bible writer Ezra shows that Chislev was indeed a month known for cold and rainy weather. After stating that a crowd gathered aroung in JErusalm.

EZRA reports that the people were very cold because it was raining at the time. Most of the people also commented that it was too cold to stay outside. No wonder shepherds living in that part of the world made sure that they and their flocks were no longer out of doors at night when December came.

When, Jesus was born however the shepherds were in the fields tending their flocks. Like states that the shepherds were "living our of doors and keeping watches in the night over their flocks." (luke 2:8-12)
Notice that the shepherds were actualy living out of doors, not just strolling outside during the day. They had their flocks in the field at night.

Does that description of outdoor living fir the chilly and rainy weather conditions of BEthlehem in DEcember? No, it does not!!
So the circumstances surrounding Jesus' birth indicate that he was not born in DEcember.

Discuss: what do you think about it?
DO you agree? Why do or dont you agree?

Like you said, nobody knows when Jesus was born. Christmas isn't what most people think it is. Irving told me quite a lot about this one time while chatting. Christmas was a pagan holiday that the Catholic church thought looked fun (I think that's how it went down, Irving Mason knows more than i do in that regard), so, to bring more people to Cotholism (I think I'm spelling that right) the pope made it a Christian Holiday celebrating Christ's birth.
All it is is a celebration. Who knows when Jesus was born.

Christmas is a day that is OBSERVED for the celebration of Jesus' birthday, not the observation of the actual date.

The actual date is irrelevant. Personally, I don't think Jesus was interested in birthdays, especially not his own. I don't really think He is impressed with the concept of Christmas at all. Especially as it is now. It is as Godless and comercialized as ever. Christmas, even to most "Christians" has stopped being about Christ, and more about finding themselves depressed broke down and in debt. God wants us to be good stuards of what he has put in our care.

Anyhow, the origin of Christmas was actually a Pagan ritual day where they would worship the Sun and give gifts in honor of it. Of course the religious people of the time found that some of the people who were supposed to be Christians got caught up in the pagan festivities (it musta been fun) religious leaders decided to make the Pagan Sun worship into the day where Christians would worship the Son (of God) Jesus.

I'm all about celebrating Jesus. But we all know how Chirstmas is today. I find it quite annoying. So, I don't need a day to tell me to be happy Jesus was born or to spend time with my family.

Wow. That was a rant, wasn't it. I guess you all know how un-fond I am of calender days dictating society.

I love Christmas. It's a time to hang with fam fam and be happy spending time together. I don't really view it as a religious day. It's just good fun I think.

Don't get me wrong, hanging out with fam fam should never, EVER be something you do once a year. I love hanging with my family every chance I get (which is atleast a few days a month) Christmas is a day I know for a fact where all of my family will be at home, playing games and doing other family activities.

Which is why I wish we wouldn't call it Christmas if it's just a get together.

May as well call it Capitalistmas

Why would that matter? It's just a name, really. Kinda like the Da Vinici Code, this holiday doesn't really have anything to do with the religion, even if people say it does.

so what is the use of doing christmas if it is pagan? And everyone says that is the day Jesus was born. WHy do they celebrate then?
Reseach has been done and it says JEsus was born around the month of October because its summer and the shepards are normally in the fields.

All it is is a celebration. That's all. Though, nowadays like Poem said, it's not really about religion. To me it's about family time.

Well, Christmas was really celebrated by many cultures... The general time anyway, not the specific holliday. Even the Greeks had their own Christmas which is most like our's today. In their Christmas, the men sodomized each other, gave presents, drank, and often beat their women. A lot fo hollidays that weren't actually Christian in origin managed to work their way into the Christian faith... Or to at least managed to have Christians start celebrating them in a non-blasphemous way.

Take Samhain for example, it's origins were a sort of festival the Celts had, then the Irish turned it into a day of pranks, then look how it is now. Christians even have their own tales about the origin of the jack-o-lantern because they've embedded the bit of foreign culture into their ways so much.

EDIT: Note that I think Poem's right in that Christians actually adopted Christmas from the festival where the Sun was worshipped... I'm just stating that many cultures had it, and the many different ways of celebrating it probably took part in shaping what it is now.

I think it's sad, and wrong to use the name of Christ as an reason to do a said something and do something completely opposite. I think if Christians set aside a day to honor Chirst's birth it should stick to that and not turn into a hallmark holiday. Look at all of the hoidays we observe.

Easter is supposed to be the celebration of the ressurection of Christ. What do the moneymongers do with it? Turn it into a candy consuming festival where six foot rabbits lay chicken eggs with magical candy inside. Instead of observing and worshiping we all go chasing after badling men in pink bunny suits. How is God pleased with that? How is it even a Christian holiday? How is it a holiday (holy day) at all?

I could go on, but I think I should save some of this angst for a later time. 3nodding

*Glomps*

I hope you didn't take my ranting as directed towards you, dear. exclaim

They were general statements. It's not your fault the way holidays have turned out. sweatdrop

General Annoucement:
Please continue to enjoy your famfam on these days. Just don't get lost in the traditionalism of it all.
