NEWS
Sega has announced a sequel to PSU: http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2007/1085.html

The sequel will also star Ethan Waber. It will feature new stages, weapons and enemies. It's going to be available in Japan later this year.

Atleast it's a Phantasy Star game. Even if it's not what I was hoping...
I do want to get PSU. But I had to make sure that I got Disgaea 2 and the Sega collection. I'd get PSU faster if it was a traditional PS game. But at this time I want Ar Tonelico. heart

I apologise if this is a repeat thread. But I didn't see any others.

On GameFAQs there's a board for it. The game is yet to be released.
There's not alot of info floating around on it either. And there's some dispute over whether or not there will be online play (I don't really care about that though).

It doesn't take place in Algo but rather another system called Graal. There are several different planets and races (including numans) but I don't know if these people came from Algo at some point or landed on a ship that escaped from Palm or what. There's no info on that or an Algo connection that I know of.
Also it seems to be made by Sega directly and not Sonic Team.

Some recent news from Gamespot

The GameFAQs board is here

And here's the official site. http://phantasystaruniverse.com/

It's in japanese though. but apparently the numan girl is named Karen Ella (or Era). The human boy may be named Ethan but someone on the board says the guy translated it wrong and it's not Ethan. So I don't know.

Here's a translation of the story and character bios.

Now it says that Karen can't use techs. I wonder why... Maybe it's some special part of the story why she can't?

If you click screenshot on the official site you'll see three in game screens. The first is a battle. It looks pretty cool and chaotic.

The second is Karen with an android. Notice that the android is more like the PSO ones instead of looking like Wren, Demi and Mieu. I I'm still kinda hoping there will be a Wren type in there somewhere... sweatdrop

The third screen shows Karen, Ethan , and some other dude inside some building. Of course I have no clue where it is. but it looks cool. ^^

PSU has been confirmed for PS2 and PC. So far no word on Gamecube... sweatdrop
I have both a Gamecube and PS2 so I don't have to be worried if it comes to the states. But other people seem to be upset over this. However no one really knows yet if it won't come to Gamecube too.

Also, I'd like to apologise for some of the rampant stupidity on that particular GameFAQs board. Alot of these people seemed to have only played PSO.
And some of them don't really know anything about PS at all. Back when the board was first introduced there was a topic there about Karen and the guy was calling her an elf! gonk
There was also someone who thought she was Nei!!! xd

awesome!!

http://www.the-magicbox.com/gaming.htm
(scroll down. it's text news. no new pics yet).

it sounds like a mini-MMORPG that can also be played offline!!!

this is great!!!!! SINCE 64 players can be supported at once per server, that means character creation is definitely in!!!!!! ^___^
I'm not seeing what he was talking about, but since he posted this 3 days ago and that specific page updates the info he's refering to is probably not there anymore, or is just relocated.
If we all had the money and system for it might be rather fun to play with members of the guild.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

The new EGM is out to subscribers today -- a friend of mine got an early copy (I guess they're showing up in mailboxes as of today), and offered up a couple of tidbits from the PSU feature. I haven't seen the issue yet myself, so please don't press me for details. Here's what he said:

- Independent Offline and Online modes confirmed

- Offline is a full-on 40-hour single-player RPG -- I guess this is where the "Is it Phantasy Star V?" bit came from in the E3 trailer last year

- Online is basically a true sequel to PSO, but apparently it's NOT an MMORPG. EGM says there'll be more party members than PSO, but they don't clarify how many

- Character creation system is apparently very nice (that's where the "breasts" comment came from, I guess)

- Class system is very different from PSO's, more open-ended

- They feature two pages on offline, two pages on online, and an interview with Yuji Naka. Lots of new screens, too

Subscribers are getting their issues now (he got his today), so I suppose more info will be popping up soon.

Here's a bit more information.

Ah I see. I keep getting conflicting info on GameFAQs... sweatdrop

I can't wait for it though. looks good. I hope it comes to the states.

Breasts? xd
I was looking at a side view of my PSO character today. I wish I had made the proportion different. I think they are too big... I left it at default. sweatdrop

Really? those bastards! gonk

Well as long as it can be played offline that's good enough for me. Although I wish gammes would let you pay via money order. I don't understand why. It's secure... sweatdrop

Lord Khyron, at PS Cave
Quote:
Offline - single player

Here's some specific tidbits for offline, as requested by someone in my EGM rumors thread:

Offline - 40-hour quest. It's a linear story, but you can explore the world as you please. It has everything you'd expect from an actual RPG -- huge towns, more than 20 dungeons, more than 15 bosses. You can have up to three members in your party, and while you don't directly control them, you can assign them commands. The single-player mode will have cutscenes, dialogue, an in-depth story, character development, etc., etc. Some people will have to join you for missions, but when you just want to explore and build levels, you can apparently select anyone to go with you. By the end of the game, you'll end up exploring three planets. It starts on the hume world, Parum, which gets attacked by weird aliens. You visit Neudaiz, a water world of "newman people," and Motwob, the planet of the beast people - desert planet. THe main character's name is Ethan Waber. He decides to fight because his sister gets attacked. Gameplay remains relatively similar to PSO, but there will be more puzzles and stuff in dungeons -- and not just flipping switches.

Okay, online:

No longer jobs, just character races. Each of the four races has its own strengths, but you can develop them as you see fit. For example, casts are the best with guns, but that doesn't mean you can't build up their other characteristics and make them good magicians. Character customization is apparently incredibly improved. You can change colors of lips, eyebrows, eyes, hair, clothes, shoes, you can mold faces and bodies, create large or small breasts, make them firm or jiggly. That's an example the lead artist gives. HDD is NOT supported, because Sony pulled the support. It looks substantially better on the PC, and EGM recommends that version. Voice chat, regardless, has not been confirmed, for either platform.

Combat remains relatively similar to PSO, but there are differences, There are six-hit combo strings now, but you insert custom technique attacks into the combos to change them up. Strafing has been adding, and button-timing is supposed to be quick, for combat. Like John said, the number of party members is much higher, but Sega hasn't revealed how many it will be yet. Characters can dual wield different weapons now, so a gunner can have a short range gun and a long-range one equipped at the same time. Mags are gone, robot partners are in. Downloadable content will be more frequent and more substantial.

And PSO Blue Burst is coming this Summer, the mag says it's "free," but you just have to pay the $13 Hunter's Fee.

One last thing I forgot, vehicles are included.

If the link worked properly, that's a poor English Translation of Sega's short news brief on PSU. Some things are definately off though since Babelfish isn't 100% accurate. sweatdrop

RPGamer is reporting more on the story. Let me quote here:
RPGamer.com
The official website of Sega's upcoming Phantasy Star Universe recently revealed some story details. The game is set in the Ragol solar system, which has three inhabitable planets. Each planet has its own distinct race and culture. Parum is the planet of the humans, Neudaiz is where Numans reside, and Motwob is the desert home of animal-like people. War is a common character in the history of the three planets, but it has been 100 years since the end of the last battle. The three planets' respective governments have since come together and signed a peace treaty, and created an Allied Army designed to prevent any more interplanetary wars.

The game's beginning puts players in the middle of the Centennial Celebration of the peace treaty's signing. A 17-year-old named Ethan and his younger sister Rumia are enjoying the festivities on the Guardian Colony when a huge swarm of meteors engulfs the area. The meteors destroy much of the Allied Army's space fleet, and most of the planet's surface is reduced to burning rubble. Monsters soon ooze forth from the meteorites, which certainly suggests that they are not normal space rocks. Later dubbed "SEED," the swarm of meteors was not a random chunk of bad luck for Ragol. Instead, they were intentionally sent by an unknown enemy set on obliterating all life in Ragol. Surrounded by chaos on Guardian Colony, Ethan borrows the gear of a downed army officer to save his sister, who's buried somewhere in the rubble. He does not find her....

These events lead Ethan to join the Allied Army's police force, "Guardian," where he trains under Karen Era. Karen is also 17, but a "numan," rather than a human like Ethan. Despite her youth, she already has three years of experience being a Guardian. She got into this business after losing her mother, and tries very hard to be strong leader, hoping to compensate for her lack of technical know-how.

Gamefront has also published some details regarding the gameplay. The game will feature an offline, plot-driven game estimated to be over 40 hours long. While the story may be linear, players will have plenty of free time to investigate the world. In offline battle, players will control the main character, while giving general instructions to the others.

The online play will be very different from that of Phantasy Star Online. First off, robotic assistants have replaced the "mags" which assisted players in previous games. Also making a first appearance are vehicles; no specific types have been unveiled, though. Much customization of one's online avatar will be possible, as well. One can now edit the lip color, eye color, and a few other features previously unchangeable. Attack combos may contain up to six sttacks, including special techniques. Attacking will be possible while using two weapons. It is not known whether or not the number of combo hits goes up when using two weapons.

There are still no exact release dates set for Phantasy Star Universe, but Japanese gamers can expect it some time next winter. No official localization plans have been announced for anywhere else.

Also got some other aspects in there.

I don't. I chose Disgaea 2 instead for fear that like the first game it would disappear. sweatdrop

My friend does though. His username is most likely Jifremok.

Well that was rather quick work on getting to a sequel. Let's hope for less pointless references this time around, though the "The game's opening sequence shows Ethan facing off against a towering female character." thing makes me think they'll still beat the older games with an ugly stick and stuff it in the game. O.o

I just got PSU. There's a part when Ethan is talking about missions in general (I think it's to Pete in ch. 3) and he mentions finding missing pets. rofl

Remember the fat mutt in Phantasy Star 4? I loved that quest. Even though it got a little frustrating to chase him down, the sprite was so cute. But the kid sure was a brat. No wonder he ran away.
