It is always interesting to compare great works to each other and since many Gaia users are familiar with anime I hope they will have seen Vision of Escaflowne. Due to the nature of the debate there will be spoilers so please don't read on if you don't want to know what happens!
Escaflowne is about Hitomi, a girl from Earth. She seems ordinary at first, but we quickly find out that she can read Tarot cards and dowse. Seemingly suddenly and for no reason she is transported to Gaia, a whole different planet. Only later do we find out that her grandfather had been there before and left his granddaughter this legacy. On Gaia she quickly meets up with Van, the young Prince of a kingdom in trouble and surrounded by war. There are many political intrigues and problems, but the overarching enemy seems to be Sir Newton who believes he can shape destiny to his own wills and create a different future for everyone through his various machines. There is magic, love, battle and death. It is truly an epic anime and it seems to share some definite similarities.
What is your opinion about this comparison? Do you think they are similar or not? Which one do you prefer? Lyra is portrayed as younger than Will, yet her relationship progresses much more quickly and perhaps deeply than the ones Hitomi establishes. Despite her various blunders, is Lyra more mature than Hitomi or is she just swayed by different circumstances? How do these epics benefit by describing the travels of young girls with little combat powers as opposed to focusing on men learning to be better warriors? What is the meaning of the special powers that the two girls wield, are they necessary so they are a little bit more than damsels in distress? Could you compare Milerna to Mrs. Coulter?
After discussion has died down, I will post the debate topic with our opinions in the anime discussion forum to see what the general public thinks as well.

Hmm, that is an amazingly striking comparison, actually. I've never even considered it, in fact, and I am a fan of Escaflowne and HDM. I must say, your observations make perfect sense. Both HDM and Escaflowne follow a similair story arc and conclusion. And, within their respective mediums, are both immensely unique. So, yes, I do think they are similair.

Well, we didn't get too much discussion here. I'll create a topic in the anime forum (and I'll post the link here) to see what the general public thinks wink

I'm sorry to say but there isn't much interest about this in the general public either. Maybe it's too unique a combination!

I wouldn't have thought of this comparison on my own...its really amazing how similar they are. I think that HDM should also be adapted to an anime (in addition to the upcoming movie). They could go into so much more detail without having to offend people, and both HDM fans, as well as anime fans, would be happy heart xd 3nodding

ah, my two loves: HDM and Vision of Escaflowne. However, I don't believe they're very similar, except the fact they are both completly awesome heart
