I originally posted the following on the lttd forums:
One of my absolute most favorite aspects to Satanic philosophy is the reservation of love for those who are worthy of such a sentiment. You all know the philosophy; Altruistic love is foolish, not to mention almost always ingenuine. Shoveling out your love to people you hardly know is a waste of a perfectly good emotion that could be put to good use for your friends and loved-ones. Followers of the RHP would (try to) have you believe that they still give sufficient amounts of love to those who are close to them at the same time as dumping it all over ingrates, but what good is it to give Joe-Shmoe an emotion that would retain much more value when spent on your spouse, your child, your best friend, etcetera alone?
I think most of us here can agree that it is without a doubt, not only impossible to "love" a stranger, but it is a waste to delude oneself into thinking that one can and does.
Hate is just as precious a sentiment, though considerably less appreciated by the recipient of such. Like love is reserved for those who truly deserve one's love, I believe that hate is reserved for those who also truly deserve it. Hate is a powerful emotion, not unlike love. Hate is not something that I believe should be dulled and cheapened on behalf of strangers and those one need not subject oneself to. There is quality to hate, and when indiscriminately dealt out, it loses that quality.
If one claims to hate everything that they do not at least moderately like, what effect will their truest hate have when someone who happens to truly deserve it crosses their path? Will it even phase the recipient of this hate to receive something that their enemy is projecting without second thought on a daily basis? Likely not.
"By learning to release your hatred towards those who deserve it, you cleanse yourself of these malignant emotions and need not take your pent-up hatred out on your loved ones."
Hail Satan! Hail Hate! Hail Love!

I suppose the only probelm is when people use "Hate" as an excuse for "fear" or "ignorance" and twist it. Just like with twisting love, twisting hate makes it in-excusable - I think anyway. Beating someone to death because you don't understand them, and then calling it hate is a chickenshit mis-use of the emotion itself.
Which just leads back to your statement of it being as precious as love. People shouldn't throw hate around like it's nothing, because once you take the substance of something away it's easier to turn it into what it isn't.
And I hope that makes sense.

It makes perfect sense. I think many people use "misanthropy" interchangeably with "anti-social," and "pessimistic," just as people use "hate" interchangeably with both "fear" and "ignorance," and, might I add, simple "distaste/dislike."

Hate, should be earned. dont hate someone unless they have made a conscious effort to truly piss you off, is what i say. however love should have slightly lessened standards, in my opinion.

Hate is good. Hate is passionate. It's just a breath away from love, and is very much the same: hate can bring anger, jealousy and sadness, as can love.

I'm with you. I love with passion, and I hate just as intensely. But I save my emotions for those that truly deserve them. I truly love all of about twenty people, and I TRULY hate one. I hate him more than I love anyone. He deserves to die. Painfully, for what he has done. I will dance on his grave someday.
As Satanists, we can't bother to waste time on people who don't deserve it. Our time is too precious to be wasted on ingrates. Love those who love you, and become apathetic to those who don't. They don't matter. If they don't love you, they're a waste of a human and shouldn't even be taken into consideration.
