Does anyone here love history? I LOVE it. It's my best subject in school. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to have a history discussion with somebody. Go ahead and bring anything up related to history in this thread.
I've got no subjects right now, but I will think of something.

XP I can get into detail about certain parts of history, but know very little on the broad subject... Most of my own knowledge about it seems to revolve around Vlad Tepes and the early Crusades. (Specifically, the man who caused what some hsitorians call the first Holocaust, Count Emich of Leiningen.)

Oowww! We can talk about Vlad the Impaler and the Crusades if you want!
First question, do you think that Vlad the Impaler was a good man who only wanted to keep the crime rate down (through horrible impaling for those that committed a crime...or just for the fun of it), or a sadist who needed an excuse to murder people?

Eh... A little of category A, and a little of category B. After some time under Vlad's rule Romania had pactically no crime what so ever, you could literally leave a challice of gold that was encrysted with jewels on the streets for months and nobody would even attempt to take it. (Supposedly, Vlad did that for over a year near a well. Anybody was allowed to use it, but not to steal it.) And one must keep in mind that those who told most of the tales about him were his enemies, who tried to make him out to be even more brutal and heartless than he really was. Not to say he wasn't actually brutal.

Yeah, I remember the story of when a person left his money outside for the night and his money was stolen. He told the law inforcement about it and soon Vlad caught the dude who stole the money. When the money was returned to the man, Vlad added an extra coin to the money pile. Luckily for the man, the man told Vlad about the extra coin. If he hadn't told Vlad about the extra coin, the man would have been impaled. That shows how much Vlad wanted his laws obeyed.
Do you think he did any good for Wallachia?

And I'm getting booted, but will be back in a few hours to give a more detailed post about my little opinions on Vlad and Wallachia when I get back. Sorry for taking so long...

Hope nobody minds me posting this on my mule account... Anyhow, I think Vlad himself was good for Wallachia as a nation, but to it's populous? That's another question. It's a bit debatable really... On one hand, he made it an incredibly safe place with almost no theft what so ever. On the other, petty theft and accidental offenses really don't deserve a giant spike going up your sphincter (sp?) and out your mouth. I suppose in the end my opinion is quite mixed and uncertain on him.

Let's not forget his just total hatred for cripples and such. Remember what he did to those cripples that he invited to that party? I know that they said they enjoyed the charity thy received, but that was just sick and cruel and not at all a good thing to do.

Indeed. But it wasn;t just cripples, it was also a bunch of moochers. You've got to wonder if the moochers being mixed in could have helped screw some of the cripples. @_@

Maybe. Though, no matter what, they didn't deserve to be burnt to death by old Dracula.
How did he die again? Didn't the Turks cut off his head?

I know old Vlad, but what about the party and cripples?? Tell, tell!! Good 'ol James may have to correct some of this since I can't remember specifics, but the geist of it is that he at one point invited all those who couldn't work, such as cripples and those who just claimed they couldn't work, and threw them a grand party. They were given a great feast and the finest drnks, and generally given what was probably the best time of their lives. Near the end he made a toast and asked if they all would just rather sit back and let society give them their needs, not having to contribute anything to the country. When he got a positive reply, presumably in cheer form, he left and ordered for the building to be nailed shut and burnt to the ground with them all inside. And nobody knows for sure how Vlad died. There are many different versions ranging from disappearing in battle or having the Turks defeat him, to having his own soldiers betray him. I think there's even one version where his brother and priest conspired against him.

I'm pretty sure that's what went down. Vlad had a tendency to kill anyone who did anything wrong. He came to a bad end i'm sure.
